Yet another airliner for the upcoming Airliners International show this summer. When it's all said and done I should have five or six entries for the model contest. The kit: The final goal: The main external assemblies and a banana. Because as a general rule we don't eat enough bananas.

Got this in my stash, so I'll definitely be watching carefully. I'll be especially interested in how you're going to deal with the - rigging sounds wrong to me - braces (?) between the wings. Let me know if you want some ref pics - took a load in the local aviation museum.

John, what scale is the banana? If you were a 1/48 figure the banana is 25 feet long, or about the size of an adult T-Rex. I've got some personal history with the AN-2 and have actually logged about 6 hours of flight time in the early 1990's. I graduated high school the same year the Berlin Wall fell. With the idea that being able to speak Russian might lead to something employable, I majored in Russian in college. And now with a resurgent Vladimir Putin in Crimea and perhaps soon Lithuania and even Poland, perhaps those college years wont prove wasted after all. This was me on an AN-2 sometime about 1991. The Gobi desert meeting with nomadic nerf herders. Just kidding. It's a dry lake bed 30 miles north of Baker California. A Japanese perfume company hired the airplane to be featured in a TV commercial. I was along for the ride. This very blurry picture is me skydiving from an AN-2 in Kazakhstan in about 1993. No kidding there. I really did skydive in a former Soviet Republic. They give you a crash helmet for the jump. Probably a good idea given the descent rate of circular Red Army parachutes. Finally back home and back at the model. A day was needed to find a set of 1/48 seats borrowed from another kit and a rubber mold was cast. First copies appear favorable. Nine passengers seems to have been the standard load for the AN-2. I've found several versions for the passenger interior. But I think I'm going to try to duplicate this one if for no other reason than the gnarly green fabric on the seats.
Thanks for watching!

Joining the party. Looks like you had an interesting time in the early 90s John!

Nicely done on the casting John. What mold and resin material do you use? Talk more soon, Joel.

Nicely done on the casting John. What mold and resin material do you use? Talk more soon, Joel. The rubber and resin are produced by a company called Smooth-On. The rubber is a product called Mold-Max 30 and the resin is Smooth-Cast 321. I buy my materials from Reynolds Advanced Materials which has an outlet right here in Denver.

Love the choice of upholstery/interior John! Reminds me of flying in puddle-jumpers in the South Pacific...you know, the type of aircraft where they have to weigh both the passengers and their luggage before assigning seats!

Did the Colt have seatbelts? Yes. But not until the windows are painted. I'll probably get the cockpit belts in tomorrow night. I wont bother adding them to the passenger seats. It's just too hard to see anything through the small door or tiny windows. Primer done. I'm using my favorite primer which is Mr. Surfacer and Mr. Leveling Thinner mixed about 40/60 respectively. Once this has had a day to harden I'll get on with the white base and start creating the masks needed for the final scheme.
Very, very smooth. It will be more so once it's polished with a blue Brillo pad. (Not as crazy as it sounds. The blue pads will polish rather than cut through a layer of paint. Try it.) I'm not sure how much of a diorama I want to bother with on this one. There's not much engine detail to show off. I might just add a fuel truck or something. I'll have to look for 1/48 trucks to convert. Figures in 1/48 will be a new thing for me as well.

Looking great John! UM do a BZ-38 refueller if you don;t fancy converting a truck yourself.

The blue Brillo will smooth any rough spots in the primer. The camera can't see the difference. But you can clearly feel it.
It takes 5 or 6 layers to build up a good white base. But the MRP brand paint is so translucent that all the extra work allows for very subtle color gradations over each panel.
First layer of Mister Paint (MRP) and Mister Leveling Thinner to give it time to flatten out and and blend with itself before it dries.
3 or 4 layers here. (Each coat dries is just a minute or two)
Final white-but-not-quite-white. Variations in color can be seen within each area of skin.
Although the white appears insufficient here, the extra colors stripes and lettering on the lower half of the fuselage and wings will cause this pale grey to look almost pure white.

Fade looks good from here, always tricky to get that right in a 'scale' sort of way but this one looks spot on.

Thanks, Gents! Getting the final parts together now. Used the Silhouette Cameo cutter for vinyl masks and painted the markings.
If you plan it out carefully and use good quality paint (Tamiya/Mister Paint/Mister Color), you can get some extremely tight results with a CNC cut mask.
The AN-2 will need some basic rigging between the wings. Save your colored sprues and stretch them when needed to produce fibers which don't need to be painted.
Rigging, weathering and touch ups and the airplane will be finished. I'm still undecided about figures, base or context at this point. But I found this quite nice picture:

Man that looks sharp in all respects, that cutter must be a real life-saver for the special custom work you do all the time.

Man that looks sharp in all respects, that cutter must be a real life-saver for the special custom work you do all the time. It's the best hobby investment I've made since buying an Iwata airbrush. The AN-2 is complete and I've decided to go with the "full diorama". Fuel truck next. I'll blog the truck but you wont see much on the whole scene until it's done.....Maybe even done before the IPMS nationals in late July.
