Hello MSC.
First of all I am very impressed by the skill level of the artisans here. I know I can learn a lot here.
My background, in terms of skills and abilities, comes mainly from watching my father. He was a bulldozer mechanic who also built his own house.
After school I worked for a few years as sort of an apprentice to my father. I mainly worked on earthmoving equipment and did some welding. Then I joined the RAAF and became an instrument fitter and electronics technician. Then in civilian life I did a few more years in electronics. About twenty years ago I had a major shift in careers. I went to uni and got a degree in counselling, and worked as such until recently.
Now I work as a volunteer at the local navy and maritime museum. The task given to me is to modify a disused control panel, which previously operated a real lift-span bridge, to operate a model bridge. However, the task has grown from a electrical wiring job to actually building the model bridge, the boat that traverses under the bridge, and the electronics to make it happen.
The display area for the bridge is to be 4' x 8'. Not knowing what to do about modelling I did some research on the Internet. This is when I learnt a new word - diorama. There is so much involved, and I'll need help from the experienced Masters. So now I am back as I was many decades ago, an apprentice, a neophyte.
I have already started on the project. I am about halfway. I will soon be coming to the part where landscaping is required - the diorama part. That is why I am here.
