Today I worked on both the Stabilizer and the rudder. Lots of bits to be added to the basic frames, mainly to give them thickness and allow for shaping. Got the basic stabilizor frame assembled, then set aside to dry. I screwed up on the rudder assembly. I was supposed to use 3/32 X 3/16 for the rib cores and I used 3/32 sq instead on the first assembly. 3/16 is needed because the rudder is two layers thick with overlapping joints. So, I had to cut another set of 3/32 rib cores and glue them on over the first set. Made quite a bit of extra work for myself. I did get the rudder assembled. The glue is drying , but she'll be ready for fairing and shaping tomorrow. Then got some more rib cores done on the stabilizer. I'll finish that assembly tomorrow. I'd like to get the nacelles done too so I can take all these assemblies out to the workshop for fairing in with the plane and sanding. Makes for a lot of dust and a lot of cleanup in the model room if I do it there. Coming along fine though. Not to far off from the final fitting and detail work. I want to bring it to next month's IPMS club meeting. ( there will be plastic wheels, vac formed plastic nose cowl, engine cowls, canopy and a few other bits) so I'll call it "multi media". They show a plan for a balsa stand, but I think I'm gonna use some other material for it. EJ

Well, finished up the stabilizor flipped it over and finished the other side. She's ready for fairing and sanding. Assembled the nacelles except for the stringers. Will do those tomorrow. Then, out to the shop to plane and sand all the assemblies. Next post they will be ready to assemble into a plane. This little tool was a big asset. Cuts square, unlike a chopper and very clean cut. great for repetitive cuts. EJ

Finished up the nacelles and sanded them out. Look good, and, they fit up very nice to the center wing section. A couple pics of the assemblies laid out. I need to fair in and sand out the wing sections, the stabilizer and the rudder. It's to hot out today to do that in the workshop where I won't dirty up the model room with wood dust. Tomorrow is supposed to be cooler. The blue card is the size of a credit card. EJ

Are you planning to fly this huge beast? If so what sort of propulsion will you be using?

Are you planning to fly this huge beast? If so what sort of propulsion will you be using? No, I really like the look of the frame. I'm gonna clear coat and apply some of the trim parts, then just hang her up from the ceiling. I used to fly these things (60 years ago or so) but that was the day of gasoline engines and wire control, flying in a circle. This thing has 2 engines so I don't know how that would work. The new stuff, electric motors, radio control etc, there must be a way to do it but that's way over my head now. I do have a P-40 kit with one engine. The kit has the linkage for the stabilizer control and a plywood bulkhead to mount an engine to, maybe a little cub ore something. You got me thinking now. Spent a good part of the day out in the shop, planing and sanding. Nice work bench, coffee pot, oldies music and a good drafting chair. A few neighbors stopped by to see what was going on. Made for a great day. Did the wings first. Profile Taper to the tip. They came out nice. Then the stabilizor Broke a couple cross bits and had to replace them. Some of the balsa struts were of pretty soft wood. Then the fin Set the wings up with the center section and the tips propped up on 1 9/16" blocks. Clamped the right and left sides to the center. Removed the blocks and they stayed right where they were. PERFECT Dihedrel on both wings with no sanding, fillers or adjustments. I can't believe it!! Tomorrow, start to spray a clear coat on it. Sanding sealer, sand lightly, then a couple semi gloss clear coats. Then assemble the large components. EJ.

You might want to reconsider leaving the aircraft in a "open frame" state. Dusting and decobwebbing are fraught with many opportunities to damage the hard work you have put into this kit. Just my opinion, if you feel the need, tell me I'm full of &*it and I won't ne offended. (My wife tells me I'm full of it on a daily basis) ;<)

