A LONG TIME AGO, ON A WORKBENCH FAR, FAR AWAY... Oh wait. Its NOW. And that workbench isnt too far away. From my point of view at least. Now that the Heinkel "Salamander" and the Tau "Devilfish" are complete, its time for another wingy build. Of course I like SciFi a lot (as most of you know ), so its no wonder that I got the new X-Wing from Episode VII here. The kit itself is an "Easy kit". I plan the following: -a complete repaint -maybe a reworked cockpit (original pictures are rare these days, if you have some, please let me know - would be great.) -and a special setting. Some words about the special setting: Id like to keep it simple, but different. I found a picture on the web thats just perfect: A small, but powerful scenery and a bit off the movie-based sceneries probably most modelers will do (what doesnt mean at all that this is a bad thing ). The kit is in 1/50 scale and so I had to look for smaller figures than my 1/48 figures in the stash. First idea were some Hasegawa NAVY ground crew figures, but theyre too big. Who is famous for too small figures in that scale? Right - TAMIYA always does. Found two suitable ones and rebuild them in civilian, based on two soldiers from the "US infantry at rest" set (No. 32552). Not sure about the blue scheme, some early scribbles show other colors too: Stay tuned...

Neat! I really wish that Revell had at least attempted to make their new kits in some of the standard scales. Hopefully Bandai will take care of that.

Ready, set... GO! Lucas productions go in the first round. I started with the cockpit of course. It looks quite neat from a distance. Some additional PE parts and cables helped to create more structure here and there. I was a bit disappointed about the connection spots. Theyre really tricky and the fit is VERY tight. Keep that in mind for your kids - it helps to drill the connection spots a bit wider (in this case its the middle connection of the cockpit shell).

Don't take this personally but I am not a sci-fi model fan by any stretch of the imagination. Having said that i do like your stuff TR even I don't say it . A timely post form you. I watched "The Empire Strikes Back"... yes, again. Working way through all 6 in prep for 12/18 last night. At one point as Luke was off to the Dagobah System, even I had to say to myself, "Self, you need to at least built an X-Wing fighter." I'll be watching.

WN, I really dont take that personally. And why should I? Of course tanks, real planes etc. have a bigger fan base, and SciFi will always be a special interest. In my opinion, every category has its special treatments. McQuarrie, who designed the X-Wing (this design here comes from the original sketches btw) had a lot interest in original planes for example. Kow Yokoyama, designing Maschinenkrieger kits, is mostly influenced by WW2 tanks etc. I can learn a lot from the plane and tank builders like you for example. Thats why Im here.

I think the kit (like a lot of their other Star Wars stuff) is designed for glue-free assembly. That's not exactly clip-together, as it's designed to go together once and stay that way (as I found out when I tried to test-fit one).
Cheers,
M

Thank you, Leon. When you look at the first picture, theres even more cable spaghetti. Maybe Im adding some more, theres enough lead wire left.

Hey man, landing gear rocks! Cool idea for that (and in need when you look at the kit parts). I think to build some SW stuff should be cool! But when I see the prizes for Bandai 1:72 kits I think they are crazy. The Y-Wing goes around 70 Euro here and I am NOT willing to pay such an amount of money for a small plastic kit. Think of how big Dragon stuff you can get...
Maybe scratching could be an alternativ. Or pimp the Revell stuff like you do!

Thats true Frank. You could say something like "Fun is always expensive!" or similar. Of course it is, but 70 € for 1/72 is even above Hasegawa level - I paid for example "only" 30 bucks for the Vanship when it came out. And I thought really twice. People go mad about the Bandai kits for a good reason, but Im not a superduper fan of SW and will collect all of them - I leave this to those who are far more interested. The Easy kit looked a bit too simple from my eyes, and thats totally okay for me, because thats what the plan was, including a repaint (to train some painting techniques again). BTW - I managed to paint the first two figures today. SWMBO is at work (24/7 customer service, you know...), even more time. YAY! The painting itself wasnt the problem, what makes my head ache is the re-modelling of this little fella here who will be next. Good to have some making-of-pictures! Using the cannon dent as an additional step - really clever! Test fit of the now painted front landing gear:

Yeah, landing gear IS great! And for the figures, who dares wins! And you can create such cool stuff out of mediocre kits and thats all the fun. Have seen the Falcon in 1:144 for around 90 Euros (thats what I paid years ago for the Finemolds kit in 1:72!) Had collected a cool build up of a Y-Wing on starship modeler years ago, a scratch, and it looks way better than the kit.
Maybe some blueprints of an A-Wing or B-Wing will pop up some day and I could start a scratch of one of these ships!

Blueprints, blueprints... theres a bell ringing. I know someone who has a StarWars bible, with tons of making-of pictures, blueprints etc. Big and golden book, cant remember the exact name atm, sorry. Cant promise if thats in the book too, but I can ask him, if you want.

Figs are spot on as is the helmet! I am just wondering if one can put some decals on the crews jackets back, like some cool squadron emblems or something like that...
I have fround a blueprint book at Amazon, but beyond the money range I am willing to pay. This stuff is very expensive!
