This is from the other forum so i just made it one post. If my text seems funny its cause i only added picture possts. Thanks for checking it out!
I think this is in the right spot. could be wrong, history isnt my strong suit. I apologize if wrong.
So, i picked this up while im waiting for a part on my MP4/4 as a little break from tiny parts. Of course i open the box and its full of tiny parts, but not as tiny as the Top Studio kit im working on..
This is my first Military Vehicle, as well as my first real weathering ( i did a charger, but i experimented on my own, no tutorials or help so i was guessing). Its a WIP, but figured id show my progress. TRM has been a HUGE help in showing me the weathering ropes. I probably ask too much of him but thats how i am. 1000 questions. Thanks TRM!
To begin our journey....
I never did a military vehicle so this may be standard issue but i was pretty impressed with the quality of it. Lots of Rivet details, and detail in general. Its by Trumpeteer. Picked it up at a show last minute. Glad i did. No flash to speak of, and its going together really well. I wanted it to look like its been through some years instead of new, cause what fun is new?
I only had to fix one thing so far, on the skis you have to put the suspension on in between PE parts, and the springs have an angled sprue, so when you cut them it doesnt leave a round rod like it should, and it kinda causes the exacto to track the sprue angle so i cut them all too short, couldnt put them into the PE holes. See pic..
so what i did was i cut the ends of each spring off, then glued them to some styrene rod i had laying around for another build. this let me put them through the PE and then glue to the spring. then put coardboard as a spacer so it didnt sit flat on the ski. worked out well actually.
so with that done, i put together sub assemblies, like the engine and such to get ready for paint..
Engine had a lot of small fiddly parts.. looks good though..
Ski Primered..
Then i got to painting.. Started with the engine, the plans show all black but thats kinda boring so i decided to change it up a little. Alclad Pale gold, and light Alclad Stainless Steel, then Dullcoated and black washed. I have some more to do but waiting to do final washes when my MIG stuff shows up.
Preshaded the body, but kind of laid paint on too thick, have to work on that, so i decided to do a wash, and will do mud and other stuff later. Same with skis. Still have to do some light chipping as well. Again, first time really working with oil wash or any real weathering.. could be better. but im happy.
Engine Shroud..
Doors..
For the interior I went with USSR Green, didnt like it at first cause it was bright green, but im also color blind so it may just be off putting to me. Decided to beat it up and it looks much better than just being one color. I didnt go crazy with detail cause the doors/windows are so small you wont really see much, but it was good practice anyhow. Went a little overboard with chipping but first time, and i was thinking it would be beat up, i mean they wont be cleaning anything in there.
so thats where it stands right now, painting the suspension. decided to match the engine a bit so the springs are alclad pale gold and rest is alclad SS with dullcote to remove shine. BTW, dull cote eats at alclad (both laquer i guess) so it weathered it nicely. worked to my advantage. luckily...
I got some mig stuff in so im going to try some streaking under joints and windows, just a lil. then some mud/dirt and i can put her together.
small update:
Suspension parts. need to do more washing but you get the idea..
Suspension Brackets, first time using hairspray. came out pretty good after a wash...
well, had a little break from modeling due to work. got some more work done. almost there! im pretty happy with it.
still need to add some oil drips and such near the engine, and add the last parts. then im going to make a base from a frame cause the thing is ridiculously fragile. im pretty happy with it considering its my first real weathering project. did a car before but didnt know about all these weathering products so it was just ok.engine is all attached now, but ill take pics when its dry.
More Progress..
Engine/Shroud attached. Fluid lines to skis attached (made them look leaky onto skis). Straps added to front. Light added.
Just have to do the fluid stuff where the engine sits. still figuring that out. may use a dropper to get some nice thick drips. figured its going to be real messy back there, and add the spare ski and straps on top. might get some small rope and use that instead of the PE.
Then its onto the base. Got some awesome help from TRM so cant wait to start it.
enough blah blah blah, onto the pics!
Drivers door. Since it bothers me that the interior would be hidden and i did some weathering inside and i like it, im going to leave the door off and on the side of the aerosan. maybe looking like it broke. theres some PE hinges, maybe ill bend them up.
Shroud close up w/engine
Ski Fluid lines, and leak
Small update:
Started the base.
also, just had a lil oopsie. put in a window and the glue spurted out. and its glossy. so i tried to get it off with oil thinner cause it doesnt seem to eat the acrylic. and it just spread it so theres this big gloss patch. so i sprayed some dullcote to match what i did before and it made the paint all crackly, and didnt realize i got it on the propeller. so i panicked and got a q-tip to wipe it off propeller, and it took the paint off but it actually looks like real weathered wood now. so it kinda worked out. however i now have a big patch of crackle paint. it doesnt look terrible cause the thing is weathered and itll be on the back of the diarama but boo. so i added some wash, and did some other magic and it doesnt look as bad now.
boo boo. i like the propeller better now. more layers of color. worked out. crackly, not so much...
after adding wash, looks better. doesnt seem as out of place.
and the base. going to age wood, and add earth and snow and all that jazz. this is just the clay base and bare wood fence. also first time doing a base. this thing is soooo fragile i have to
Small Update:
Got some more of the base done. Laid down the dirt and painted the fence. Still going to do more to fence, just not 100% sure of what yet. next is snow, just waiting for the precision snow to make its way. came out pretty good so far. like the contrast of mud colors. looks pretty real.
Small update:
Got some of the AMMO stuff in.
Fuel stains on front fuel tank...
Fuel/grime stains on back by engine...
Added pigments to the base mud (Russian Earth) to make it darker/more realistic color. Pretty happy with it, first time using pigments. I also feathered the edge where the snow will hit.
so im done with touching the aerosan. im pretty happy with it. just have the base left. wooop
OK here's the final pics. Its done done. I'm happy with it. I know i could do more to the base but I'm ready to hit the Mp4 hard, so i can get to this Soviet tractor i just got (woo).
Hope you all enjoy. It was a blast to build. For my first weathering and base I'm happy. With more models will come more experience. I've learned a ton.
Also i would like to thank TRM. He has answered countless questions for me. I don't know why he still talks to me or hasn't blocked me but I'm very thankful to have that kind of help instantly. And thanks to everyone else for the positive comments.
