The roof overhang looks fine at the rear of the house but the front looks like the wall has a bow in the middle ! Is this a fit problem or a just for the camera shot anyway ? Paul

Looking really good Andrew! Leon - Thanks for the feedback!! Guy - glad you like it. I just wish I had more time to finish it off but there has been some progress in the last few days!! Pretty cool... dig the vine! Andy - Thanks very much, I'm glad you like it. I have no idea how I came to hit on string for a vine but I'm pleased with how it looks! Looks good so far, Andrew. I gather, when all is said and done, that gap showing at the roof line will be gone? Looking at moi? Granted, you have to have a pretty warped view at times, but all my suggestions are sensible in some way. Keep in mind you're talking to a person who once stuck a catapult in the back of a truck and called it a Polish self propelled gun. Bob - Unfortunately the gap on the roof is likely to be a permanent 'fixture'. As it's use is for war-gaming, I want to be able to take the roof off to hide the troops and in the even longer term, I'm going to put a removable first floor in and maybe some stairs... Now onto your Polish SPG - I have to see some pics and I think such a project is worthy of it's own thread - any chance??? Coming along well. Looking forward to seeing you weather it up. Peter - thanks very much, hopefully I won't let you down! I've used your paper tissue idea on the chimney, some pics to follow. The roof overhang looks fine at the rear of the house but the front looks like the wall has a bow in the middle ! Is this a fit problem or a just for the camera shot anyway ? Paul Paul - Thanks for taking the time to have a look and comment. To answer your question, there was a slight bow in the wall, which I though I'd fixed with the braces but obviously not quite, which the camera angle accentuates.... . As I said to Bob above, the roof won't be glued on for the war-gaming my son and I do and unfortunately, it doesn't quite sit square hence the accentuated overhang. All the best Andrew

Hi all I've finally managed to get some primer on!! What is it about a coat of boring mid-grey paint that gets me excited?? I'm clearly sad!! Before I did the primer coat I try out Peter's (aka k1w1) idea of paper tissue on the chimney for some texture. If I'm honest I rushed it a bit (which seems to be a recurring issue for me ) and also found working on such small adjoining areas a bit tricky, so it's a bit heavy in places. That said it definitely shows a lot of potential - all I need to do now is practice it some more!! As always, please feel to comment and make any suggestions you wish! Yours Andrew --------------------------------------------------

That grey primer seems to pull it all together. Your chimney is looking good. Some old brick chimneys appear quite rough so I think you will get away with this no problem. Looking forward to seeing it painted - should be fun !

Nothing wrong with that at all for your first attempt Andrew! Remember 'John's Rule of 13 Tries' when it comes to scratch building or trying out new things.

Indeed!!! I think part of my problem is not having a proper work area and have to rely on the dining room table. I sort of feel obligated to make sure I don't take up too much of it for too long - after all there are three other people in the house - and me getting my modelling stuff out is often a queue for the kids to get their art and craft stuff out, so i have to share it with them! Fortunately it's a big table!! That grey primer seems to pull it all together. Your chimney is looking good. Some old brick chimneys appear quite rough so I think you will get away with this no problem. Looking forward to seeing it painted - should be fun ! Peter - I agree primer does that for some reason! Glad you like the chimney, it was a bit trickier than I thought but I'll get there! Ahhhhhhh... primer!
DogfishAs my airbrush is still not up and running I'm still using good old rattle cans in the garden shed with the associated fumes, so in my case it's more like: "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - priiiiiiiiimmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrr - soooooooooooooooooooo wwwwwwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyy coooooooooooooooooool maaaaaaaaan " - in a semi-tripped out late 60s, early 70s kind of way!!! Bob - Unfortunately the gap on the roof is likely to be a permanent 'fixture'. As it's use is for war-gaming, I want to be able to take the roof off to hide the troops and in the even longer term, I'm going to put a removable first floor in and maybe some stairs... As for the SPG, I don't know about a thread since that was before I started taking in progress pics. I should be able to come up with a pic or two of the finished project though. Bob - A pic or two would be fantastic!! Bill has really piqued my curiosity!!! Nothing wrong with that at all for your first attempt Andrew! Remember 'John's Rule of 13 Tries' when it comes to scratch building or trying out new things. Bill - indeed!!!!!!! - see my response to Leon's comment!! Now it is starting to look good altogether like the guys have mentioned. Andy - thank you very much! All of got to do now is paint it!!!! The things these cameras show up eh! Looks great with the primer on and the first photo shows a potential modification ? The split level back door of course ;-) PaulIndeed and they say the camera never lies......I think "the camera is sometimes economical with the truth" would be more accurate!! Split level back door! Interesting, just wish I'd have though about that whilst assembling. I lay the back door down they way I have to try and represent it being ripped or blown off in the heat of battle. Will post that idea away for the next house!! Thanks again!! Andrew

