After the untimely demise of the Stug build, I picked this out of my stash: Basically,it's Zvezda's 1992 vintage BT-5 with sprues added to turn it into a BT-2. The kit is now OOP, and with Hobbyboss announcing the release of a BT-2 I thought I'd better build it now, before I end up with yet another obsolete kit in my stash. Spoiler alert: a shake-and-bake it ain't! The Tom conversion suits the Zvezda kit really well in that fit of both of them is atrocious The hull roof requires the most work - numerous EPMs need removing, the turret ring had to be sanded off and the notches for turret fitment filled, as the BT-2 turret is considerably smaller than the BT-5 item and both would've been visible: Early BTs didn't have the engine grille, but only two louvres: The mountings for the front idlers had massive sink holes top and bottom: The kit axles were too short for the front pair of conversion road-wheels: The moulded on axle stubs for the next two pairs of road-wheels are too thin - fixed by wrapping some tape around them: The kit mountings for the last pair of road-wheels had to be sanded down to get them to line up. So, business as usual (for me) then The conversion gives you the choice between three armaments: twin MG, 37mm gun, and 37mm gun and MG - I'm going for the latter. But, I'm going to replace them with metal items.

Cheers Leon! More issues than kit at the moment I've also got a bridge-layer based on the same kit from Tom Modellbau... Hopefully I'll have some more pics later today, but in the meantime a little teaser of the paint-scheme I'll be aiming for (Just the paint-scheme, not the actual tank - it's got different drive-wheels and mantlet, and I'll probably leave the front mudguards off)

Masochist! Dig that scheme. One of these days I'll build a shake-and-bake, straight from the box, no PE, AM tracks or metal barrels. I also never tell a lie

You just can't resist these types of kits, admit it! Looks like you're well on your way with this one. Nice choice on the scheme, have always liked the 'tire-track' patterns, makes you wonder just how effective it really was vs. the effort required to create it.

Looks like you're taming the beast! You get and extra cookie for the persistence! Digging the scheme as well!

Not very, I think - it was only used during the winter of '41/'42 About the same time they stopped using primer - life expectancy of the tanks wasn't sufficient to warrant the effort.

Bye the bye, if you do that camo pattern you will have my vote for Chancellor..... PJ2 That one too Added more stuff: some PE, replaced the utterly horrific kit shovel with an item by Hauler with 1mm stryrene rod for a handle and a bobble at the end made from UV-hardened glue. Headlights and lower part of the driver's hatch from the spares bin. Metal 37mm barrel and DT barrel: Currently sorting out the link-and-length tracks - they're actually really nice, best part of the kit IMO. Once that's done I can add the mudguards.

Got to love that no-frills turret design! Take a look at the right-hand headlight, looks like it might be a little out of alignment (unless you intended that!). Coming along nicely Dierk!

Cheers Leon and Bill. Although not intended, I'm also not all that bothered either - looking at ref pics, their headlights rarely pointed in the same direction, or stayed whole for long

Did a bit of painting today, model's curently curing in the cellar. Just 4BO primer and a rough CM - most of it will disappear under whitewash anyway, so no need for a decent job.

I had a feeling that would be the case Dierk...it lends it some character regardless! there were also no holes for the headlights, and the ones I used from the spares bin had square mounting pins, not being in posession of a drill that makes square holes, I ended up with the square peg/round hole scenario

In today's episode I've made a start with the whitewash. First I put down a layer of 'worn effects' on the horizontal sufarces and the wheels. The vertical plates were sprayed with Ammo's 'washable white' - and I ended up with the same problem I had the last time I used Ammo paint: I ended up with a pattern that looks similar to German late-war octopus cammo - I'm not sure what causes it, but assume it's down to a conflict between the formulations of Vallejo (which I used as a base) and Ammo. It also doesn't matter if I apply the colour by AB or brush, the effect is the same. But as this paint is formulated to be washable I wasn't that bothered, as I could blend the faults out with a wet brush. On the horizontal sufaces and the wheels I sprayed Vallejo 'off white'. Once I did the chipping and blending the washable white I added some mapping using titanium white oil paint. Also painted the rubber onthe road-wheels using my usual way of a base coat of Vallejo 'dark rubber' followed by a wash of 'oiled earth': Next will be adding the 'track pattern' camo, some 4BO chipping followed by a layer of lacquer.

Thanks gents! Due to my monitor being on its last legs - new record: bought it new six months ago! I ended up not taking any progress pictures but just got on with actual modelling - quite a liberating experience. The link and length tracks, that I was initially quite impressed with turned out to be about half a link too long - so I ended up with them being either loose around the drive, or idler wheels - good thing I opted for winter camo: hid the unsighly bits with 'snow' Furthr research into the track-pattern camo scheme brought to light that crews were instructed to apply it by brush and to avoid it lookig too symmetrical. First attempt using Panzer Putty failed miserably. After respraying the affected are white, I used tape to mask off stripes, sprayed them 4BO and then hand-painted the pattern using a 10x0 brush. The exhaust took three attempts to get to a point where I was happy-ish with it...still not quite what I had in mind, but it'll do. Weathering was done using a brown wash, Thick Russian Mud with a mix of dark pigments sprinkled on while that was still damp and Vallejo Snow applied with a tooth pick and old brush. The chain on the front is from Langley Models soaked over-night in salt water. Enough blah: I've also been working on a Russian farm house from Dio Dump and some figures, as well as resurrecting the BT-7 from Tamiya that is finally getting its three colour camo after I had to strip the paint off it twice. My apologies if there's any typos - three quaters of the screen are very dark...

Now that's looking pretty cool Dierk. Anytime I see these early/pre-war designs, it reminds me just what was in the 'thousands of Soviet tanks destroyed' numbers in 1941-42 that is often talked about...and why when things like the T-34 or KV-1/2 were encountered that they came as such a shock.
