Very nice work John, what's the idea behind the pin washes on a dull coat then John. Love the tool handles what paint/colour did you use?

Late arrival in this blog but outstanding work! Watching your pin wash process with great interest as i'll be doing the same on my flat coated T-34. How do you go about the cleaning process? Do you just wait till it's dry then clean the overspill with a touch of thinners? Does this have any effect on the flat coat?

Thanks fellas! Ian, I like the results I get on a flat coat, but i need to learn to do it on a gloss coat Beast, Yes, I clean up the excess with thinner and a pointed brush. I let the wash dry, then go back and wipe down any splotches and tide marks. I let my flat coat cure for about a week before I pin wash and don't have any problems with it lifting.

First round of pin washes is complete. Now I’ll let this dry for a few days, then start filters.

Very nice BJ! Doing a pin wash over a gloss coat (or Future which is not a true true gloss as it retains some texture) allows the wash to flow more controllable and significantly reduces the amount of clean-up you have to do as a result of tide marks and blooming. Otherwise it's no different than what you're doing on a flat coat...the difference is you just flat coat after the pin wash instead of before. Give it a try some time, you'll be amazed I think at just how much easier it is in terms of reduced cleanup.

Thanks Bill, I have tried it before on a coat of future and the pin wash didn't seam to want to stay where I put it. I also like the effect I get on a flat coat. I get some subtle shading effects that way if you know what I mean. But, I am really listening to your advice, I'm going to give the gloss coat another try on the next build.

Hi BJ, I think it's extremely looking good mate! I must say the pinwashes, I tried it both and can't say which coat I prefer pinning onto . although I usually stick to a semi-gloss coat (Tamiya Clear mixed 50-50 with Tamiya Flat) but I'd say, stick with what you're doing, 'cause you're doin' it dang good partner! Cheers

Not trying to talk you into one method or the other BJ, each one has their benefits/drawbacks! I typically will do my pin wash after I've done the filters and dot weathering, so I'm not truly working on a gloss surface when that's happening, but it's not a dead-flat surface either like you get with a dull coat application. The Future/gloss is also still there working as a protective barrier and the pin wash just adds the final 'layer' if you will over the previous steps to add depth. I apply it with a very fine pointed brush (10/0 typically) to give more precision with both the wash and the clean-up that follows, so just want to be clear on that score if you decide to attempt it differently. Don't want to mislead you on that score.

Don't want to mislead you on that score. No worries brother Bill. That's why we have these conversations. We learn from each other, and give ideas to others reading this. I do an initial pin wash, then apply filters and streaking. I will then go back over my pin wash as needed. This also helps with the layering effect. As uncle Tony says "there's more than one way to skn a cat"

I have to go with Tony on that simply axiom that we often forget, little hard on cats but there are lots of them.

Got the filter applied this weekend. I see a few splotchy spots that I’ll go back and soften up a bit. Let this dry a bit then I’ll start on the streaking effects.
