this is so amazing. I could never do this... Yes you could. I absolutely guarantee that you could. I tell people the same thing every time they ask me about how to achieve better results, "The first dozen will suck. The thirteenth will be perfect!" There's no magic to this stuff. Just try a few, learn from the things that don't work out and keep building. Over time your desire to take on more challenging topics will increase as quickly as the number of finished models on your shelves increases. Final update for before a few days on the road. Terrain sensors....As if everybody didn't already know that they were terrain sensors.
Trying to determine how much gear-well detail will be visible on the finished model. Rear gear.
Forward gear-well.
Standby for a fascinating post on how I create about 12,000 hydraulic actuators for the engine steering vanes!!!

Nice work on the sensors John! I'm sure your spare parts are slowly dwindling down.

Well OF COURSE they are terrain sensors...otherwise they wouldn't be on the bottom, right? Looking good John! And you're right about the 13th try aspect when it comes to scratch building even some of the simplest stuff!

It's just a boring update. But I wanted to get something posted before I ran off to the AMPS show in Sumpter. Filling in the void spaces where needed. I like Magic-Sculpt because of the way it smooths out with water. Each brand has its own characteristics.
Gear bay fairings sanded to contour.
More edges smoothed in. I may go back with red Bondo putty. But the Epoxy putty provides a strong structural element which the Bondo doesn't.
General shaping to be finalized with wet sanding.
See ya in Sumpter!

Back from Sumpter's AMPS show with a few aftermarket items to enhance the lander. Decided that I wasn't happy with the look of the "terrain sensors" as compared to my reference pictures and created a mold for a better replacement. Standby for those. She's up on her wheels!I'm getting near to the first layer of primer and wanted to see how everything was coming together, the general "set" of the ship. Overall, the maintenance division is pleased! (Figures of aforementioned maintenance guys to follow.)
If anybody feels that this combination of Primer and model are a bad idea, let me know before I do something stupid. Detail statement: If you've been following along on the build, then thanks! I wanted to post up some thoughts on this whole damned thing before continuing. As this is a scratchbuilt model there absolutely will be bad spots in the finished surface. I'll do my best to smooth them once the primer shows me where they are. But my plan is to display the model with maintenance crews working on the "damaged" areas of the ship in those spots which may prove too bad to fill or fix. Doing this will require longer for completion but will add significantly to the overall fun of the finished scene and give it a more "Star Warsy" vibe. The tradeoff is that the extra additions will come at the expense of continuing work on the 10 other projects I've got going.

John, looking spectacular, very very nice indeed. Good idea about the maintenance crew/damages areas. That's why I like what-if so much...there is no right or no wrong. Just imagination and craft !
Keep it,will look cool with a splash of primer

I like the 'maintenance crew' option that's available to you! Nice! Watched the Blu-Ray release this past weekend with my wife and couldn't help but think of this project for the obvious reasons.

Watched the Blu-Ray release this past weekend.... I bought the same this afternoon. Just in time for painting! Finished and mounted four castings of the new and improved terrain sensors. The old ones were fine. But these are just a lot closer to those presented in the drawing.
I'm going for primer tomorrow. Let's hope I don't screw this up.

Sensor pods are looking sharp! I've no experience of the primer you pictured, but I've used automotive rattle can primer in the past with no problem - just bunged the can in a bucket of hot water for 10 minutes, shook and sprayed. Good luck!

Correct! I was a little worried about this phase. But my paint mule did just fine and the primer went down with no trouble. As expected, there are places which need fixing. But I'm glad to see that the areas about which I was most concerned, the epoxy putty zones, turned out very well. I'll give all this a day to cure and then begin repair work with red glazing putty. And just in time for painting, the DVD has been released to stores. These screen captures from the film will be my primary references for painting.

You've got the perfect diversion while you wait for it to cure, watch the bonus features! Looks like it should be relatively easy to fair in those few spots that need a little extra love.

So this is where you're hiding these days. Glad you stopped by. This is why my progress on the A320 doesn't move much. Just beginning to get a start on the final paint. Tamiya thinned with 90% rubbing alcohol in a ratio of about.....well it's pretty thin. I like the thinned Tamiya over the flat Automotive primer. The alcohol sort of soaks into the primer. There's a fast color change as it dries. But this allows for color to be built up very slowly. If you do make a mistake, it's easy to go back and work with it. Red putty, landing gear and rear armor plating. Troopers inspect the repairs to their ship.
