Hi again. Sad to see the My Hobby Info forum go, but very glad to see a lot of the same gang over here. I started this build 1st week of July. The goal is to finish it in the next 5 weeks to keep me on task and finish this sucker. I'm up to my eyeballs with shelf queens So here is where I am with it now. Thanks for looking. Cheers #57

Well she needs more sanding, a tiny bit of filling and more priming but she's definitely a wingy thing now. The cowl and wings might be slightly askew because they're just dry-fitted, but overall pretty great fit on the kit. I'm enjoying the change of scenery with building a plane but d@mn it am I ever bad at fuselage seams. I promised myself "no more building kits with two part gun barrels", so what do I do? Build a plane, which is like a gun barrel seam on steroids. Cheers #57

Looking good... it is starting to look like a plane now. I noticed two tones of grey... did it come that way in the box?

It all came out of the box one colour. I jumped the gun and primed the fuselage early because I was going crazy wondering if the fuselage seam was done right. Any other difference between the grey's is probably just a lighting trick.
Take care,

Making some slow progress. The cowl is out in the garage which is a shame because it probably turned out nicer then the rest of the airframe. So far just a base of Alclad Aluminium and some Tamiya IJN Grey for the fabric control surfaces. I plan on masking off some panels on the underside to paint in different shades. For a first bare metal finish I'd give it a "B". Definitely room for improvement. I finally decided on markings. I thought if the finish on the topside came out perfect I'd go with option 2. If it was bad I'd go with option 1. In the end I'm going with option 1 because I just like it better. Thanks for looking. #57

Well still managed to get some errant spray despite my crazy over masking. Luckily it'll be covered up by the green camo to come. The white border on the hinomaru on the other side needs a little touch up and I'm worried that gunze paint with brush paint about as good as tamiya . Maybe re-mask and spray? Not really impressed by Montex Masks. Left a TON of adhesive residue and compared to cheapy painters low tack tape the lines weren't as sharp. I may make my own masks to finish the job. #57

Still chipping away at her. Sorry for the low quality pic, got pretty lazy about getting out the camera last night. The anti-glare looks wonky but I swear it's ok. It's a strange optical illusion because there is some masking going on under there. Also the exhaust looks like copper in the photo, but rust in person. Weird. I'm going to start weathering in the next couple days. I tried to initially chip it with the hairspray method, but wasn't happy with the result so repainted it. I'll go over it again with paint and pencil for wear. Thanks for looking. I'll try to get some better photos soon. Cheers #57

Starting to get a whiff of the finish line. Got myself all cross-eyed with a small fine brush and aluminium paint the past couple nights. I finished the propeller and the canopy is masked but not painted yet. Hopefully tomorrow I'll put my last clear on it and be able to take out the tape covering the cockpit and see how that held up. I expect touch ups inside . I've REALLY enjoyed the change of scenery for this build (first prop plane since in more then 20 years), but I'm looking forward to getting back to something with tracks. Cheers #57

Well I'm calling this one done. 2nd Build of 2014 and 1st I'm not embarrassed of. It's not 100% accurate I'm sure, but I'm pretty happy with it. There's definitely things I'd do different 2nd time around but good learning experience. Thanks for everyone that gave compliments or constructive criticism and for the site for running the Wingy thing challenge. I don't think I would have got out of my armoured comfort zone to try this out without it. Cheers #57

@leon. I used stretched sprue and super glue. I initially tried fishing monofilament but no luck. I just cut a 4" piece of sprue, heat the middle over a tea candle and when the middle starts to sweat pull the ends apart in a nice fluid motion. It's easier then it sounds. After a couple cracks you can get a hair thin piece about 2 feet long (or more). The one thing to remember is after the pull, hold the ends apart for 30 seconds or so while the hot plastic cools and the strand should stay pretty straight. TRM. If you want it in M-O-M I'd be honoured. @tobi. Good point on the exhaust. I kind of chickened out on adding any because I was happy with where it was at and I've ruined more then a few kits going a bridge too far. I'll read up on techniques for the next one. Thanks for the comments Cheers #57
