A multi-part series on the techniques, paints, and challenges in painting a 1/12th scale Pirate bust from Heroes and Villians Miniatures. The bust is first primed with Krylon Ultra-Flat Camoflage (Black/Brown) straight from the can. This is a very fine grain primer and is a excellent choice for all types of modeling projects. Letting the primer dry for about an hour, the eyes are blocked in with a 50/50 mix of Andrea XNAC45 Pinky Flesh and Vallejo 957 White. Two thin coats were used. When the 'whites' of the eyes have dried Andrea XNAC02 Flat Black is used to define the pupils. The black was barely thinned as I wanted to maintain control in this delicate step. Step 2. Vallejo Cork Brown 843 was mixed with just a bit of Vallejo White 951 and painted inside the black iris leaving just a ring of the black. Detail shot before clean-up. The pupils are carefully added using Andrea black XNAC02. I always turn the figure upside down to paint the right eye details. I'm right handed and the nose would be in the way (do the opposite if you are left handed!) to easily do this. Vallejo Dark Red 946 is heavily thinned and the excess water is removed by touching the brush to a tissue. This color is added to the tear duct area. Andrea Pinky Flesh XNAC45 is also thinned and painted on top of the lower eyelid. When dry a VERY thinned Vallejo smoke was washed over both eyes to slightly tone down the colors. A 'catch-light' was added with the Vallejo white and again, when dry, a thin layer of gloss varnish was added for a bit more 'pop'! MORE TOMORROW!Dave www.lastcavalry.com

This is outstanding Dave! Thank you for taking the time to put together the SBS on this! It's amazing to see how such a complex look can be obtained from a relatively easy procedure!! Can't wait for the next installment!! Heading out to pick up some snacks for the next round!!

The process of blocking in the face colors continues with the base Andrea #5, #2, and Vallejo Beige Red 804 used for the medium highlights. The face still looks very rough and soon the transistional tones will begin to smooth the blocking. Close up of the blocking process. Hundreds of very thin layers of color will be applied to create the desired contrasts. More soon!

Exactly what I have hoped for! The painting of the eyes is very informative written! But my intend are the flesh tones. Interesting, how you block out the lights and shadows and I am very curious how you will soften the transitions of the colours here and make a possible beard area (5 o clock shadow) and how to shade it. I will be sitting here with hungry eyes!

More very thin layers of paint are applied to begin the back and forth process of highlight and shadow transistions. Vallejo Rose Brown 803 was added to the cheeks, Andrea color #6 into the temple, tip of the nose, and hollows of the cheeks, and Vallejo Flat Flesh 955 added to the bridge of the nose, nostrils, chin, and top of the cheeks just below the eye bags. Slowly the face begins to take shape and the harsh contrasts are smoothing out. More and more layers of VERY thin layers are applied and the lower lip and been blocked in with a mix of Vallejo Dark Red 946 and Flat Flesh. Andrea #6 in more thin layers... Back and forth between shadows and highlights.

Jumping ahead before I completed the blending of the facial tones, I decided to create a 5 o'clock shadow on the pirate. Mixing 80% Vallejo Beige Red 804 with 20% Andrea Blue #1 it is then diluted with a LOT of water like a wash. This thin mix is then stippled on using an old brush as this process is rough on the bristles. Many thin layers are dabbed in to achieve the desired effect. More face blending for smoother transitions soon!

A bit more progress... Eyebrows have been added, dirt and sweat marks on the cheeks and temples using Vallejo Smoke 939 and Gloss Varnish, with the painting of the torso just starting. The neck rag was painted with the Andrea White Paint set. Vallejo Rose Brown 803 has a first layer applied to the tops of the shoulders. A long way to go still!! Time to finish up the ears!

Great topic and a very useful SBS for guys like me who want to give it a try with acrylics in the future. I'm an oil painterizer but acrylics have my attention too.

The head scarf was base painted with Vallejo Dark Red 946 and Pale Sand 837. The pattern was taken from a 17th century textile and using the same colors with more Pale Sand added. All that hard work will be covered by the tricorn! The first tattoo has been added. The painting of the torso was done using the same Andrea colors as the face while omitting the lighter tones. Sweat effects are Vallejo Smoke 939. I have decided to change the color of his jacket... More soon! www.lastcavalry.com

The tattered jacket was base coated with color #5 from the Andrea Black paint set, then shaded and highlighted with the other colors from this set. They were all stippled on to create a heavy cloth effect. The lace was first painted Flat Black and then the pattern was carefully painted with Vallejo London Grey 836, highlighted by adding white and then shadowed with black. Finally, a thin coat of Vallejo satin varnish was applied to the lace. Buttons are painted with Ammo of Mig Polished Metal 192 and shadowed by adding black. www.lastcavalry.com

Can't believe I missed out on this! One of the best informative guides I have seen using acrylics on any forum. I really can't get over how subtly you blend all of your colours together. This has been bookmarked, thankyou so much for sharing your techniques.. Cheers, Shay
