There's an annual show called Airliners International which also has a model contest. That show will be hosted right here in Denver in the summer of 2017 and I've decided to build a diorama for the contest. The rules state that the subjects can be any flying machine used in regular passenger carrying service. And because I have a weird sense of humor, a Russian helicopter seems just the thing! In the early 1950's Aeroflot operated Mi-4 helicopter service between the cities of Yalta and Simferopol, a journey of about 50 miles (80K). The kit:
The propaganda poster:
The soon-to-be-scratchbuilt interior:
Like any properly done helo kit, the first step is to cut off the rotor blades!
Anybody who's built a helicopter can tell you that the sheer size of the rotor system makes a base or diorama awkward. Thus, I've elected to place the helicopter in a maintenance scene which will include a second vehicle and about 3 figures. This provides an easy way to compress the rotor system while still retaining it in the diorama.
A similar process was used with the rotor hub.
You bet I did!!! This served two purposes. It allows a quick and easy way of assuring that each blade grip is in the correct track. AND it's fun to make helicopter noises while the hub spins in the drill.

Nice start John! Whoopp, whoopp, whoopp, etc. During the cold war in W Berlin we thought the Aeroflot slogan should be 'Come to us, before we come to you'

Need to build 80 kits per year until I'm 100 to deplete my stash. Maybe I should sell a couple.

Man, you've got more guts than me to start an expensive Trumpeter helo kit by cutting it all up!
The hub - did you make that out of metal? Or did you paint the plastic parts?

The hub - did you make that out of metal? Or did you paint the plastic parts? The hub is painted plastic. Photos of abandoned Mi-4 helicopters show that the hub will rust to a dark brown. So I'm guessing it's made of steel and painted. Большое спасибо!

Can someone tell me why I can't see the pics? They are just little symbols that will not open. It is like this on several post on this forum. I guess I will go to the Scale Model Critique on FB to view your pics Jim.

Doing helicopter noises is fun. I also catch myself doing the sound of Sebulba's pod racer, you know that "Dug dug dug dug" sound.

There's been some progress on this. Interior paneling. New, square windows with "plexiglass" added. Glue activated with UV light works almost as well as CA but doesn't fog plastic. The engine included in the kit completely ignores second bank of 7 cylinders as well as all the hardware which would have been needed to run 7 additional cylinders. Exhaust tubes added with lead wire and more Bondic to create transitions between seams. The baffling will allow me to pretend that my helicopter actually does have the correctly sized powerplant. But I'll need to do some scratchbuilding. Pretty close. But there's a lot of auxiliary stuff to be added yet. I also wanted to have a go with a painting technique I've seen the guys in Japan use with their robots Meh. Might be better with some staining and highlighting.

Cool! Our former country (GDR) had a lot of them too, there are a few around here for display. Ill watch this build closely, this is quite rarely seen, especially in this size.

I have been building, just not blogging. Trumpeter leaves much to be desired in the the front end. There's far, far too much empty space and not enough supplied in the kit to fill it. So I'm back to "making things up" as a generalized philosophy. I need a vertical surface as a place for mounting various components and filling space in the empty engin compartment. So an old Sherman turret fit the hole about right. Resin seat castings Turret installed. There's more to show. I just don't have any good pictures of it right now.

I could find no more excuses not to join the two halves. Thus: There's still a huge amount of detail work to be added to the engine. But it's all stuff which must be done with the engine in it's final position. Stay tuned for a day or two of engine work.

John
Apologies for being late to the part on this one.
When I saw the fist post about the build I thought what a brilliant idea. As for the build so far simply brilliant!!

Looking good! I may have missed this, but how are you doing the markings? Got decals to scrounge from? Or making masks?

Looking good! I may have missed this, but how are you doing the markings? Got decals to scrounge from? Or making masks? I don't know yet. I will have a go at home-printed decals. Failing that, I'll have to get an aftermarket set for something in 1/144 scale. The logos should be about right for this model at 1/35.
