Thanks Kiwi.
That's one dirty boat!
The problem with my ship is that I never imagined it having spent much time in the water. There's an artist named Ian McQue who has drawn a whole series of rusty old wrecks which float through the air and never actually seem to come in contact with water.
So I'm trying to weather a boat which never touches water, and yet sees maintenance at a seaside dock performed by robots with hands which can't, themselves, hover.......Ain't SciFi Modelling grand!

The only thing I can think of is that exposed aluminum does oxidize but it is only a duller metal look versus shiny new aluminum. Since you're using McCue as your inspiration, what probably seems out of place is that all of his boats typically are steel hulled in their paint and finish. Instead of just having the external green and blue over the aluminum in the chipping, perhaps working in some red primer as a layer will add the visual elements that seems to be missing? Just thinking out loud here.

Happy new year as well! Final colors before the addition of the more fragile underside equipment and then the weathering. I should probably get back to work on Carl, the work bot. And then there's about 4 figures as well.

I was able to arduously arrange an argyle array around. And thus, new boat cradle! The boat suddenly became very tall and needs now to be handled carefully.
Probably too shiny. But I want to leave these in their bare, blueish metal. We'll see how an oil based treatment changes them.
Hoses and wires and probes. Oh my!
overly complex steering thingy...Just because.
Also beginning to spray the first of the additional paint add-ons. There will be more of these, mostly on the bow of the ship. I usually wait until the very end to mount vehicles to their respective diorama base. But I'll be glad when this one is securely protected in its place. A day or two of gradual weathering to follow. Stay tuned. And thanks for stopping by! John

Three months to build another SciFi vehicle and I'm back to finish this one. First things first. Clean the shop! A big scratchbuild project will destroy your workspace. Minor progress on a bit of service equipment.
I'll get back into the MoJo of this diorama over the next couple of weeks. The boat is essentially done. I just need to finish and paint the figures and then add the 1,00 dirty little details common to any shop scene. From the start, this scene was all about scratchbuilding in the SciFi genre. The Star Wars ship finished last month has eclipsed this somewhat.

Paint and robot arms. Mostly done with the service equipment thingy. I have no idea what it's meant to do. But my daughter thinks it's a refueling unit.....That seems a good explanation.
It still needs some water streaking with a nice rust color. Might go peruse Adam Wilder's videos. Also getting the border installed for the water effect. Carl the Workbot has taken on a life of his own. I decided some time ago that I wanted to try, "vaguely creepy" with the overall design. But as of yet I'm not sure where the finished machine will finish; but I'll know it when I get there. In the meantime, I'm just having a lot of fun dicking around with paint effects and a badly engineered 1980's kit. This isn't going to be your typical thing. That's pretty much a given at this point.

John, you know I am partial to the odd flying boat!.
Looking fantastic as usual, the bot and base give it several points of interest other than the boat which is great.

The mirror between the operator's pose and the bot's is brilliant. Love it!

The service thingy and Carl look great John! Thanks for the encouragement, Leon. But I'm still not sure about Carl. In the meantime, figure painting and various work related things. The whole gang. Their names are Blue, Red, Green and Carl.
Futuristic junk style things.
Not so futuristic junk style things.
First layer of "seawater" added. Oh yes. And there was a hail storm. No damage, but loud as hell.

Some small progress with the scene, A portable arc welder for the workbot. It still needs weathering, obviously. The final layer of resin "seawater" is done. (No photos, unfortunately.) But it still needs some serious surface work with clear acrylic gel.

I'm still making progress here in fits and starts. With the final layer of resin water applied, I'm using acrylic gel for the waves. The problem with any water based material is shinkage. In this case it means that the waves which look about right when first put down will shrink too small once the material is dry. After 12 hours We shall see.
