Hello all! I got back into model building a few years ago, after a near three decade absence. It was a re-start more or less on a whim, but I couldn't believe how far the hobby had come, and it meshed with my passion for art. I am a trained Fine Artist, and this just felt like a natural extension. As a kid, I basically slapped kits together as toys; but now, it is a hobby; a craft. I regard all modelers' work as pseudo-sculpture...artwork in their own right. Getting back in the swing of things was kinda like riding a bike, and I was surprised how natural it felt. However, the level of detail and care in now building a model "the right way" makes it much more of a Zen experience for me, and hours whisk by unnoticed. I've just recently started use of airbrushing. I consider myself a decent model builder, but I still have a lot to learn; realizing that this hobby has a continual learning curve, I've still a steep climb to the crest! I run a wargaming site, and the two hobbies actually share a lot in common....with building and painting techniques. I'm also a moderator on a couple other sites. I look forward to meeting the members here and contributing what I can. And I look forward to learning form the fine members here. See you around the boards!

Hello all! I still have a lot to learn; realizing that this hobby has a continual learning curve, I've still a steep climb to the crest! Welcome Whiterook! I love your quote above. I have been modeling for 38 years very nearly without pause. I get a lot of joy out of knowing that I will never model as well as I want to. The worthwhile, lifelong pursuit of a moving target.... Enjoy the climb man! I must say - some of the top modelers have an art education. Your skills will improve rapidly with the benefit of your training. Guys like me have to check all of the blind alleys. Steve

Thanks so much everyone...I'm blown away with all the quick responses and the warm welcome you've all shared.
I'm a firm believer that the best lessons aren't from magazine articles, books, or "the masters"; but rather, people from everyday walks of life, that share their love and respect for a very cool endeavor such as this whacky love affair with plastic. In regards to the latter, we are all the masters.

Welcome to the best lil' ol' forum on the internets White Rook!! I have frequented a few forums in my time, and I can say without a doubt, you will probably not find a nicer and more talented bunch of fellas around! I have already learned a great deal in my short time here, and these guys are a constant inspiration to me! I don't get the time to post every day around here, but nevertheless, I still poke my head in the door a couple of times a day to see whats happening. It's just a great place to be! I really hope you get a lot out of this place, I know we are all really keen to see some of your creations! Speaking of which, what's your poison? Aircraft? Armor? Figures? Sci-fi? I imagine with a wargaming background there would be some armor in there? I'm a wingy thing man myself, but if you're a tracky thing kinda guy, I won't hold it against you!! Welcome to the fun!! Cheers, Sam

I went to the show twice, with entries in the second show, two and three years ago. Last year, I had entries for the competition but, I was on business travel and just got back before the show...but alas, only remembered the show two weeks late!!! So I am ready this year and will indeed be there, with entries. I didn't know you all had a table....I'll pop by definitely and introduce myself.

Geez, the ol' Rommel's Rod, haven't seen that kit in years! Mate of mine built that years ago, and it always cracked me up with that lil' skeleton of Rommel! What a blast from the past, I look forward to seeing your rendition mate! Cheers, Sam

Cheers, Sam I loved building Romme's Rod ...errrrr, somehow, that didn't come out quite right....but I digress; my version was done for a personal Halloween Build challenge I undertook, to see if I could complete it by the Howling Hour and post pics at midnight Halloween night. I made it, glad t say. I tricked it out a little, with a modified folding roof tha is more casket-like, and outfitted Herr Rommel and his driver in tattered decomposed clothes and bling. I'll put up a thread after I'm done my Viper. BTW...someone mentioned wings & wheels coming up next Sunday....none of you are judges, are 'ya??? I got some stuff I'm entering and I'd hate to let the cat out of the bag, as I feel I finally have a minimal shot at one of those blasted medals I covet so!!!

Nope, not judging there, but maybe at AMPS East again. We'll be hanging out at the MSC table at W&W talking plastic and maybe working on a model to pass the time. Gonna maybe take care pf a couple of those wish list kits I have on Hobby Intel.

WR, I just wanted to warn you... don't let Rob make you spend big bucks on AK products. I fell into his trap last year at Auburn... how dumb of me!

WR, Iain will hopefully be there. So you can ask the man himself any questions you may have. oh yeah, don't listen to Andy. He was pretty much like a little kid in a toy store and wanted to buy everything he saw. Lost count of how many times he brought stuff out to the car. Think I might have seen a part to a tank from the museum under his jacket....can't be sure tho...lol

Last time I went to the show, I made a couple trips out to the car, myself!!! That's the one time you REALLY don't want to have your car stolen!! I went to a huge board and miniatures gaming convention in Ohio back in '07 where I had my large suitcase loaded to the brim with games (stuffed all my clothes in a carry-on bursting at the seams). That was back when TSA wanted you to unlock your bags as they went into their possession. I said, "...no way!" They said, "...well, be prepared to perhaps have the lock cut off!" I said, "I'll take that chance over some gorilla-handed baggage handler walking home worth $500 worth of wargames for his kid!!!!" The games made it home....locked!
