Just an update. There's a meme about people who get easily distrac....oh look, a shiny penny! Yeah, that's me and doing these builds. Chucked the idea of hexagonal slabs for the fountain for 2 reasons. I made a mold for the hexagonal pieces, but found there's scratches on each of the pieces. Thought my 2 masters were good to silicone, but apparently not and didn't want to sand a couple of 'em just to make another mold attempt. The other was with 2 pieces being cast at a time, I'd need to cast at least 100 times. Then remembered a 28mm cobblestone street mold I've had for years when I used to build D&D buildings. There's 6 pieces in the mold, so glued a couple of pieces together to make one large silicone mold of the 2 parts I need. Molds measure 5x5 inches. The long skinny piece fits on the side or top of the larger piece, while I have additional pieces for the corners.
Then got to thinking about concrete highway barricades for another diorama idea. So pulled Mengs highway barricade set out and using the one concrete mold that's in 2 parts, used it as my master to cast additional barriers. Not quite 3 dozen made. Also checked Google to possible paint jobs and didn't realize there were different types of barriers for highway or people/property control. Bought some tempura water based paint the other day and tried weathering the off white colored plaster with black paint, with disastrous results---piece looks a greenish black. Tried using a small blob of tempura concrete paint, mixing it in with the plaster and water. Comes out pretty good, though drying time needs to be longer, other wise I get some of the plaster sticking to the plastic piece. Those pieces are still useable as looking damaged as is. Used a silicon mold release originally, but found I don't need it. Just clean the 2 plastic pieces in water and scrub with a tooth brush. The fence job is something I tried quick and dirty just to see how it would look. Made of tube styrene and bug netting used on screen doors and windows.
I smoke and happened to look at the silver colored paper inside my cigarette pack the other day and noticed there's actually a VERY fine weave (indentation?) on both sides of the paper. I know many modelers use a mixture of white glue/water on toilet paper/paper towels to represent canvas. Found by soaking the pack in water for a few hours, the paper pack will separate from the silver paper without tearing. This piece measures basically 6x4 inches. Only problem is there's a separation line, making the one piece actually 6x3 inches useable as one piece. Need to get a can of o.d. spray paint and see how it looks, along with hitting the paper with a grey primer, then the o.d. Thought I'd toss this idea out. Will give an update on this later.
