I started this kit as soon as it was released, got it mostly built, and left it, not wanting to hassle with trying to get 8 separate struts aligned, as the kit mountings were pretty loose. I didn't have the excellent Part PE set, but I did have a few bits from the ancient Eduard set for the old Monogram repop, and used a few bits, I cut out the control line pulley pockets, used a bit of sprue and one of the kit package bags for the cover. The only new PE I used was the Eduard instruments set, they really pop the 'office'. The markings are for Mick Mannock's late SE.

Wonderful looking plane, how long did it take you to rig the plane? Also, is it a long process to paint the wood grain and do you use a gloss varnish on the propeller to give it that realistic sealed look? Sorry for all the questions, but I am going to do my first Airplane model in the next month or so (Roden Gotha III) and I would love to get the prop looking half as good as yours looks and the plane itself for that matter(lol).

What material did you use for the rigging? It's quite thin given that this is a 1/48 model.

Not too long, even with the doubled flying wires. I use nylon monofilament, and drill the placement holes through the wing or fuselage, and fill the hole (I use #78 drills) with medium viscosity super glue, applied with a small tip. I do one side, let it dry, and then pull the other end taut, and tape it, and apply the super glue. Generally, I do all the gluing on the 'outside' surfaces, the top of the upper wing, and the bottom of the lower one, usually I have already painted or decaled (for lozenge) the 'inner surfaces'. that way you only have two easily reached and cleaned surfaces. The woodgrain is a light acrylic tan with oil streaking, with properly dry acrylic base, if you don't like the streaking, you can wipe it off, or re streak it, oils are flexible. And yes I cover the prop, once dry (oils take a while) with a satin coat (gloss is too shiny, IMO, for scale). This is 'old school', many now use that stretchy line, but the drill through part is still the strongest.

John, I use nylon monofilament, .005 inch, which scales to .25 inch or 6mm, seems likely to me. Of course those should be shaped RAF wires, but for 1/48, it looks OK.
