Well since I started the kit I might as well start the thread as well. The kit is the Academy F-86F-30 which I have been dying to build, actually any bare metal aircraft. I Purchased the Eduard PE detail set, True Details Sabre Wheel set and will use the SAC Sabre Landing Gear. I wanted to test out the new Vallejo Metal Colors some more so I started the build with the kit supplied engine. Here is the engine, what fun it was to paint. Went straight from priming with Vallejo Gloss Black and continuing with each colors. Besides the time taken to photograph it took about 30 min from primer to completion. I can't wait to paint this plane... [a href="http://pos timage.org/"] [/a][/div]

Where can we buy them? The guy selling them at the show was, I think, named Angel. What's his website?
Could you describe in just two or three sentences how these are different from Vallejo's standard "White Cap" metallic paints which most of us have already used?

#1 - Distributors will or should have them this month and then it goes out to the shops, if they order them. Angel is the owner of Micro World Games and was the only one to have these paints in Columbus. He basically ran out the second day of us demoing these new colors. #2 - the difference is that these are all acrylic/water based. The white capped colors were alcohol based. These new color work just like the Model Air range of colors. They go on easy, dry fast, no odor and the best part is that they can be masked (when applied correctly. The engine shown above was painted in about 30 minutes, including primer. For best results of course let the primer cure for 24hrs and then apply the paint colors. The longer you let the paints dry and cure the better the finish. I couldn't wait to play with these lol so I didn't wait for drying and curing. This may help, I did this video this week. www.facebook.com/vallejocolors?ref=tn_tnmn

You are making me wish I had stopped by for the demo. The questions that are rolling around in my head.... lots of empty pace for that ...are how durable is the finish? Rock hard like Alclad or fragile like MM Metalizers? Or is it as if it were any other "painted" surface? I'll guess we'll see how i takes decals when you get there. Then how how much does the metal effect change when clear coated. The engine is outstanding.

Are they buffable? Thinnable? What surface prep is needed?

Marc check out the video. Once the paint cures 24-72 hours it's rock hard. In the video I scratched the paint after painting and drying for maybe ten minutes and it only scuffed the paint.
Doogs, they are not buffable but you can apply pigments and buff. I did this at the show. I haven't gotten to that part yet but will do another SBS or Video. Thinning is just like with the Model Air. You can use Vallejo AB Thinner, water and even alcohol/water.They are thin enough that you don't have to thin, but I always thin my paints. A clean smooth surface like you would for painting a model. I have used the colors over bare plastic and had no issues but a Gloss Black primer is best.

Marc I haven't seen much of a change when clear coated with Gloss.

LOL Marc I have been wanting to do a bare metal plane fr years but never wanted to use enamels or other solvent based paints. Now with these I can finally build all those cool birds I have always wanted to build.....Mustangs,Thunderbolts, B25 Sabre's and lots of others.

I'll have to give this stuff a test, then. Definitely have a love/hate relationship with Alclad.

#Intrigued
I like Alclad, but I don't have any objections to something acrylic. Certainly looks good and I trust the reports I'm hearing from you and Todd a lot more than the YouTube reviewers, so I'm absolutely trying these.
Watching with interest.

One think to keep in mind is the application. it's just like with the Primer and Model Air, if you don't apply it right you won't get the best results. I have seen some of those reviews and know what they are doing wrong. It gives a false impression of the product(s) if you don't use it correctly.

Rob, you are a wicked man - never thought I'd be tempted away from soviet armour, but this makes me want to try a bare-metal wingy...oh, my poor wallet
