Hey fellas, Even though I have not chimed in a lot, I have been busy with my build. Here is a quick rundown: The parts: Overall, the parts are pretty nice, but there are a some pretty heinous ejector pin marks. The good news is, I have no intention of leaving the hatches open, so these will all be hidden, so I won't have to deal with them: The kit comes with a nice, but basic interior. Again, since everything will be buttoned up, I did not spend a ton of time on it, just kinda threw it all together, then painted it black: On to the exterior, and the first few steps have you build up the suspension: Then it is on to the upper hull. There are a lot of ballistic viewports on this build. I was surprised how much could be seen through them, so I decided I needed to obscure the inside of them. So, I added some baremetal foil, then painted in Tamiya clear green to give it the effect I want. In the pic, I've only applied the first coat of green. I'll need a couple more: So, this is where she is at: And this is where I hope to take her:

You're really going for the digi-cam? We need to discuss how you're going to pull it off.

Judging by the sheer quality of those round precision recesses in there Boyd, this has GOT to be Trumpeter - no-one else lavishes that much care in fitting in quite so many of them and ensuring they meet exacting quality standards....

OK guys, I've been plugging away at this for the last few days and have it pretty well built. I had to wait for some RB Models .30-cal barrels to finish up the turret. Got 'em yesterday, so this is where we stand: Mmmmm.... RB Barrels.... but a crappy pic... So, I had decided not to do anything to this kit. I had decided I would build it OOB, with only a couple extra bits (RB Barrels) added. But....... You see, there is this 'hole' in the front of the hole that hull where the winch would be. You get a chain and a hook, but NO WINCH. And you can see into the gap... so I decided that would not do. It was quick work to cut some styrene rod and put a couple discs at either end to at least represent a winch if anyone peeks: Then there are the springs on the hatches. There are a LOT of hatches on this thing and they have molded on springs. At first, I was content to simply clean up the plastic, but then it began to wear on me, so, again, a quick fix: And finally, the headlight guards. The plastic ones are just a little mushy and needed a lot of cleanup. So, I broke out some brass wire and (GASP) my soldering iron. And, GOSH DARN IT, I did it. I soldered!!! So, I guess I couldn't help myself and made a few tweaks....

Dupes, a couple hours. The winch and the springs were quick. It is my poor soldering skills that really added time to the headlight guards.
Next step is to go through and mask all those 'windows' so I can put some paint on her!

So would you do the same mods again (like on the other four variants)?

So would you do the same mods again (like on the other four variants)? Absolutely. If I'd known going in what improvements to make, I think it would have been smoother, but I was flying by the seat of my pants.

Would it make sense to assembly-line the mods for all of them? Or will each variant be considerably different? I haven't poked through the boxes carefully enough to know how drastic the changes were.

Ummmm, that is a good question. I think the next one - the M-706 Armored Improved, is basically the same vehicle with smoke grenade launchers, different MGs, and that is about it. So that one should be pretty similar. The other three... I could not tell you off the top of my head. I think the light guards are the same. I don't know if the turreted ones have the same winch hole or the same number of hatches. Either way, I bet the hatches still have the same type of spring, so that would be the same as well. So maybe the assembly line would be a good approach.

Thanks for the support, Thom, Dicky, Pete, and Andy.
I've got this guy about ready for paint. Just a couple more windows to mask before I shoot the base coat. Then its on to try that digi camo scheme, which I have no idea how to pull off.
Any suggestions? I'm all ears.

How many colors of digi-squares are there? If it's only one, I would spray that color first, mask with hundreds of tape squares, and then overcoat with the "base" color.

That, in a nutshell, is my plan. The big challenge is that there are three or four colors of digi-squares. So, I've got to plan it our carefully.

Whichever way you go, base color last.
Four colors? Yowza. You may want to see if you can find a punch that makes the right size square in your tape?

Hahahahaha...whatever works. Still not going to be easy - I've mulled over how to do a similar scheme on a ZTZ-99 for quite a while. :/
