Almost ready for paint folks. The fuselage is ready. The engine (closed) is ready. And the payload is ready. Next will be a Flat Black coat to preshade then onto the colors. All comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged. Joe

Painting has commenced. It is not pretty but I have been trying to get the cammo scheme right. In the end it is not perfect but I am going to live with it. First steps. Got all the colors on. Had some issue with the masking pulling up the paint in several places but got them on. After letting them dry for a bit I sprayed a misty coat of the base colors mixed with Flat White. Once that had a chance to dry I went back with the original colors to try to give it the look I had seen in the pictures. I am not happy with the process. There has to be an easier way to accomplish what I did. However I am reasonably happy with the final result. Looks a bit harsh but the coming processes should help to tone that down some. I am now calling the painting (fuselage anyway) done. I have other bits and bobs to finish off but the fuselage is painted. All comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged. Joe

Yes I'm an I-Corp Rat! Class of 68. My battalion was located right across Highway One from the Chu Lai airbase (Cherry Hill). Yet I used the far southern end of the runway in DaNang to hook up for CA's out to never-never land. Remember the F104's parked close by, but for the life of me don't remember where the Skyraiders were parked. I did 17 CA's that I remember, but my #2 man says 23. First Sargent says 25. Still most CA's were out of Chu Lai, Ross, and Thien Phouc. Last base camp was Thien Phouc at the base of the Hiep Duc Ridge. I'm old and just don't remember all that well. My A.O. was the Que Son Valley out to the border, and all points north and south from there. gary

In 68, they were parked right across from the Motor Pool and Power Plant( Which is were I lived, 366th TAC Fighter Group Support.) . I remember the F-104's also and plan to paint mine in SEA Camo.... when I get back to it. Sorry.... not trying to Hi-Jack the thread.

I say this to many but...
Thank you to all who sacrificed of yourself so that we can have the lives we have. You are all heros. (I know, I know, but you are to me)

An update. Once the gloss began to fly I decided to keep it going. Same process as with the Kingfisher. Do need to say that the decals are nasty. They shattered and tore very easily. Took a bit to get them on. Weathering will be next. All comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged. Joe

Funny... unlike the other fighter this has very tiny markings! Little timid she is about showing us who she is with? Paint looking good too.

The markings are definitely different from the kingfisher. Bruce glad you like the vids. This update will start off with a bit of dry brushing to tone down the decals a bit. Once done I moved on to a bit of staining. I wanted to give it a bit of life but not to overdo the effect. My focus was on the nose with just a bit of staining on the wing and main body of the fuselage. Just a few close ups of the nose. With this to this point now I can move on to adding some of the little detail parts not yet attached. All comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged. Joe

Funny... unlike the other fighter this has very tiny markings! Little timid she is about showing us who she is with? Paint looking good too. Andy; The Skyraider was a true multi role plane. A strike aircraft, a SOAR aircraft, etc. Some carried no makings to speak of (SOG birds), and some looked like bill boards! If I remember right the "TT" on the tail says that it's an SOAR out of DaNang (correct me if I'm wrong). Anytime you saw letter "T" on the tail, you knew it was a special op plane. Think there was one other code on the tail used by special op's. One of these days I'm doing a SOG Skyraider operating west of the rubber plantations (A strike aircraft with zero markings for the most part). It'll be 1/72 to go with a C123, and a Farmgate B26. gary

70% of our strikes came out of DaNang, but no Skyraiders. Weird! Mostly A4's and F4's, but after the bombing halt we started to get A6's (we called them dump trucks). Down at Chu Lai everything seemed to head due north. I've had strikes within twenty miles of the place, and they came out of DaNang! On the otherside of Quang Nghai, I've got them out of Pleiku. Makes no sense. Way out west, and looking over the border; our big friends from Guam came almost daily. gary

Many many thanks to all. Gary I never grow tired of reading the tidbits you post. Makes me remember why I want to do what I do. Joe just boring memories anymore, but the Skyraider was always one of my all time favorites. It's good to see a plane from RVN. Most would love to forget them. I myself would rather build WWII stuff as I've already seen too many of them. Yet I have zero interest in new stuff. (think it's the low visibility scheme) My big urge right now is a big scale P26 in rainbow colors. gary
