Hellooooo,
My name is Matt and I'm new to your forum. For the last 3 years I've been trying to immerse myself back into the hobby that I left over 32 years ago. In the past three years I've built a total of 5 flipping models. It's completely and totally agonizing. Life keeps getting in the way.
I also belong to the Scale Modelers Critique Group on Facebook. It's an awesome group, and the purpose is to get constructive criticism, but I still feel intimidated. Anyway, the founding members of that group said that this was a great forum to join as well.
What do I like to build? I'm in a rut, mainly 1/48 scale aircraft and usually WWII, but I recently built an A-4 and I now I have a hankering for Cold War jets. I also have a bit of a masochistic streak. I have Academy, Tamiya and Hasegawa kits, but I seem to insist on building the old Monogram/Revell kits. I have delusions of grandeur. I want turn those sows ears into silk purses.

Welcome to the forums Matt!!! I feel your pain... every one of my kits seems to hit a wall at some point ( figuratively or literally as the case may be !). One of the things I found helped was to just pick the kit, and start slapping together parts.... I have found that by not expecting so much of myself or the kit initially, that the build develops a life of its own as time progresses. If the rut hits halfway through, I just put it aside and start, or work on, another kit that hasnt been worked on. If things get REALLY bad.... I take my paint jars and I paint the lids!!! Strange as it seems, some of my most calming works are taking my Vallejo paint bottles, shooting some primer grey over the caps, and then either airbrushing or hand painting on the color thats in the bottle (with the added benefit that I absolutely have the best reference whats in the bottle!). Seriously, JUST BUILD IT... it will come!

Welcome aboard Matt; I am glad you found the place! There is the friendliest and most talented group of like-minded people you will come across here on MSC. You will find constructive criticism, not intimidation here...just he way it is! There is nothing wrong with being focused on one particular genre, and there is certainly nothing wrong with going after taking a challenge and building off script form what people consider to be the norm. MSC's mantra has always been....build what you like, when you like and how you like it! Only rule is that you have fun doing it! Also...it is not about quantity, it is quality! Some folks build 1 to 3 models a year (if that), others build 40 to 50 (freaking Dupes ) But in the end, it comes down to whether or not you are enjoying the hobby! Looking forward to seeing what you have done an what you plan on doing soon....enjoy!!

I totally know where you're coming from with the silk-purse thingy. I've still got a lot of Monogram and Revell stuff in my stash to do exactly the same thing...but it takes SO much more time! As far as building more - the only thing I can recommend (works for me, anyway) is to do SOMETHING every day to one of your models. Even if you glue on five parts, or spray one color of paint, or apply a wash, decal, even research - eventually that build will be finished!

Welcome aboard Matt.
I'm also one of those who returned to the hobby after a very long break, so I understand where you're coming from.
The guys on hear have been brilliant since I turned up. No question is too daft, stupid or obvious. Without fail I have always received some really helpful advice and feedback!!
Looking forward to seeing some of your stuff!!

Ahoy Matt..................not sure why I'm talkin like a sailor, I'm a land lubber, HA!
No worries mate, just dive right in and ask away if you got questions. As you may have read, there's plenty of assistance to be had from all side of this paint sniffin, finger gluin hobby, so don't be shy. If you don't ask we may not advise, just make that first move and we'll help you any way we can.
Remember, this is a hobby and nobody has ever been born with a paint brush in their hands, as far as I know. We all been thru the bump and grind learning curve and the journey is worth the ride. So, relax and have fun and you'll be stitchin up silk purses in no time.
Cheers, Ski.
