There's a Facebook group doing a "May The Fourth Be With You" group build. It's meant to include any SciFi model. But there's heavy emphasis on Star Wars designs. The build begins on May 4th and ends when the new film is released on December 15th. I'm hoping to have this one done before I get to Omaha in late July. If you've seen the trailer for The Last Jedi, then you will recognise these screenshots. The ships appear in the trailer for a grand total of 2.7 seconds. From that tiny fragment I'm going to try to extrapolate a whole craft in 1/24 scale, which should be about an 18" span. It will be fun to see how close or how far off my guesses are once more data on these ships are released. I've begun gathering parts from my scrap bins. Watch this space for work to begin in earnest on the 4th. John

Happy Star Wars day! May the fourth be with you! Work has thus begun: Ultimate boring, stiff and badly sculpted figure set in 1/24. Less boring now. Considerably less boring now. Wing spar of brass tube has same angles and proportions as does the F-4 Corsair. Cutting plastic presently.

Hey John, which group is doing the build? Sorry. I missed the question yesterday. It's part of a Facebook page within the Scale Modelers Critique Group. It's an event simply named, SciFiBuild. I'm not sure if it's open to all members or just the ones invited by the guy who started it. But it seemed like a fun idea and the timing was right as I had just finished the Republic Gunship. So there's paint being sprayed and plastic being cut and such. Base tones sprayed. The neck is still too rough. I'll need to go back and fix that, maybe add some jewelry or something. Once again using the Silhouette Cameo cutter for thin styrene pieces which are laminated into heavier components. Achieving symmetrical curves is one of those things which is hard for humans and easy for a CNC machine. It looks like a shoe.

It runs till December right? Correct. More plastic and shape changing. This stuff is the best I've yet found for contouring.
Even an entirely computer generated Sci-Fi ship seems to have a few common model parts here and there.

Scratchbuilding is too often a game of "three steps forward, one step back." I got lucky and found these two leaked photos of the Crait Speeder. It looks to be a full scale mockup of the cockpit pod. But having a better idea of how big the vehicle actually is compared to the real humans standing next to it made me realize that my model is closer to 1/20 scale than 1/24. Thus, one step back, and I'm building up a set of larger figures to go with the model.
Brass spar fixed to a hardpoint inside the structure and more detail sheet cut with the Silhouette machine. Original pilot too small now that I know more.
The new guys.
So there we are. Thanks for watching.

Thanks, guys. I'm glad you're enjoying it. Small work. The base on the pilot is close to complete. It's almost time for oils and blending. I also added a hose between the breastplate and the ship.

As always John your work is truly mesmerizing to watch. What a fantastic guessinh game. One question though, what exactly is the point of these pod-like crafts? Especially when they seem to be scaring up the salt from the old dead sea salt bed.
Once again, I will be very happy to display this in the bigger Facebook Gallery, 'Large/Studio scale model Ships' gallery.

Man, you're flying on this one. And that cockpit is NUTS!
I was going to say that the switch to 1/20 might actually benefit you - there's a ton of figures and accessories for 1/20 scale to go with the Maschinen Krieger stuff. A lot more so than what you'd find in 1/24, as far as I can tell via google searches (and HLJ.com).
