I stopped building airplanes many years ago mostly due to the difficulty in providing a good level of cockpit detail. How the hell to you and Doogs paint your interiors so cleanly? ?? Patience, eye strain, and lots of swearing? Lol I don't know honestly. It really helps when the kit gives you something good to work with. The raised detail is just right. Proud enough to easily pick out with some paint.

In all seriousness, it helps a lot to have a kit as good as the Trumpy A-6 to play with. As Jimmy says, the raised detail does a good bit of the work by just existing. For individual buttons and such, I find Vallejo Model Color works really well - it doesn't get all flow-happy so you can apply it precisely. I used a toothpick and an old airbrush needle for mine.
And it's really hard to screw up the True Details seats. They are simply astonishing.

Vallejo is pretty much the holy grail of brush painting in my experience. That's what I used here as well. And the old airbrush needle works great. And I'll again echo the sentiments on the True Details seats....they are wow wow wowzers good.

Pit's looking the business there Jimmy! Nice to see you haven't forgotten about this lonely bird with all the other stuff you've got running on the bench.

Bill, yes, I couldn't let her get too lonely. Besides it's nice to work on something with the only pressure being meeting my own standards. Wonderful job on this... now to begin the search for my own Intruder. I am seriously running out f room to store these models. :\ Every self respecting stash deserves an Intruder. I tell you this kit is really nice, but if big isn't your thing there are kits in other scales

Calling the cockpit done. Added a dark grey enamel wash with RLM 66. Hit some areas with a light dry-brushing (don't roll your eyes...still a valid technique ). Added the IP decal and backed it with some black paint. IP and coaming are not attached as it looks like I can add them after the fuselage is closed, so I'm minimizing the risk of damaging them with my clutzy nature. Bang seat stencils are from the AOA set and initial impressions of those decals is positive. Can't wait to use them on the main body. I've also been working on the landing gear and the nose bay. I like the provided metal struts, but they have seams that prove to be a PITA to remove. Apparently I deleted the in progress pics showing the PE embellishments on the gear legs. Mostly bolts and some pieces in the bay itself. Not anything I imagine anyone would notice, but it broke my PE fear and I like it (Didn't realize I missed focus on the strut, so I'll get better pics) Need to handle the arrestor hook bay and then I can close the fuselage...which looks like it will go together nicely.

Ok, so I put the PE in the arrestor hook bay. Easy enough. So that meant I could close up the fuselage. It won't be any more difficult to paint installed than not. Fuselage join was tight. It just barely closes up. There's going to be some serious cleanup...which I'll have a weird method for (you'll see later). For whatever reason the rivet lines approaching the apex of the fuselage get really soft. I marked the lines so I could see them with a bronze sharpie and used a push pin to deepen them out. I like this because unlike and old airbrush needle it doesn't push plastic upward creating a crest around the outside of the hole. Naturally I'll have to touch these up after seam cleanup but if I hadn't enhanced them here they would have been much harder to see later. This area will be the real pain to clean up without obliterating stuff. (More on that when I work on it). The scheme on the Superscale sheet shows the airbrakes are not theperforated style. The A-6E kit apparently has the closed off pieces, but for the life of me I couldn't find them in this kit, so the holes had to be filled. I tried styrene plugs which didn't work all that well mostly...so I went then to Bondo and CA. The hold to the light test says they are good, but primer will tell the true tell. Of course AOA is coming out with a new sheet...so I'll likely drop the Superscale...provided I can do an A with the filled in brakes. Thing are really ugly now, but they'll be ok.

Interesting approach up top with the rivet lines! I've been figuring on the E that it's got a flat enough spine that I'll be destroying many of those shallow rivets anyway, so I'm just planning to use tape and a rivet wheel to restore them (the RB Productions mini rivet wheel is actually rather easy to more or less freehand)
As for the airbrakes...yeah the E has the solid parts, even though there are more than a few examples of Es with perforated brakes. Silly of Trumpeter not to include both with each variant.

I've got one rivet wheel but it's for 1/48 so the spacing is short. I really need to get one for 1/32. This is a pretty tedious (and not perfecy) way to do it.

Nice trick on the rivet lines, have to file that one away for future use, never know when something like that could come in handy.

Not a terribly exciting update, but an update nonetheless. I did find a pic of the gear with the PE before paint, for an idea of what that added. (Complete - will be in the next update). It's been terribly slow going with seam cleanup. The top of the fuselage was a lot of work with CA and Bondo. I sprayed "check it" primer four times before finally getting rid of all the problems. This has consumed the large part of the work on this one for a while. Also, I sprayed behind the intakes, so I can paint there before fitting them. I've also spent some time filling in molded detail that I've been informed should only be present on the A-6E and Tram...these included some vent holes etc. Finally, I did some work on the canopy. I really don't think painting the inteior frame color from the outside is "doable" in 1/32. You can do it, but IMO it looks bad. So, I used an Eduard mask set to mask off the inside of the canopy and sprayed the interior color. This color is entirely on the inside of the pieces and looks much better than the alternative. Well worth the effort

The canopy is looking lovely, but I'm a bit surprised that you unmasked it since it still needs to become gray. Third mask set?
Looking forward to getting my big Intruder back up and going again soon. Probably in a month or so the way the weather is going.

Wait. Is the interior frame grey? The couple pics I checked looked black...
The exterior color hasn't been painted yet. Still need to mask and do that.
Hopefully you can get your back on the bench soon.

I suppose one of the downsides of working in the larger scale is that the tedious stuff like seam filling becomes an even larger (and more time-consuming!) task. Good to see you're able to get some progress in on this one again Jimmy.

Marking options for the A-6 have changed a bit. AOA recently announced a new comprehensive set of decals for the 1/32 kit. I reached out to Steve Belanger at AOA and got my hands on a sample to review for SAMI. They came in today and boy am I impressed. Several sheets of reference for each specific airframe (15 in total), 4 full size sheets of decals including unit and national markings as well as a full set of stencils. I've yet to decide which aircraft I'm going with. More on that later. Big thanks to Steve and AOA. Can't wait to use these.
