Taking a step back in time from my recent venture into modern armor with the excellent Meng T-90A . A few steps back in the mold quality also . While there is limited flash it certainly does not hold up when compared to the newer releases . I'm probably spoiled by the high precision of the new Meng and Trumpeter kits . But then again this kit was 1/3 the price of the T-90A .This kit came with the vinyl tracks and since all of the drive train is exposed I opted for a replacement with Trumpeter workable tracks .
Here's the kit box.
Top view
A little history . Armed with a Rheinmetal 128 mm L/61 Kanone , two of these vehicles were built on the chassis that was left over from Henschel's submission for the canceled VK30.01 heavy tank program .Two prototypes were built and in service from 1942 -43 . The vehicles were named Max and Moritz .Moritz had two drivers compartments built up on the front hull but the right one was not used . Max had the drivers compartment on the left side only and that is the vehicle of this kit . Both vehicles saw service with 521 Panzerjaeger Abteil in 1942 on the Eastern Front. One vehicle was destroyed (Moritz), the other (Max) was captured at Stalingrad in January 1943 with 22 tank kill marks on the gun barrel and is now on display in Russia at the Kubinka tank museum .
Some pics of Max with her kill marks .
Sturer Emil on display at Kubinka tank museum .
A couple of pics of Sturer Emil Moritz with the dual drivers compartments .
This is the Trumpeter track links I'm using to replace the vinyl tracks .
And just for fun and giggles I picked up this p.e. set . Gotta have some bling as none is provided in the kit .
I haven't decided on an overall vehicle color . The instructions show the vehicle in over all gray and that's the color on the tank at Kubinka but there may room for interpretation from that . I might go for some thing more interesting .

Should be a fun one to watch you bring alive Carl, looking forward to it! You're right about the older mold quality but it's in good hands, I've no doubt about that.

GREAT! Can't wait to see this in action! Here is my mine from a few years back: Looking back, it was my favorite build and I do want to build it again learning from how things went the first time. Next time it will sport some indy links, soften up the colors in the fighting area and cut down the kill marks so they do not circle the entire barrel. I could do this with the existing model but what fun would THAT be! LOL So, let's see it Carl! Jeff

Assembled and sprayed primer on the 2 piece plastic gun barrel and it looks usable . I used AV primer for the first time and I'm not impressed .I used Tamiya X20A thinner . Doesn't stick very well . Maybe it needs to cure longer .

Well, alright... a start! So, what else can be used instead of Tamiya thinner? Is water an option?
Yeah the price is right on this kit (think I paid 17 for mine) so right that I added an RB muzzle and barrel. SO many detail items inside the fighting compartment to keep anyone happy.

Jeff I looked at a video made by Scratchmod ,that was sent my way , and it looks like I'm doing a few things wrong when applying this primer .I found that Valejo makes an airbrush thinner so I'll order that and lower the psi too 10 to 15 psi and see how it goes .
Rick , and who knows what the camo pattern colors really where ? Maybe brown over gray ? Thanks for the pic .

I use Vallejo primer all the times now... like you said I thin it a bit with thinner and it works great. Remember my DAK 232? LOL
Wish you were here with us at ArmorCon! One day we have to figure out to drag you out of your dungeon...

There's a jig provided with the VK 30001 tracks . Lay the links in it and insert the pins . The track pins on the sprue . Tracks are workable but be easy when handling them as the pins do not insert very far into the adjacent links .

Hi Carl .. I think when I get to this one I might do it Grey and Green just because if we do it in brown ,someone will come along and say that it was too late for the early war Grey -Brown pattern.. could be one of the African colors.. grey-green maybe??