Hi all For the next step I thought I'd try and have a go at a new (hopefully fairly simple) technique to try and and improve the finish - preshading! I'm thinking of using it in two areas but would welcome your thoughts before I take that irrevocable step........... The first is the shutters. They have grooves similar too, if quite a bit thicker than, the panel lines on aircraft and so I thought will hopefully produce a similar result. The second is the roof tiles. Have you ever noticed how the downward edge of roof tiles are almost, without exception, darker than the rest of the tile? I therefore wondered it was worth trying pre-shading the edge of the tiles - which I know will take a while..... Below are a few pics of what I mean! Am I losing the plot more than usual? Are there any other areas you think would benefit from preshading? As usual all comments and ideas welcome. Thanks again Andrew ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shutter preshading - an idea of what I mean courtesy of MS Paint....(try not to laugh!)
Dark edges of roof tiles......I'm probably going to paint mine a darkish terracotta colour

I have never done any pre shading. Guess it is not so important for one who does not build aircraft models. If you paint the shutters and roof with darker colours I am guessing most of the pre shading may be lost ?. I would use a black wash after you paint them. Should be quicker and easier. If you use an enamel one you can remove any stuff ups easily with a brush dampened with white spirits. The Tamiya Panel Line Accent Colour in Black is a good product and should be easy to find. Also available in brown or dark brown which may be more suitable for the terracotta roof. I think I am giving you sensible advice ? Will see what some of the others think about the pre shading.

Personally, I wouldn't bother pre-shading the bits you marked with MS - I'd do that with a pin-wash after the painting is done. But you could pre-shade all the bits that are in shadow on your pic: under the shutters and the window sill, the bottom edges of the corner stones. Basically anything that casts a shadow when you put a light over the house. Hope that helps.

I agree with Dierk...pre-shading at this scale may be a real challenge to preserve vs. just doing pin washing or even 'post shading'.

Peter, Dierk, Bill
Pin wash it is!!! Have just re-read my post and I realised I forgot to mention that as an alternative.
Dierk
Will give the shadow idea try! Thanks for pointing it out!!!
I hadn't really noticed it and your right about the corner stones, they create a surpising amount of shadow for something that is not that much off the surface of the wall.
Thanks to you all for the advice!!

You may be biting off more than you can chew by doing pre-shading by hand,.... If, however, your going to spray top coats it is perfectly feasible.
There are special techniques you can use by spraying black up at 45 degrees and white down at 45 degrees, then spraying your top coat colours over these adds the pre-shade, its a similar technique to the one I use on my vehicles, again you can add extra touches of highlight to specific arrears by adding extra pure white to sharp edges.
I'll try and get some pics up tomorrow of a resin Humbrol building I did a couple of years ago using the technique described above

Here you go.... A Humbrol pre-cast resin building I bought when my son threatened to get back into wargaming with me.... His Rugby career took preference and now this sits in the bottom of my cabinet with the single Pz III Stug he made towards his army in it...... Anyhoo.... All flat surfaces were sprayed black at 45 degrees in the 'up' direction, then down at 45 degrees in white. Then using thin sprayed coats in the top colour square on. Details like cement joints were added as a wash, doors were pre-shaded as I do my vehicles, by spraying black, then random spray white in several layers to a fade. Smoke stains are just matt black and bird crap on the roof is done using a brush dipped in white paint then using the controlled air supply from my airbrush to 'flick' the paint off in random spots. I know you can do all this as I did it using the airbrush I sent you.... Now go have at it.... EDIT: Just been looking at the pics and the effect we are talking about here is most obvious under the eves of the roof and at the door heads, and out of interest the green on the doors and bargeboards is actually Tamiya German Field grey to give you an idea as to how much doing the black/white technique alters a colour. Good morning all So having woken up stupidly early for the second day running, I thought I'd share the completed pictures for this build as per my 'returning' thread. Started on here in January 2016.....picked up again December 2021......completed February 2022. It had sat languishing in a box for over four and a half years after I started painting the roof in April 2016 but didn't like the colour and so stopped halfway. The plan was to take Armourfast's super simple wargaming piece and upgrade it, as follows: - Add some texture to the walls and chimney to give it a bit of 'character';
- Add a second floor, again with a bit of character;
- Make it look slightly battle damaged i.e. broken windows;
- Add a vine/creeper thingy on one of the walls, to break it up a bit.
- Base it, again with a floor. The flock is all my own DIY concoction BTW.
I think I have done quite well. However, just bear in mind that this is designed and used for wargaming and so some sacrifices are inevitable e.g. it is not fixed to the base for easier storage and the lump of wood in the middle of the top floor is there so I can easily lift it out during battles (it's actually in the wrong way round in the pictures). All comments welcome as usual. All the best Andrew n.b. having a removable roof means it doesn't quite sit down properly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ So a reminder of what it looked liked immediately after assembly and I had roughened the walls.And the finished article.....
