Here's what's next

DML's Panzerbefehlswagen III J in Tunisia. The first of these were built from September to November 1942, so anywhere from El Alamein to the end in Tunisia is appropriate. I'm thinking a regimental command tank of Panzer Regiment 8, 21st Pz Div.

I scratch built the stowage box and jerry can rack. Green stuff sandbags and track link armor from my spares box. Tasca jerrycans.

BTW, anyone having any DML "Magic Tracks" for a Panzer III or IV you don't want, message me.









After this set of photos I saw the set of resin track links on the glacis had a section missing. I added that back from a spare link I had previously broken doing goodness knows what. 

Primed with MMP Gray primer. This is actually base painted in camo now and the details have been picked out, but I'm waiting on decals.




If the world cooperates I will post photos of her in paint tomorrow.

Andy it seems all I build any more are DAK vehicles. I have a Pz III kit for nearly every version and time period in the campaign.

Ok, decals are on. I'm letting this sit for a while as I build another Pz III J. I'll get that in paint and place the decals, then weather both at one time.

If anyone's interested I'd like to do a thread detailing my SBS process for weathering desert vehicles. I don't consider myself the "expert" by any means. I have though, achieved some very good results.

So good in fact, I have absolutely amazed myself!

Decals are on. Regimental command tank Panzer Regiment 5, 15th Panzer Division. This would be sometime after El Alamein. The first of J model command tanks were built between September - November 1942.







Next up, a Pz III (Funk) J from Versuchskommando (F.L.)Tropen.

I scratchbuilt the fender stowage box.









Funk means radio and Funklenk (F.L.) means radio control. They went to the desert testing these.

There were nights I wished I had a tracked armored vehicle at work.

FWIW, Ferguson, Missouri is just about 2 miles west of the St Louis city limits and the district I retired from.

Heck, we had bullet holes in the police sign on the front of our station. Tough town, good times though!

Ok, all I had time for today was the base color of RAL 8000. This is a mix of Tamiya paint based on Mike Starmers work found online. Flat Earth, Dark Yellow and Yellow Green are the base colors. I add a drop or two of Khaki Drab just to darken it up a bit.







I perceive RAL 8000 Grunbraun as a medium golden brown with a hint of green.

I go with 40% DY, 40% FE and at least 20% YG. after that I paint the mix onto white styrene with a brush. I'll add a drop or two of KD after that. I have also added some orange when I went to heavy on the FE. I'll sometimes modulate this with a drop or two of deck tan. I didn't do that today, after adding the RAL 7008 I will use oils and pigments to weather this. Remember these were freshly painted in tropical colors just prior to shipping over.

I had time to add the RAL 7008 this afternoon. I used my mix of Tamiya Khaki, Olive Drab and Yellow green. I'd put it at 60% Khaki, 30% OD and 10% yellow green. Again, I surprised myself with how good this looks. Well to me anyway.......









I just sort of eyeball the color so the overall shade is close to the RAL 8000 I mixed previously. They were two different colors, but boy is it hard to tell them apart in B/W photos. Look at the Bovington Tiger and compare the colors.
