Looks very good Guy.
I try to do the eyes early on my paint jobs, too.

Thanks for your replies guys, today I have a couple of hours to slap on some more oils. I didn't do anything to the bust the past days. I had to reorganize the house but now everything looks very ZEN again, which is ideal for painting and concentrating on the project.
An update will follow soon.
Best regards ! AG.

Finally I sniffed the smell of oils and mineral spirits today ! One issue...my brushes are a disaster ! I have got to buy new ones. That's why I still have to finish the eyes by the way. I went for some medium flesh tones with oils (mixtures of flaked white, yellow ocre, flesh ocre, burnt sienna, burnt umber, cadmium red,and with addition of ultramarine blue for the medium shadows). The leather was basepainted with Humbrol enamel. I hope you like this ugly mucker so far ! More coming up ! Best regards ! AG.

Thanks fellas, today I worked hard en with no mercy LOL ! I gave the metal a good lamp black oil wash, and the leather was given a first layer of thick oil paint and dabbed with a stiff brush to create a worn leathery texture. The flesh tones were also slightly reworked, but I still have to generate more contrasts. I washed away yesterday's paint on the eyes to redo them and guess what (?!), the remaining grey blue tones of the irises look quite good so I decided to give the eyes a Humbrol gloss varnish. I'll finish them once I have new brushes. Best regards !AG.

Fantastic effort so far mate!! Pity about having to touch up the eyes again but they are looking fine now. For some extra depth around the beard try some heavily diluted Prussian blue that you used for Winny! Hope you are on the mend mate, I'm still not quite there yet...I might not try your oil and spirits recipe to achieve a faster recovery though lol!!

Guy, with or without good brushes you already did a big step forward. I like very much what I see, the flesh tones looks very well, even the face isn't finished yet. The leather effect of your surcoat is for me excellent, can't wait to see the next steps (historically speaking, I have some doubts if this surcoat was made from leather or wool, I don't know many details). Very curious how you'll treat the chainmail shirt. All in all, is more and more convincing. Cheers, Nicolae

Hey Shay, health's moreless ok now I think but I'm still on heavy medication (cortisone) for about 8 days. I still have to start the beard works but I keep your tip in mind fella.
nicusi, I look forward to the next steps too my friend, as this is the first time I will paint worn leather, I have a strategy in my mind but I'm not sure it will work, we'll see... I'm not familiar with medieval stuff and I don't know if leather was used but I think it's possible. I know one thing, painting figures is addictive !
Andy, nothing can beat a beret, the shell is too difficult to wear and keeping it balanced while painting gives me hard times. The German helmet is not that popular in our region, maybe it's time to buy a new, flashy beret LOL !
T, the skin tones are not too difficult but finding the right depth in folds isn't exactly a piece of cake. I hope I make it work but I'm having a great time and to be honest painting figures gives me great satisfaction ! And yes, get your @** in gear, we need firefighters !

Hang in there buddy. I have been having some health issues as all of my joints are really hurting especially the hips and ankles. Finally got to see my doctor this morning and had blood drawn. We are clueless... hopefully we will find out why I am dealing with this.
Hope you feel better soon... German helmet not popular in your region? Just send it over here... we Americans love them! LOL

Oops Andyman, that's odd, ankles and hips hurting...it's good that the doctor took your blood for examination, he'll soon find out what's wrong then. Today I managed to give the helmet a bit of attention. Not a big deal really, it's a metal one... Best regards ! AG.

Thank you guys ! Newsflash...last Sunday I've made a smack on the back of my head, and since then I have this terrible headache. This will slow things up. Nevertheless, just before that happened I gave the warrior his beard, it's not finished but it's growing LOL. Next to do besides finishing the beard, is the hair. Best regards ! AG.

You set the bar very high each time ....I remember your Normandy buildings elsewhere and at the time I thought this guy Guy is extremely talented! Dioramas, AV's, busts....respect my old friend!! Thanks T, the skin tones still need some tuning, the beard too, there's still a lot to do. Andyman, you'd look cool with a beard...and a beret ! Shayfella, you're way too kind ! I was a busy modeller in those days, now I'm a lot more relaxed and I'm having the time of my life slowing things down. The Normandy houses, man that's a story I'll tell you about on a show in the future... Today I brushed, stippled and fiddled oils on the leather. Best regards ! AG.

Guy, this is a fantastic work, as usual from you. One of the best Busts Andrea has produced, the face is full of character, battle worn, sad and full of life. Some of your pics look like taken from a real person (I mean the bust, fellas, not the Ger-man, harhar!) and I always wonder how you manage to get the colour layers so real smooth (especially in the flesh areas). Maybe a reason why I only paint small scale (have no airbrush, but I guess this is only a matter of time). I am waiting with patience for your detail work, this will be another gem here!

Frank, indeed, this is such a brilliant sculpt, the eyes are full of drama, trauma, shock, name it and it's there, even compassion, truly remarkable ! I try to brush on very thin layers of oil paint, and while I blend the different tones I try to take away the excess of paint too so I keep the surface smooth. For this head I didn't thin down my oils (Winston's head was painted with transparent thinned down layers of oil paint). Now leather's totally new to me to paint, I hope to manage it by stippling and dabbing, washing and partiallly removing paint. On the net I found some nice tutorials from experienced figurists. As you can see still a lot of work... I'm not sure how I will finish the collar of our battled fella, dirty white or also leather ?

Outstanding job, as always, Guy.
I'd go for dirty white, just to add some contrast.

Correct Luigi, that makes sense because the chain mail was a one piece protection.
