Thank you joelsmith , Leon @idor, and Andrew adt70hk for your comments. Much appreciated. ______________________________________ A short while ago a dear friend (Muz), and fellow cyclist, passed away from cancer. He had been fitting it for ten years. So in a way he got another decade out of life. A year ago he asked if I was going to include cyclists into the diorama. I said that I cannot find any road cyclists at 1:72 scale, and the idea of making them by hand seemed too daunting. However, A month or so ago, his health deteriorated rapidly. This inspired me to face my duantingness. I asked him to send me his best photo of him and his bike. From this photo I made the following. The Muz model is now permanently located on the bridge pathway, just before the traffic lights. Muz is waving to the observers a 'goodbye'. When he saw this model, it brought tears to his eyes. Shortly afterwards he died in his wife's arms. It was only a few days beforehand that Muz and us (friends) were having coffee at local cafe. We all were shocked by the sudden passing.

I love these vignettes you keep adding to this project. I know it's been a "trick of the trade" among the railway modelling fraternity to add life (and humour) to scenic layouts since the days instruction sheets were written in Latin, but it's nice to see it deployed in in support of such a massive project. It will keep others engrossed in the exhibit even if someone is hogging the interactive element (i.e. the bridge controls).

M

You did your friend proud there. I'm glad he got to see it before he passed. Too often these days I have thoughts of building stuff memorialising those I've known and who have now passed on; but they're no longer there to appreciate it (or make useful comments!). Inevitably, nothing emerges because I doubt my capacity to do them justice, or inactivity simply runs me out of time. Back last December I lost a friend I'd shamefully neglected (along with quite a few others) for a couple of years; being more than a decade younger than myself it came as quite an unpleasant surprise. His father had only predeceased him by a handful of years, and ever since Airfix brought out it's Fulmar I'd been thinking "I must do one for Mike's Dad" (he'd been FAA ground crew for them in WW2). As for Mike himself, as a wargamer he was into the Vikings and some time after his funeral I remembered I had a small longship in the stash: I thought I might have been able to consign a small portion of his ashes to eternity on board it, blazing on the local pond. But I'm all to aware of my bizarre brain and was reluctant to chance causing offense or distress by suggesting it to his sisters, so it was with a mixture of happiness and shame I later discovered his other friends had had more courage than I and he had sailed off aflame on the waters where his parent's ashes had been scattered.
Regards,
M

Wow, an amazing share M moramarth . Yes, I guess everybody secretly hopes to be acknowledged by unknowns after their death. It would show that others have thought of them - even without knowing them personally. As if their life may have left a positive mark after all.

Thank you @leon and S e r z h for your kind words. and show of interest. _________________________ Finally got through making 24 square feet of surafce water by using paper mache technique. It was one job I had lots of apprehension about, but not as intense as the one that is coming up - painting it. Anyway, as usual I started with the least noticeable section of the display (far left corner) and worked my way to the more noticeable (near right corner). Hoping I will improve the technique as I progress. This became true, and had to return to earlier sections to patch it up a bit.

Oh boy, I sure stuffed up the paint job. Only done 1/10th of the water. Started along the river banks. The dirty water look became too brown, opaquish, blotchy, and dark on outer edge. It's been a long time since doing any painting, and have forgotten basic principles. The rest of the river will contain blues and greens, which is not mixed with the brownish areas already painted. Need to repaint what I have done with a better colour mix. But first, I need to paint a background tone to get rid of that stark white as a comparison. Hope to improve on this.

The following is just a start. Got half way with the basic blending one shade with the next. Once the basic coverage is done, there is still lots more to do. I still have lots to learn with using acrylics. Starting from waters edge, I was assumed the water/wet mud and rocks would look darker, yet mliky due to dirty water. As the water gets deeper, the milky dirt browns take over. Then green got mixed into it (according to some silly plan of mine). Lots of detail stuff to be added later. Hoping the overall effort will improve the general appearance of the river. We will see.

To make the teal look, I used Cerulean Blue, but later, to get the water even darker I used Ultramarine Blue.

After finishing the basic colours for the river, I went for a needed bike ride. It has not rained for over a week and Richmond River, near the ocean, is very clear. Could not help notice a similar teal colour to what I have been painting. Took photos to show that such waters are not too overboard as such. Though, 20 miles up river, where Wardell Bridge is, is still dirty green. So far . . .

Brilliant! You've really nailed it! The gradation in the colours and the blending is superb. I suggest your next project is one of those customised cars which starts one colour at the front and ends in a different one at the back while being something else entirely in the middle...

Just to clarify why I added a card strip along the back edge of display. As I painted the water surface, I would also paint the card strip. This strip gets transposed onto the bottom edge of the canvas. It will be a water colour reference for the background of the diorama. The canvas painting will be in oil paints, my preferred painting medium. The painting will only look, in perspective, from the console operator's point of view. Below, is an idea of what the background will look like. As you can see, it will be mostly sky.

Thanks Leon @idor and Andrew adt70hk . Andrew, I am more grateful than proud. ________________________________ Sorry to show similar images. Spent the whole day dry-brushing the water surafce with lighter shades for the water crests. When it dried I was glad that it went darker, as previously explained. Now it's not so noticeable. Yet the whole water surface became slightly lighter shade Still lots of little touch-ups required. Then a three day drying period is needed before applying the varnish. Each coat requires 24 hrs drying time. Looking forward to see how it will look then.
