Solid work on the planking Todd, that template certainly is getting a workout! How many guns on this baby?

Thanks guys! I seemed to have missed you in here a couple months back! Finally! Well it's been about 2 months since I updated the thread. I had to bang out a few smaller projects along the way while continuing the secondary planking of the hull. But now, the planking is done! Since the planking was completed, it was time to follow the instruction and mask off the color banding of the hull. The first step was the upper section needed to be painted black. Just below the black band, there will be a section of natural wood, followed by red, or in my case a deeper red oxide color (I just like it), followed by the lower hull being white. I think the bottle of water gives a good sense of the 1/84 scaling of this ship! The oxide boot striping has been painted on both sides. Time to add the black whale boards next which will straddle the boot stripe and then onto adding the galleries to the stern! Thanks for stopping in!!

Shes got a really nice smooth bottom!!! Looks great sofar. Next year if the Mayflower comes to town for haul out, you have to come by and see how the guys at the local shipyard re-plank and cork her up. QUITE a sight!

That's going to make someone a real nice bathtub toy! Even better would be a jacuzzi. You could turn the bubbles on and pretend you're in a major storm.

And then watch all of the planks come undone due to the heat/humidity! That might not be a bad way to create a wreck...but we shouldn't be giving him any ideas.

I have been to Todd's place and I am positive he doesn't have a jacuzzi. But no worries I will just give him a very big bowl of baked beans it will do the trick!

Wow, I am catching up on this after seeing it updated. Quite tedious it seems, but you are banging away nicely. Keep it up, Todd.

Seems I missed a bunch of responses when I set this aside to work on a few things! Sorry for missing you there guys! Your comments are most appreciated! Finally, I had the chance to get back to the wooden ship on the bench! I did manage do do a few other things on the ship such as working on the gallery sections...chopped up a bunch of wood for gun ports (which I am not looking forward to installing) and finally the bow. The bow section was kind of fun. I needed to make the grating which is fitted to the beak of the ship... The provided template showed the basic layout to the grates. Once built, it was only a matter of marking them form the bottom side and a little cutting and sanding. Of course I popped some clear onto these parts to offset the coloring from the stained deck around it. The final result... I am working on the forward bulkhead exterior now. More sanding and a coat of black on it and the beak and the grating will be installed! There is a whole bunch of white metal parts to clean up and paint for the stern...fun fun fun! Thanks for stopping by!

Speaking of a "stained deck", please bear in mind this was the ship's sh1th*use (except for the officers, who used the nice ornate side galleries at the back*). I'm not suggesting any special "weathering" as the pitching of the ship and the bow wave must have taken care of that (and in rough weather maybe acted as a bidet). But do remember the proper accessory for the holes in the plank, a bit of old rope with the ends teased out into a sort of tow, attached to a line with which one could lower it into the sea for the necessary cleansing. The old adage is true: worse things DO happen at sea.
Regards,
M
* A long-maintained naval tradition: on HMS Rodney the sailor's facilities were in the forward part of the ship, and were made of glazed heavy-duty porcelain. The heavy firing of the 16-inch battery during the sinking of the "Bismark" shattered every last item: it must have been a long voyage home... I do hope this doesn't encourage anyone to consider the Trumpeter 1:200th model for an entry in the cutaway group build.

Thank you Martin!! Thank M! Appreciate all the extra info! LOL...one reason today they still call a toilet on a ship a "head". From it;s location on these old timers! I had not planned on weathering this outside maybe faded sails. The purpose of this one to start with was a review build...the fact I enjoy these wooden ships a lot, only makes it a bonus! Moving forward all of the bits and bobs will be added and the kit, as it is designed, actually has a great layout. I assume at the moment, all of the correct eyes and whatnot are included. Thanks G!! You're too kind! You would think by now I would have picked a damn subject I really like and just stick with it!! Not the case!!
