They say that he was in my country area in the search for that Decebal, a barbarian king (lovely this recent release of Art Girona: www.art-girona.com/serie-historical/2809-decebalus-the-brave-king-of-dacia-87-106-ac.html), who had stated on quite a lot of trouble to the emperor Traian. Annoyed and somehow bored (combination not recommended to the serious modelist after midnight), I got this bust from Linjo and started some steps: a traditional Vallejo blackprimer, some colors on the face (moustache should be arranged) and on lorica, my new colors of this great set of Scale75 (http://www.scale75.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=157). Everything with acrylics and brushes. No aerograph due to health problems! A good week to everybody!

Yep, very well and good looking Bust! Hell of a sculpt, has a little bit of fantasy in my eyes, looks a bit like mistery... The fleshcolour is well done, not so dark, fits perfect with the surrounding colours. The metallic parts: top! They are real metallics, not NMM? Everytime I see historical figures I want to paint them myself instead of all those Monsters and Mayhem...

Thank you, my friends, for your kind interest! It's just the beginning. The bust is similar with one recent launched by Nuts Planet. Frank, I'll recommend you if you want to attack something similar. About the face, still to work, but the base is relatively ok. Just look here to one amazing demonstration on Nuts Planet bust (http://www.puttyandpaint.com/projects/4778), so I'm still far away of such level. The metallic sets form Scale75 are very good, it's indeed true metal, I'll use this bust to test them. Andy, I'll catch you soon, so watch out!

Hell yes, the Scale75 colours!! I have them on my buying list, have read only positive comments on them. As far as the working levels go: Many years ago I saw the works of Bill Horan and Doug Cohen, Yasushi Nirasawa and Takayuki Takeya. Their art was mindblowing. Was AND is of cause! Seeing this didn´t stop me from beginning to sculpt on my own and going through several deserts of pain I reached the level I am now satisfied with. So NEVER stop working, painting and sculpting. The every day work on these subjects will help you to reach goals of your own. And this bust here looks very promising and so count me in. Will follow!

There's the remains of a tombstone from Birdoswold in Cumbria recording a child called Decibalus; the garrison of the fort was Cohors I Aelia Dacorum ("Hadrian's Own First Cohort of Dacians"). They seem to have retained their Dacian heritage for quite some time after the majority of personnel would have been recruited locally; a building inscription of the early third century AD has an image of a traditional curved Dacian sword, nearly a hundred years after the unit became the garrison. Given there were half-a-dozen British auxiliary cohorts in Dacia it's possible we swapped ancestors at some point... Cheers, M

As I wasn't very satisfied with the eyes, I came back and try to make them again. Still problems with the armour, it' a little difificult to find the good combination with Scale 75 even the colours are great!

I think the eyes look great! I am with you about painting the armor as I find it difficult to paint steel so I try to paint in different tones.

Andy, Bill, my warm thanks! Frank, I used to work with Vallejo acryllics and due to a good friend advice I had succeeded to have some success. My receipe was based on combination of Black, Natural Steel, lights with Silver, extreme lights Metal Medium. But the Scale 75 metallic set has other names and the colours are not the same (for example, the Heavy Metal from Scale 75 is not similar with Natural Steel form Vallejo). But after some tests, I'll know how to manage, don't worry. Sorry for my poor English, I hope to make somehow clear the nature of my problems. Cheers! Nicolae

Nicolae, don´t worry about your English! It is all understandable the way it is used to be (hey, if someone has to worry about the spelling, it is me, too!) And yes, I see the problem. I paint with Vallejo, too but want to use the Scale75 paints because they are so cool. And yes, every brand takes new names for their different colours so it is a bit painfull to mix them...

I would like to say that it all comes together in harmony. The colours are good and the shades and lights you have done so far are nice. OK, there can be more, but remember: You are in between the working flow so let in go with patience! For the hoods lightning and shading I would use more light layers of the acrylic paint you use. When you darken and lighten it, do not overuse black or white, instead of them use some darker or lighter brown tones for this kind of work.

Thank you, guys! Frank, very appreciated your commentaries. You have right and I know the very important detail about (non)adding Black and White. The hood received only a base, I intend to work with some Blue nuances added to my colour base for the shadows (which is made by Black Leather from Scale 75 and Burnt Cadmium from Vallejo, in one layer I put only a little black to see how's working). For the lights I have some Orange Brown(Vallejo)or Orange Leather (Scale75), I'll see when the moment comes and, eventually, I'll choose another colour. As I have over 150 bottles (Vallejo most of them, but also Scale75 or Agama), I have where to choose. Cheers! Nicolae

Choice of colour sounds good. I am very curious how many layers you will, hmm, "lay".

A really good method for SEEING where the lights and shadows have to go is to place a light source direct central over the figure. You see exactly where light and shadows go (the so-called "overhead lightning") and depending on the range of the light source you can define it more clearly.
