something I meant to tell you folks about getting was a book! Not just any book, but a painting guide. Titled "Modeler's Technical Guide" from Model Master paints. It's not cheap at $28, but it covers just about every aspect of painting you may encounter. The last half of the book is nothing but color charts and conversations to other brands. Yet they didn't do Vallejo and Mr. Color, and the usage of Alclad paints! Not a major issue, as there are several blank pages for adding notes inserted. One really nice thing about the charts is they do one in RLM, Federal Standard, and RAL colors converting it to different brands. There's even WWII and Modern Russian charts in there. I can highly recommend this book for anybody painting models (figures, aircraft, armor, or naval) as the data is probably in there.
I should have had this book years ago!! gary

Hi all Yet another freebie arrival! This was a gift from someone at the small modelling club I joined last year. The member sitting next to me was working on it but after putting a few pieces on decided it was too fiddly for his liking, so gave it to me knowing I only do 1/72. And he wouldn't even take any money for it! It even comes with two brass barrels!!! ATB. Andrew IMG_20180423_213935063 by Andrew Thomas, on Flickr

I found the MiniArt SU122 and the Dragon 15cm Hetzer in a 50% off sale. I can highly recommend the SU122, and can see me getting the SU85 to go with the SU122. gary

I've held forth on Tobias' "Ratte" thread about those additional weapons, and being able to swap them out. But I have reservations about the utility of the 128mm AA guns and the guided missiles on the "Ratte". Basically, they need a fire control system to be really effective, and a lot of magazine space that wouldn't be available on the beast itself (and a reloading system for the missile launcher). Perhaps the "Ratte" needs some sort of escort behemoth, a sort of monstrous cross between a BMPT "Terminator" and a "Tunguska" AA system to accommodate them? The 128mm AA guns probably also need an armoured enclosure (I believe one Zwilling operated by the Kriegsmarine as a shore battery was so fitted) but then could then be effective as a dual-purpose weapon: although not adopted as a PaK they were used as such on the two "Sturer Emil".
Regards,
M

Got these from one ofmy favourite sellers on ebay - the first two were auctions that ended while most people here watched Germany getting beaten by Mexico, so few bidders got their oar in - paid about €10 for the T-37 and €20 for the ZIS: This I got because I think it looks cool and at €30 about €25 below what usually gets charged for it:

I think I've told all of you at one time or another, that I want to build two Kursk Panthers. An early and one from a later batch. I got the last piece of the puzzle yesterday afternoon. The first will be an early batch Panther D with the extra stowage boxes supplied at the factory. That one is going to be from Zvezda, as it's pretty much complete. I'll probably replace the tracks and wheels with after market. The other kit is the new Meng Panther D, and trust me there's a lot of parts in that box! Surprisingly, it came with the rear mounted stowage boxes, but not the long one mounted on the side. The Meng kit came with a metal barrel, and some really nice photo etch. Now I'm thinking I want a second and possibly a third Meng panther D for a third Panther project. Plus I've picked up some other kits: * RFM Fehmann Tiger I (been wanting this one for quite awhile) * Asuka M4a3 (76) VVSS late Sherman tank * Asuka M4a2 Sherman (direct vision) with early VVSS suspension * Tristar Marder III M from Hobby Boss gary

So Dierk, I'm assuming that you have a 'reverse-hooligan' buying strategy in play while the World Cup is ongoing? Seems to have worked out well, nice haul.

The world cup's an added bonus, but generally I find summer is the best time for bargain hunting kits on evilbay - most modellers are busy doing other things

Last Friday I almost pulled the plug and bought a Trumpeter JS-2 tank, but didn't. Today I had to go up north to the fly shop for some leaders, so I dropped by the LHS up there. They had the JS-1 and JS-2 for 50% off, so I grabbed the JS-2. Then buried deep in the pile were two Bronco SWS half tracks. They had the one with the inferred search light and the one with the 20mm quad cannon setup. I bought the one with the 20mm cannon. I may change the 20mm gun for a 30mm Jabo Schreck, as they were starting to use them in late 1944. gary

IIRC the Bronco SWS kits are molds they took over from someone else although the exact brand escapes me at the moment...

IIRC the Bronco SWS kits are molds they took over from someone else although the exact brand escapes me at the moment... The molds are great Wall Hobby. Been on the hunt for an SWS Panzer Werfer for years, and it looks like the best solution is the armored SWS cargo hauler. I may get another SWS kit from GWH with the 37mm flak mounted on it. Wish they'd do the full range. Dragon does a pretty nice 30mm Jabo Schreck, but have not checked to see if the modified the carriage to see if they beefed it up. (pretty much a 20mm flak) I bought the Jabo to build a very late Whirblewind, but that project's been on the shelf for a couple years. I did finally get my hands on the right data to do the driver and radio operator's hatches. Just was not even slightly happy with the turret. gary

Hi all
Yet more essential purchases!
I was very restrained at Tankfest and only made one purchase.
Been after this for a while but there seem to have been stock issues based on all the 'out of stock' notifications. Got it at the old price (RRP now £18.95) and obviously saved on P&P that most online retailers want to add (that said have just found it for £16.95 this morning without P&P )
I have plans for a kit bash with one of them so watch this space......in about a decade at my current build rate
