We all know that there are several compounds on the market, like Aves, Magic Sculpt, Miliput and several more. But: Did anyone of you work with a semitransparent/transparent sculpting compound?? Do this EXIST?? Any ideas?

That's a new one on me!! Good question Frank! Might have to do a deeper search myself as well soon and see what I can dig up!

Sculpey used to make a transparent clay about like plasticine/plastilene but I can't seem to find it online now, though mention of a clear liquid Sculpey abounds. Not sure what that is. From what I remember, the old transparent clay was pretty clear, especially when thin. Not like the clear parts of a model kit but very translucent with some detail visible, and light would illuminate the whole substance like frosted glass sculptures. I don't know what became of it when fired in terms of transparency. Sculpey is oil based and never dries, but I did actually use it to fill gaps on some of my childhood model kits, and looking at them now it's actually still there and cleanly painted just as it once was. I don't know the lifespan of it, but it's in excess of ten years if not permanent.
In any case, a clear oil based sculpting compound did once exist. I don't know why I can't find it now. Hopefully it was not found to be horrifically toxic...

That would be indeed freaky to say the least...a see through compound!! Definitely a lot of avenues it could be used for but I think it would be difficult in detailing anything...but then again, those crazy guys who sculpt ice with chainsaws don't seem to have a problem!!

Guys, first thanks for your input! I am on the lookout for such stuff since years and never found anything! The only thing which came near to it was a two compound epoxy cement which is clear and stayed clear. But you cannot sculpt it... When I think what I could do with something sculptable, I go crazy. The only possibility to do so is to sculpt and make castings in clear resin but that is another story!

As Delta mentioned, the only translucent (not clear, just translucent) sculptable compound of which I am aware is a particular type of Sculpty baking clay for use with making doll faces. It's a skin-tone polymer baking clay which allows light passage through about the first 2mm of thickness. It's not meant to be painted. Instead it's supposed to allow a sort of illuminated quality to the large-scale faces common in doll making.
As far as sculpting mediums which are not two-part based, Sculpty Firm (grey-comes in a 850gram box) is wonderful stuff and is easy to work with. The primary problem with polymer baking clays is that it's very easy to damage one section of uncured clay when working on an adjacent section. But the infinite work time can be a huge advantage.
