My newest project is a Lend Lease Matilda armed with the ZiS-5-76mm gun. I will be building it as a proposed production version. Links on development: warspot.ru/7198-novyy-mech-dlya-matildywww.tanks-encyclopedia.com/ww2/soviet/matilda-mk-iv-zis-5/There is a resin conversion kit but looking at the images, it isn't very accurate. I used the photos from Warspot and created the parts in 3D CAD. I used the newer Tamiya Red Army Matilda kit and spare parts from a trumpeter KV-1 to estimate the dimensions. Then I had to guess on some of the details like plate orientation and how it was mounted to the Matilda turret. I may not be as accurate as I want but there are very few reference photos. The parts were designed in SolidWorks and are being printed by Shapeways. I have sent the parts out to be printed and will know in about a week how close I am. Designing the parts and sending them to Shapeways seems to be a good alternative to buying a 3d-printer if you only need it occasionally.
I would like to read what was your experience, as I already bought from them two times in the past.

Tobi - especially since those higher res printers cost many thousands of dollars. This will be my second order with Shapeways. I know there will be a bit of cleanup but I oriented the build some hopefully the round holes are round.

I've seen pics of this thing before, just a little awkward looking. Should make a nifty model.

Tobi, what CAD program are you using?

Very cool! Were the Trumpeter KV parts not usable at all, limiting what you would have needed to 3d print?

Thanks all for your interest. I received the 3D printed parts on Friday. There is a slight texture that will sand out. The material is more brittle than kit styrene and needs to be handled with care. I designed the parts in SolidWorks. I'm familiar with it from work. Dupes - I could have scratch-built and converted the Trumptere KV parts but this was much easier and far more accurate. Plus I wanted to see how Shapeways quality and tolerance handled parts like this. My prior experience was with tiny parts. This is more involved. This is the parts sprue after taking out of the bubble wrap. The frosted material is hard to tell detail and build lines... so after scrubbing with rubbbing alcohol - not sure if that was necessary - I applied a coat of Tamiya primer to show the print detail.

Tobi, what CAD program are you using? Joel, sorry for my late response, I'm working with CATIA V5, but I also have somewhere an old student version of Solid Edge.

Parts are looking really good. I saw at Shapeways some items are offered in two versions regarding surface. Depends on your needs, of course you have to pay more for extra smooth. I tried it once for the 30,5cm ammunition of the Bär heavy mortar and it really makes a difference, but an expensive one.
Think I should finally give myself a start and tackle the M109 SPH idler wheels to replace the odd ones in my Italeri kit.
Which glue has to be used, BTW? I remember working in a prototype workshop as a student and they took just pure acetone to assemble a clean air duct for an Audi.

Tobi - I used the highest setting for print quality. It was about $10 more but worth it to me if it meant less cleanup.
I used regular superglue. The stuff is stronger than the parts.

Gad, it looks like the gun would have whacked the back of the turret on recoil. Plenty of room Comrade Gunner!

The shell basket *just* clears the turret ring. The commander/gunner has room, the loader does not which is partially why the project was cancelled.

Funny thing, the stereo-lithography marks on the gun mantlet look a little like torch cuts. Let the color come!

Toby - If I had oriented the parts differently, i could have taken advantage of the build lines for that purpose.
Joel - Thanks.

Nicely done! In the meantime I've pulled myself together and designed the mentioned idler wheels for the M109 (which turned out really good), so thanks for the little push resulting from your inspiring example. Today I also received a E-25 Jagdpanzer gearbox, which is purely fictional as there only exists a functional diagram of it, but was fun to develop since I tried to make it feasible both from a manufacturing and a functional POV.

Tobi - Thanks! I'm glad to hear this inspired you to create your own parts. It's very rewarding seeing your own creation in 3D isn't it?
George - Thank you!
rbaer - Thanks. Not any time soon. There were some fit issues and some tweaks required if I was ever going to release it. I just don't feel like revisiting those issues right now.

John - Thanks! Not at the moment. I had some fit issues with the turned barrel that I was comfortable with adjusting but would not want to try an sell something that required fixing. Maybe one day I will go back and update the file.
Leon - Thank you!
