KV I kit #356
This model will be straight out of the box and done as an old rusty museum piece sitting out doors, maybe on a concrete pad or gravel.
Here is an example of what I have in mind, but a bit more rust and streaking.***FOR DISCUSSION ONLY*** 6-25-13 build updateStarting off with a pic of the build so far. many of the kit parts had been removed at some time and some cleaned and glued on the hull. I have started work on the turret.

Bill, T and Leon..thanks for chiming in on this one too. Pretty straight forward building of this model. Got her nearly finished, just have to fill and sand the ejector pin marks on the fenders.

This one is just about finished, just need to add the air intake screening and some tracks later. Will try to get pics up later.

6-26-13 updateGetting closer to the finish line on this one. Just have the intake screens to do and then later some tracks. This one will get painted a bit different than the other two since it's to be old and some what rusty. Here are just a few pics, I will have more on my website due to my PB account filling fast.

Leon I used the kit supplied copper braided cables. They look ok to me so I didn't bother to replace them.

Bill , yep just about ready. Got a bit side tracked with the Panther, but will get back to this one.
Luigi, Yep she is very much intact but with minor battle damage. The intake screen will be damaged and maybe one missing. I also removed one of the rear access hatches and 'welded' a thread plate in it's place.

Finished off the screens and have a primer coat on her. I have to let it dry/cure a day due to the high humidity right now, then the rust paint followed by green.

Thanks mate. Yeah I know it's not easy to keep up on all the threads here. Too many nice builds and too little time comment on all. easy to have one slip by you.

Update 6-28-13Slow but steady progress on this one. AB work on this is very slow because of the humidity here and the AB spattering no matter what I do. I did end up getting some light rust tones on using the Lifecolor paints. Pretty messy but it's just for a base rust undercoat. I then added some AK rust pigments. I added a lot more than I originally planned but hopefully it works out in the end. I have to apply to coats of satin clear to help seal the paint so the pigments don't come off so easy. A few areas have already lifted while taking the pics.

Bones, thanks bud. The green is actually darker than in the pics. There is one spot on the turret where the rust is showing.
Thanks CS, nice to be rusting again.
OK I just added a clear coat to seal the paint and pigments. Now here is where I am experimenting. Instead of a normal clear coat, or Future, I spray the AK gravel fixer on the model in two very light misted coats. This hopefully will d two things, first seal the paint/pigs and second also give the paint a satin finish. The heavy rust areas will remain a matt due to the pigs soaking the sealer, but the flat non rusted (pigs) looks satin. Using the gravel fixer is best done with a med. tipped old AB. The fixer will sl\tart to clump/gum up. A really good cleaning of the AB has to be done as soon as you finish spraying. Just thought I'd pass along some info and tips. I don't know how good this will work until it's dry/hardened and I can start to add pin washes and OPR streaking.

Well it's not quite working out as planned due to the pigments. Next I will have to go MUCH lighter with them, or not at all. No problem as I do plan on doing another one of these...lol Will try to get pics up tomorrow.

That's the downside sometimes to experiments...they don't always work out as intended the first time out. Keep at it though Rob, this one's shaping up nicely!

Right you are Bill. It's not all that bad, I was just rushing to get as much done as possible.
What my plans were/are is to do the chipping after the washes, streaking and other effects were finished. Problem that happened is that I forgot that the gravel fixer is an enamel and I didn't put an acrylic clear over it before working with the oils. The mineral spirits cut through the fixer and softened the paint, plus too much of the pigments. I did get some effects on the turret after I realized my mistake. i switched to acrylics for some of the weathering. The hull will get an acrylic clear this weekend, then back to the oils and AK effects.
Once I get some light weathering done I will set the model aside to cure for several weeks/months before I do the chipping. This way the paint is rock hard and I can get better, more dimensional chipping. So for now here are two shots of the turret.I've done a small test on the Panther turret since it has been drying/curing for two days and will post a pic of it later.

Ok I have done a bit of testing on the panther turret to see how this will work. The panther was first painted with Tamiya panzer gelb then light thin coats of AK late war colors Gelb. The AK paint has a some what satin finish to it and has been curing for about two days. I added some streaking using AK wash for ship decks and streaking grime as well as a pin washes with the ship deck wash. None of the paint lifted and none of the pigs were exposed. I went ahead and chipped the paint a bit to show what my goal is for the KV I later once all the pin washes etc have been applied. You can see in the close ups that the chipping is thick and more textured than if I were to simply apply a rust color and use the HS technique. The bright colored pigs will get toned down later.

Can definitely see a difference in the techniques as demonstrated on the Panther turret there Rob. Ought to do just fine on the KV after it's had some time to sit and cure. Just don't leave it too long!

Thanks Ian and yeah I dig those KV tanks.
Thanks Bill. Not to worry brother, the longer it sits the better, even after months. My T34 museum piece I was still able to chip over a year later.
