I've already posted pictures of Carl, the Dockside work-bot, here: modelerssocialclub.proboards.com/thread/10457/remember-robotech-kits-revellI'm going to combine all the main diorama elements on this single thread. The hover-boat is inspired by Ian McQue's marvelous artwork. And Carl, is entirely my own design. Nasty old kit!Nasty kit meets nasty scroll saw and belt sander!
Lots of windows, so full interior is important. The Boat and The Bot. All further posts on this dio will be placed on this thread. Thanks for watching! John

Thanks for stopping by! Enough snow to cancel school and keep the whole family inside all day. I used the time for a bit of model building! My favorite diorama scenic-cover/glue/super-useful/most-ever thingy! It's glue! It's ground cover! It's black! It's a tar joint between panels!
As much as I like the boats drawn by Ian McQue, his wheelhouses are too simple, not enough tech given the fact that's it's a hovering ship. If it hovers, I'm pretty sure there would be at least a few TV screens, for the rugby match if nothing else! Captain Kirk sits here!
Not going to use this figure. But he's good as a place holder. The leather chair is terribly out of place in the cramped cabin. But I think I'm going to include it nonetheless. It gives the interior a more "homey" feeling.
Another day on the inside and I should be able to close it up. John

Your interior work is fantastic!! Definitely keep the leather chair, it's not very scifi but looks so damn cosy in there. All you need is a coffee machine to complient his sitting space! No more gaps is a brilliant product, I have used it many times in the past. As an interior decorator I have seen my fair share lol! Ideal especially for dioramas because it stays flexible throughout its lifetime. Interested to see how the rest of this takes shape John! Shay

A few days at work, a few days at home. Added and painted a riprap sea barrier. I'm planning to try more water effects since my last attempt turned out pretty well.

Good one John, that's a realistic sea barrier with that green algae !
And the leather chair is something you'd never expect to see in that wheelhouse, so that's a superb touch !

More fun with water on the horizon, nice! Should give you a good chance to show some gently breaking waves or similar on that riprap. Good choice of rocks and variety...all it will need is a couple of bits of plastic flotsam/debris lodged in a couple of places and you'll have it set.

Moving forward after the holiday. The two uprights will hold the hover-boat and the catwalk will run along the side of the hull.
Fun with barnacles.
Adding stains and oil to the work area.
The windows and the ceiling of the boat are installed. The interior is finished. It still needs the roof and detail added to the exterior prior to painting. I was also able to get some sculpting work done on the work-bot. But that's going to need another few days before it's ready for a blog post. Thanks for watching! Have a happy new year! John

Thanks for stopping by! The second story/ sleeping/storage area of the cabin is completed and getting very ready for primer and paint.
The "docking clamps" are attached and will be joined to the "dock" when the ship is ready to be installed on the diorama (It had to be done this way due to structural purposes down the road.) Built a stairway for the catwalk.
The aft docking clamp see earlier will be fixed here. (The adjustable mounted clamp will be at the other end of the I-beam.) The wooden catwalk is also getting near ready for stain, paint and Grant Line hardware.

Heading in the right direction John, the docking hardware looks logical and practical, always a great combination for this type of scene.

Getting ready for primer and paint...sounds delicious ! Not delicious, but necessary. One final bit of required deck equipment. And black! a After the primer is cured I'll put on a layer of Vallejo's new metallic aluminum paint. This will then be given the hairspray treatment so that I can show some bare aluminum in a few spots underneath whatever I choose as a primary hull color. Still haven't decided on colors for the vessel yet? ?

Need to build 80 kits per year until I'm 100 to deplete my stash. Maybe I should sell a couple.

Looking for some feedback with these color pictures.(Obviously, we still need to do paint chipping around the yellow edge.) Since this is meant to be an aluminum boat, the usual rules about rust and corrosion don't really apply. I used the hairspray technique to reveal the aluminum layer. But can anybody offer ideas about what should be different here? I have the idea that the upper surfaces would be exposed to more sunlight and thus more faded than the surfaces on the bottom of the hull. But Is my approach wrong here? Should the chipping be more pronounced on the bottom of the boat? I just have a vague feeling that I'm missing something here in the paint chipping process.....Something just doesn't "feel right".
