....is something dear to my heart, being both a Sherman and Israeli: Tammy's M51, a real sweetheart of a kit. I have a couple of pics, and will get a couple more shortly reflecting progress to date. I'm adding welds, doing grab handles from wire, etc., typical Shermie improvements. I'm not a fan of brass, so trying to keep it to a minimum. In fact, the brass tow cable brackets on the upper mid hull are now replaced with Formations resin parts. Anyway, the pic: More later, thanks for looking, as always.

Joe, prof, thanks. It's a very well engineered kit, easy to add detail to. I plan to snatch this kit up anytime I see one on a vendor's table as a basis for conversions as well. After starting this one, I have no desire to get in to the Dragon -E8(105) on the shelf. In fact, it'll become part of the parts stash. Gary, yeah it's effin cold. My man cave is on the cold side, too.

Exactly. I have a Dragon -E8(105) in the stash, and I'm in no hurry to get into the bogies in that kit. I think Tamiya did a fine job with theirs, using eight parts.

Current pics: Engine deck detail and cable brackets: Aux. generator muffler. The heat shield will be re-done, as the bend should be radiused, rather than 90 degrees: Junk rack and cleaning rods. Rods are Academy, with the Tamiya swab added. Academy shovel, re-worked bracket on scoop-end, and top view: Being a Sherman junkie has its benefits sometimes, especially when a kit like this hits: something that's a very solid foundation, goes together well and reasonably accurate to boot. I'm in Shermie heaven.

Thanks, Dave. I built the old Academy M51 when it first came out, didn't enjoy it nearly as much as this one. In fact, the Acad example will probably join the parts bin soon.

Very nice work on this one Russ! I moved it over to the Armor forum since it's a WIP vs. the Gallery.

Got it Bill. I was wondering..... Okay, latest pics: Tools, tools, tools. Left rear, with spacers on can bracket. All the rest of the brackets have the spacers made from plastic rod stock as well. What a pain..... New heat shield, spare tracks and tool box. I've got a little fuzz to clean up still. I separated the track blocks and added a few dings to the box. Other side. And that which will make me go blind: Those little rod spacers are something I feel Tamiya could have done a lot easier than me, but hey.

Andy, TRM, thanks. This is my new "home" I guess..... Okay, turret pics: A few parts from Dragon and Acad. are in there, and yes, I hinged the commander's hatch, like I had nothing else to do. The mantlet dust cover fit pretty good, but I did add a touch of putty at the seams that probably wasn't necessary. Onward through the fog!

Nice work on the hinge pin! Funny how something like that can nag at you if you don't address it, your solution looks just right.

Loving the looks of this one...seconding the call for paint!
Question - why the DML/Academy parts? Did Tamiya fall through on the cupola?

Post by rbaer on Jan 26, 2013 12:19:51 GMT -5
Thanks, dupes. I pulled the Dragon and Acad cupolas out of the parts stash and compared them to the Tamiya part. I think Tamiya's part is accurate but the vision block surrounds seemed underdone. They're probably more to scale than the others, but after primer and paint, I think they'd almost go away. I used the Dragon part since it has clear inserts for the glass, which I should be able to install after weathering, from underneath. If not, Micro Krystal Klear to the rescue. I did think Tamiya's hatch was weak, no other word for it. BTW, the center section of the hatch hinge pin will be sleeved with a piece of tube, to better replicate what I think is a torsion spring, to assist in raising what is probably a very heavy hunk of steel.
