I think it's safe to say most model builders have a list of; favorite kits, worst kit ever, and ultimate builds. Now this list can and is always in a state of flux. I know in my case the favorite kit is the favorite kit. WORST EVER can change, although again for me only, worst kit ever has stayed the same for YEARS. That leads us to "ultimate builds". I think it's also safe to say that this category is also in a continuous state of flux. For me. to build a 1/25th scale model COMPLETELY from scratch,(wheels body and tracks) was the ultimate for almost 12 years. Now as that build is very near total completion including base, I needed to update my individual list. That is what got me to this subject........ of At this point I think it might be good for me to outline the concept of "ultimate build". I think this means that build that incorporates research, planning, assembly, detailing, painting/weathering and finally presentation. Utilizing all your skills learned as well as new techniques. Maybe even reaching out of your comfort zone. That is to say if your an armor guy, and your trying an aircraft, or some combination like that.
My current "ultimate build" has been circling the wasteland of my brain for about 7 years now, and this is building in 1/25th scale the WWII Wehrmacht Artillery piece 24.cm Rheinmetall K-3 Kanone. Please see the picture. Some of the challenges facing this build are:
- The sheer size of this thing is gonna be massive.
- Lack of tangible reference materials
- No current model to even up scale from
- No quality parts to scavenge
- no Accurate data on subject
Basically this beast is gonna be a challenge...............
Hopefully others will want to share their thoughts on ULTIMATE builds

It's a diorama.
Field hospital in a castle courtyard, WWII. 30-40 figures, 6 or 7 vehicles. Tall architectural elements with lots of grey roof tile. Visible rooms with full, lighted interiors. Cobblestones, moat-water elements and some horses, because, what the hell. Horses!

My ultimate build which I call my retirement project (whenever I can get around to it) would be the Accurate Armor 1/35th U-boat and Quay set. That sucker is huge! A close second would be an ideal I been kicking around for some time which involves picking up a second 1/35th Leopold Railway gun and attempting to do a 'Guns of Navarone diorama.

I don't really have an 'ultimate' project in mind these days...at one time it would've involved a 1/35 scale Dora but that's out of reach both financially and in display space! Closest to that I've ever come was a 1/35 BR52 pulling a couple of flat cars. The Pz IV is Dragon's "Super Kit" and had over 1000 parts all by itself. The full train and base is 5 feet in length.

I have five 'ultimate' 1/35 builds and list them not in any particular order of priority: Trumpeter SLT-56 Faun tank transporter with Leopard 2 (actually started on the Leopard 2) load IDF M980/981 Diamond-T tank transporter tractor & 50 ton Dyson trailer (AA resin kit) with Centurion load US M1070 Oshkosh HET tractor and M1000 trailer (Hobby Boss) with M1A1 Abrams load UK M1070 Oshkosh HET tractor and M1000 trailer (AA resin kit) with Challenger 2 load UK Foden 6 x 6 recovery vehicle (AA resin kit) servicing Chieftain Mk 10 or 11
So many kits, so little time.

It is a really interesting question and to be honest I had a hard time thinking about what would be my ultimate project. I can say I have in the back of my mind a winter night shadow box with a blue moon and some kewl blowing snow effects, but I also have a rail car idea with all sorts of damaged german armor being sent back for rebuild too, then there is the African Technical dio I have been working on behind the scenes.. Like I said I really don't know...

I really like the idea of a rail scene with damaged German armor.... again a HUGE build. Got to admit I toyed with converting "G" scale trains for the exact Idea in 1/24th scale.
Another very cool selection

Ultimate?!?!? It has to be either 1/35 Dora railway gun or 1/200 USS Arizona... it won't happen until I retire in 15-20 years or so.

Been thinking of this for awhile; Grafenwohr training area Field Artillery dio. Time and place; mid 80's early spring (which means mud! ) This would involve two vehicles with complete interiors; AFV CLUB M109A2 Howitzer and M548 Cargo Carrier.7 figures; and various other items as well as authentic Camo nets with correct supports and such. But still playing with it in my head. Kindest regards; Harold

I think at the moment my ultimate build would be the 144 USS Fletcher in the stash. In my head I want to do so much to it I know it will take a very long time. And I am not one for stopping in the middles to work on something else. And there is just SO MUCH I want to build.
Another would be a whole mess of Mig 21's./ I saw the new Mig limited edition kit with 39 makings and there are so many that are just so cool.

Now that I am retired I am going to build my Andrea Stagecoach in 54mm, from the John Ford movie. I managed to get this kit second hand but unstarted at a show a few years back. I managed to borrow enough cash from a friend to do the deal ( the wife was not happy). I will square away some other stuff and set too.
I also have a few ideas rattling around inside my head, one of which is an English Civil War diorama of 5 or 6 men sneaking up on the enemy.

Mine's a diorama: soviet WWII field workshop scene. I actually have quite a few of the kits I'm planning to use already: PARM 1 resin workshop bus, 85mm AA gun (got both one in plastic and one resin), Tractor towing in some broken down AFV or another (haven't decided which one yet), various vehicles being worked on. It would be nice to add the new Zvezda T-35 (unlike the Hobbyboss one it is actually dimensionally correct - and cheaper) as it provides the option to build it with some or all the skirts removed (ooh err missus) - still pretty sketchy ideas and I haven't been able to find any decent references yet on what soviet field workshops actually looked like. I don't even know if they had AA protection...

Man alive we've got:
- Fletcher Class and or MIG's
- A Stage Coach circa John Ford.... (I'd be up for the stage coach from "she wore a yellow ribbon") and or English civil war...OFF with their heads....(is that french?)
- A WWII workshop, which is always a gas
- An Airship that really might turn out to be a spaceship. Which in reality would be cool if you could combine both.....LOL
- Last but certainly not least the worlds most popular....... ZOMBIES. Someday somebody will have to explain the popularity of zombies. I personally don't get the whole fascination..... and wouldn't a 20mm Chain gun or Vulcan cannon just about do the trick???
Anyway another set of OUTSTANDING choices

This will be my Ultimate build. It is big, slow, impractical on the battlefield. Most importantly it is just cool. I mean really cool! And it's coming out this year!!!!!!!

It was based on a castle in Luxembourg. I was amazed at the level of detail contained in this huge model, I hope you can find this and that it gives you some inspiration. Dennis
