There's a proposed group build over on Facebook which is all about building something huge. Most of the entries are shaping up to be 1/32 scale bombers or 1/48 airliners. But I've had this stupid idea for a while..... I've always liked the look of the Danube Class Runabouts from the Star Trek shows. But there's a problem if I want to scratch build one in my favorite 1/35 scale.
I created some drawings of the ship in 1/35 and as we can see..........Well, at least it will meet the size requirements of the Facebook build group Just like the figure, the Sherman and the Huey are both also in 1/35. 26" long. (.7 meters) The build doesn't begin until New Year's Day so I have a few weeks to complete other projects. But if I build this, it's going to be 6 months. It would also mean putting on a backburner whatever doesn't get done by the end of the year. In the end, I may be looking for excuses NOT to do it. I'm pretty sure I could pull it off. But this is a thing. A big, big thing and I'm not sure I want to do that much work.

John, nobody can answer this question but you. It's a cool project for sure, personally I would pursue other goals if I were in your place. But that's just me, I don't like the pressure of theme based group builds, only exception is if it incidentally overlaps with my very own plans and interests. So, if this is of any high priority for you, then let's go!

Well, ask yourself if you'll regret not having tackled this project, and if so, would you start it at a later date without the incentive of a GB. Ball's in your court

If you don't feel like doing it, don't. There is nothing worse than building a kit you really don't want to do. You will loath the entire process because you will be thinking about all the other kits you could be working on. But, like they said, it's up to you.

Does it have to be that big? Could you scale it down and make it more manageable, and perhaps, also more enjoyable and less time-consuming? It sounds like you're already having 2nd thoughts about tackling something on that scale and the sheer amount of work it would entail to achieve an artificial goal (1/35) when a potentially simpler solution could do the same thing while still qualifying as 'big'?

Build it only of you want too.. I have yet to finish a group build as I always go in with good intentions and a Great Idea (Least I think so) then get burned out real fast.. (The other reason I think I have 8 or 9 In progress Threads at the moment)

Who should build it, when not you.

Just think, you'd have a 1/35 scale Danube-Class Runabout when you finished! Was going through the latest issue of IPMS/USA mag, saw that you won the Sci-Fi dios category with your Crait Skimmer. Congrats on the big win!

Oh yeah, That was in there, wasn't it. I'm looking forward to the movie as it seems that we're going to get a lot of flying scenes with Finn and Poe in the Ski Speeder.

Does it have to be that big? Could you scale it down... Scaling it down is impossible, out of the question. You see, all of my figures are in 1/35, so the model HAS to be 1/35. It would be impossible to find figures in another scale, just impossible. We're not allowed to start building until January 1st. But I think I might use some of my hotel time for laying out frame members in the Silhouette software. If I decide to build it, I'll have a portion of the planning already complete.

This sounds more like a "no time limit" side project. You know, one that's worked on when you feel like doing it without a deadline hanging over your head. It may take longer, but I think you'd be happier with the build in the end.

There are some smaller scale figures out there. but if you like the 1/35 scale then what the heck go for it. Preplanning is your friend and laying in building supplies will get the creative juices going.
