Seeing as i am new here i thought i would start off with some of my aircraft builds...just for the fun of it. The inspiration for this build came from the CONA last year. This got me thinking about how the USAF would handle the same thing and i came up with the idea to do a NMF F-16....but based on what? In my mind the F-16 could equate to the P-51 so i started to look around for P-51 schemes and finally settled on one from Korea in 1951. The P-51 in question belonged to the 12th Fighter Bomber Squadron(FBS), 18th FBG based at Chinhae Air Force base in 1951. This particular P-51 was called "Mouse Meat" although i do not know who the pilot was. The reason i choose this scheme was the sharks mouth and the overall NMF. The second jet is the RAF Typhoon. It is the two seat revel version. Not a bad model, although plenty of filler was required and the instructions for the under carriage are best not mentioned, never mind the fit/location of the outer doors for the under carriage. Eventually it all turned out ok though and considering the price i a cannot complain too much. I used LifeColor acrylics for the the main painting and the detail painting was done with Valejo Model Color. There were in the region of 190 decals to apply, man tanks are way easier than jets when it comes to decals*lol* The exhausts were painted using Alclad , very nice indeed and easy to work with. The third jet is an IDF F-16 Barak, the Italeri version. There is something about the shape of the early F-16's that i totally love. It is not a bad model to build, there are a couple of areas that require some patience/swearing but other than that it went together very well. I got this for £16.99 and you do get an awful lot of plastic for that money. The weapons load out alone is enough for three aircraft. The decals are by Cartograf and mostly went on with out any dramas. Again the paint is LifeColor, although i am not happy with how the green turned out. I applied a dark black/brown wash once it had been gloss varnished. For some reason the left wing, looking from the back, would not accept the wash. No matter how long i left it on there when i wiped it off all of it came off. However it worked fine on the rest of the Barak. Thats it for now. I have a F4G Phantom on the go and will post some pics when it is finished. All constructive comments are most welcome Regards from the Swamp Eth

Thanks for all the positive comments guys, i must admit i did not expect the response to be so positive. I have just finished a Tamiya F15C and i decided to use the Revell F15 Tigermeet decals on this one. They are not correct for an F15C but i think they look good. The F15 was painted with Xtracrylics Light Ghost grey and Dark Ghost Ghost Grey. There is not much difference between the two colours and to be honest i was a bit disappointed with how the demarcation came out. I have seen photos of F15's were the demarcation between the colours was much greater....oh well next time i will try a custom mix of the paints to try and get a more accurate colour. Hi Rob, i keep all my models in the loft. It has been boarded out and insulated and i have built two shelving units in there. I am running out of space though as the planes do take up way more room than my AFV's. I have no idea where i am going to put teh 1/32nd scale aircraft i have to build, maybe they will hang from the ceiling Regards from the Swamp Eth

Hi Chris, thank you for the kind words mate, i appreciate them. Will you be at On Tracks at the end of Feb? It would be good to catch up if you can make it? Hi John, as long as you like them there is no need to know a lot about them Thanks for the kind words! Hi Frank, the more i look at the F16 the more i like it as well. I will definately be doing another NMF when i have the time. I want to get the Phantom and the Tigermeet Mirage finished then i need to get some paint on the three armour builds i have under way. Thank you for your kind words. Regards from the Swamp Eth

Hi Frank, i have not built an F104 but i do have the Tigermeet one in my stash that i fully intend to get to, hopefully in the near future and maybe after i have finished the Phantom. Hi Paul, thank you for the kind words i appreciate you taking the time reply. As to the panel lines? I use the Pro Modeller was. What i do is get all the decals on, gloss coat the model, and then i do an all over wash with the Pro Modellers product. Leave it to dry for between 30-60 mins and then taking a piece of kitchen towel i moisten a corner of it and start to remove the wash from where i do not want it. Alweays ensure when removing the wash to do it in the direction of the air flow. IE from front to back. Sometimes i apply a second wash if the first one if not to my liking. YOu can by the Pro Modellers was from here- www.florymodels.co.uk/I would not recomend it for armour, but certainly would recomend it for Aircraft. Hi Dan, i agree with you mate, you make a verry good point there. However if you like colourful aircraft i would recommend looking at the Tigermeet birds, there are some fantastic schemes there and places like Syhart Decals www.syhartdecal.fr/ENG_index.htmprovide all the decals you could need to turn out an attracive plane. Hey Eth- very rude of me- but I actually started another thread discussing this one- and never posted here!
I saw the metal finished plane and a couple of days later couldn't find the thread again. It is fabulous!
I have never done a natural metal finish- but I have a subject that might be perfect for this treatment.
Can you point me toward some articles or SBS on painting like that?
Thanks- Steve

Hi Steve, some quick thoughts/pointers for you. First step it to make sure the model is totally dust/fingerprint/grime free. A wash in a bowl of warm soapy water usually does the trick. Then buff the model up with a sanding sponge. You really do need to have the model as smooth as possible before you start to paint. I use Alclad paints for my NMF and these need a gloss black primer to be applied first. I used Lifecolor Gloss Black on mine. Once this is on, make sure the surface is smooth etc and then decide on what Alclad to use. On the F16 i used Airframe Aluminium for the over all coat. Do not try to apply this in one go. Build up the layers until you are happy, literally mist them on. When this has dried, and it dries very quickly, you can then start to pick out various panels in other shades. I used various shades of Alumininium to create the effect you can see on the F16. I recommend you mask out the surrounding areas unless you are really, really good with an airbrush. For mine i used an Iwata Eclipse Cs with a .35mm needle and nozzle set up and had the compressor set at 18psi. When i was happy with the finish you have achieved seal it with Future, this really is the dogs whatsits when it comes to varnish. Before you apply the decals make sure the model is smooth, i cannot emphasise this enough when it comes to NMF finishes. Alclad will show up even the smallest scratch so be dilligent about this. When the decals are on and dry, cover the whole model with another few coats of Future to protect the decals and then weather the model as you want. I did not do much in the way of weathering on mine as i wanted it to look like a show plane. So i did an overall wash and that was it. Once i had removed the wash and was happy with the look i then used Humbrol dullcoat as the final step. If you have any futher questions please feel free to ask Regards from the Swamp Eth