You might want to reconsider leaving the aircraft in a "open frame" state. Dusting and decobwebbing are fraught with many opportunities to damage the hard work you have put into this kit. Just my opinion, if you feel the need, tell me I'm full of &*it and I won't ne offended. (My wife tells me I'm full of it on a daily basis) ;<) Well, I do keep most of my models in a glass case where dust is not an issue, but this thing is kinda big so I'll have to hang it from the ceiling in the den or office. Dust will be an issue but wifey is pretty careful and precise when cleaning around my models. I usually just use a bit of canned air when necessary. I bought this thing because; The kit was wood and I like working with wood I liked the box art that showed it in the frame configuration It was the first plane I ever flew in It flew me to my first big adventure of my life at age 18, to pick up my first ship after joining the US Navy. However - having done this thing (and it will remain an open frame) it brought back great memories of building and flying engine driven wire controlled balsa planes when I was in my teens (60 or so years ago). After looking into that further, I think I'm hooked. So anyway, After finishing up a couple details and a final touch up sanding, I got ready to clear-coat. I had about 1/2 bottle of Aero Gloss dope sanding sealer, but wasn't sure it would be enough. So, off to the LHS. My favorite store did not have any. He said it was discontinued. Went to My other local store and that store has been transformed into a strictly drones and stuff like that.. No trains, no models, etc. Then went to Hobbytown, it was closed - out of business. GEEZE! Went on line to Midwest Products. It is no longer in their catalog. Several other sites, the same thing. Sig has a similar product on their list, and Brodak Mfg has a line with sanding sealer and clear-coat in both Butyrate and Nitrate dope product line. Since I'm not finishing a paper/silk-span cover, just the wood, I looked around my shop. I have 4 gallons of Sherwin Williams sanding sealer and 5 gallons of their satin lacquer finish coat. I know how this stuff works as I've used hundreds of gallons of the stuff. So, that's what I did. Worked great. I might have to order a bit of the alternatives just to see how they work in case I do another kit with the cover. Heavens Eagle got me to thinking about flying again. I found it is possible to do a twin engine, with electric motors and RC controls. The single engine kits can be done with fuel motors and control wires, electric motors and RC controls, and they even sell them with the rubber band drives for free flight. The sky is the limit now. By the way Moon Puppy, Brodak and Hobby King have 3 blade props in glass fiber in both right and left rotations. Gettin em ordered man! Am I ever in trouble now! Anyway, I got everything coated with sanding sealer, sanded them down, one coat of clear lacquer. Waiting for it to dry and gas out before I bring them back in the model room. Then start assembly. EJ

Clear coated with sanding sealer, sanded out, one coat of clear lacquer. Allowed it to dry for a day or so, then began assembly of the major parts. Wings and center part, nacelles to the wings, stabilizer to fuselage, tail fin to stabilizer/fuselage assy. Lastly, the wing assy to the fuselage. I like it. The first plane model of any type I've done in about 60 years. I might have to get back into building some motorized babies that really fly. Next, the landing gear, props, and plastic parts like the canopy, nose cowl, engine cowls and such. I need to get a quality "aluminum" paint for the plastics. Thinking of trying Alclad for that. I thought I had found plastic props, but couldn't find any in the correct scale. No luck on Shapeways either. I would need 4 X 4, 3 blade props, one left and one right for this scale. So, I guess I'll just do the wood ones like they show in the instructions. There will be an interruption in the build, as I'll be going to the 50th anniversary reunion of the USS ESSEX Association for a week. Being held in Louisville KY where the Association was formed, the year the ESSEX was decommissioned. EJ

Now the non wood parts and the vac formed stuff. I've never worked with vac formed parts. What kind of glue should I use for them? The landing gear. Now I have to be careful so as to not break any parts loose and not break off the little projections. This might be the toughest part for me. The landing gear instructions. Tail gear parts, except the support wire. Tail gear wire support, bent to shape and epoxied in place. Main landing gear parts with the wire supports bent to shape. I messed up on the wheels. Apparently, there used to be vac formed wheel halves that needed balsa disks glued inside of them to assemble correctly. My kit has moulded wheel halves. I tried assembling them with the balsa disks. The instructions show the vac formed assy in one place, then discusses the moulded wheels in another that I missed. My first try was a failure, so popped them apart, removed the balsa disks, cleaned them up and glued them together as in the picture. EJ

Haven't gotten any further on it. Was gone to my Ship's reunion and had lots of financial stuff to record and catch up on after. I did start on the vac formed nose and canopy. Glued them on with thick super glue and welded them together with ProWeld. Need to fill a bit and sand the joint, then I'll mask off and paint them "aluminum". I got a rattle can of Tamiya TS-30 "silver leaf" for that.
I really messed up the main wheels. I originally put the wood disk spacers in between the wheel halves as directed, but thought it looked funny. So, I took them apart and glued the two halves directly together. When I went to install the wire / plastic landing gear struts, I found they were way too narrow. Now I can't get them apart easily and messes one up pretty badly, so I re-ordered the parts. Expect they will be here soon.
Would like to bring it to the club meeting on the 24th. We'll see.

Man EJ...great build you've got going here! I read it from the beginning. Really brought back some good memories for me too! This plane is one of my favorite planes also.
I can't wait to see the finished pics of this cool Bird!
