Hello,
My name is Larry, I go by oldsarge. I'm not much of a model builder, but I have had an idea for a diorama after seeing some of the great work other people have done. I have been collecting parts and supplies for a while now, so after my knee surgery I decided to build a military diorama. So far it's going okay for my first time at this. I have run into a problem with building some palm trees. I have three Verlinden Productions trees , the palm leaves are brass and the the trunk is plastic. What type of glue should I be using? I would imagine it would have to be like a super glue in order to glue individual leaves on. any feed back would be appreciated.
By the way, the idea was to have to have a tropical scene with a UH1D conducting a vertical extraction of troops and a POW. If anyone is interested I'll post a picture when it's finished.

Welcome aboard Larry! If you have any questions, just fire away. You would be correct in using some type of CA glue.

Welcome aboard Larry! As Leon mentioned, CA (Superglue) would be your best bet to start with. Feel free to start a thread on your build...or share just the final shots! We have a friendly bunch here...not to mention some of the most knowledgeable people around!

Welcome Larry. I was a first time diorama builder nearly 7 years ago. Each one you build you learn a little more. You should post your progress in the diorama section so we can see what you are doing.

Welcome to MSC Larry. I would probably use gel CA for the job you've got in mind - gives you a bit more time to get the placement right. And yes, like the others I'd like to see some pics too. Do you know about annealing the PE to make it more malleable? And if for some reason the PE leaves don't want to do what you want them to - palm leaves are quite easy to make from paper.

Hello, Larry.
By all means, post pictures. And as the others have written, super glue (also called CA) is the way to glue metal to plastic. The gel style glue works best for heavy items like your palm leaves.

Hi Larry. Welcome aboard!!! Personally I use flickr to upload photos. I used to use Photobucket but it very slow and clunky. Flickr is much better in my opinion and I know a couple of the others use it too. The principle works the same as Photobucket though. Any problems let us know.

Thanks Andrew! I couldn't remember whats the name of other photo hosting site! There are many out there but flickr and photo bucket are probably popular sites that you can store pics for free.

Okay guys...Thanks, I forgot I had an old Flicker account. So here's the deal, Back when I was teaching at the U.S.Army jungle school in Panama (JOTC), I was tasked with putting together a lesson plan for conventional infantry troops to conduct POW snatch missions. Once developed, we used a technique to extract troop from the jungle using a method called "Vertical Extraction". Basically you're suspending troops below a hovering helicopter and lifting them straight up through the canopy to a safe location. I always thought it would be neat to build a diorama depicting this. So here you have it...my first diorama.
I know it's hard to see, but I actually tied little Swiss seats on the troop and POW, I then used a link from a small chain to create the carabiner. It's slightly larger than the scale I needed but it serves it's purpose. Please share your thoughts on how I could have improved this. Who knows, maybe I'll try a better one some day.
I'll post a few more pics.

I tried to hide the support for the helicopter by blending it in with the trees. The only place you can really see it is if you look straight up from the bottom, there's a small triangle piece glued to the bottom of the bird.

Glad you got it figured out to post images! Nice work on the Huey diorama. I can't figure out how the Huey is being held.

Thanks guy's! The more I look at it, the more I can find ways to have made it better or add more detail. The Huey is held up by a piece of coat hanger. One of the pictures shows a view from the bottom and you can see a triangle shape piece underneath the Huey. I tried to cammo it up a bit with foliage.
Is there a way to move this thread to the Diorama section? I noticed that I am not following the forum protocol.

You are fine not folling protocol...LOL Technically this is your introduction thread. Feel free to start a thread in the dio section...especially if there is a continuation of the project. The more you build, the more you will pick out things you ill want to improve. This is a fantastic beginning to your quest! The scene plays out very well and certainly tells a story

I am trying to decide on my next build, I think I'm going to build an 88mm in a gun emplacement. I've got a bunch of figure sets I need to do something with. I'm thinking of doing the gun with crew and a radio setup behind it. I think I'll do it with camo netting over head.
