Please tell us what dioramas you would like to build. Post an image, or a description, of what the diorama is to be based on. Please NO images of dioramas already built. Here is one scene I would like to build as a diorama. It is quite dramatic, especially with survivors in forground and all that lighting.

That Titanic diorama would be so cool! For me I always wanted to do a D-Day landing diorama... hopefully one day!

A couple of great choices! The Titanic is an tremendous though...and build! Thinking I would hit a sunken version though! But that's just me! LOL Not too much on the board for thoughts of anything. Working on two I would like to complete soon...A tiger and a 109. Both underway, just need to keep focused!

I've been a bit reluctant to weigh in on this thread as I cannot be described as a diorama builder: even my waterline ship models usually lack a sea base. The nearest I usually come is when building wargame armies where the rules require figures grouped in multiples on a common base; with these there is often the possibility of posing special items (e.g. A General) as a small vignette. However, I may be able to make a couple of suggestions. Firstly, with regards to "The Flight of the Phoenix" while the 1965 movie used the Fairchild C82 packet, the 2004 remake used the later Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar which was kitted in 1:72 scale by Italeri back in the 1980s and has been re-released on several occasions since, albeit most recently modified as a AC-119G Shadow or AC-119K Stinger. So that is likely a possibility. Secondly, the sinking RMS Titanic might best be done as a "Box" diorama with limited viewing angles but which also helps limit the level of illumination within it, I'm assuming with your electrical skills you would prefer to light the model rather than reproduce lighting effects with painting techniques. But as an alternative, while most people know about the Titanic, I don't think there have been many dioramas depicting the sinking of her sister, HMHS Britannic... Thirdly, the "Thunder Child". From the inclusion also of the chap fighting the squid thing, I'm wondering if I detect a liking for the "Steampunk" genre; I'm heading in that direction myself. May I ask if you are leaning towards reproducing the Jeff Wayne illustration you posted, or making your own interpretation of the events as described in the original novel? If the latter, I have some ideas which you may wish to consider.
Regards,
M

I have a long list .............. Care to share? I have 3 full pages of diorama projects I have interest to build and that I continue to add to every time something comes to mind. I am guessing the list stands at about 90 now so a few to many to list.

I am guessing the list stands at about 90 now so a few to many to list. You have a list which you still keep adding to. This signifies that you are still searching for your ideal dioramas. In mind you must have at least some favourites. Perhaps favourites you don't want others to know about. If that is the case, why not share with us some of the bottom of the list ideas. You know, the least likely one of the 90 you would build.

I often get an idea of a diorama I would like to build and just add it to the list so that I don't forget it. Favourites I don't want others to know about - No I don't have secrets, I doubt anyone would want to steal my ideas. I just think most people would have little interest in seeing a list of dioramas I want to build. I will list a few..... Ned Kelly - Famous Australian outlaw from the mid 1800's. Made and wore set of armour made from steel to protect himself from bullets. I want to build a scene with him in his armour. Will probably replace his horse with a modern motorcycle. Hutong - A want to build a Chinese hutong scene with heavy weathered buildings and lots of bicycles. The batchelor - A room box showing the messy kitchen / living area of a batchelors apartment - want to add a little humor. Darlek - From Dr Who. I want to do an old industrial building with rusty old machinery and a long time dead, weathered Darlek in the corner. Pandora - A scene with the floating rocks from the movie Avatar. Dead Stormtrooper - A scene with a long time dead stormtrooper ( Star Wars ) laying in a desert partially buried and weathered. Living the dream - The trailer home of a hoarder. Droid Repair Workshop - Like a garage workshop but for repairing robots and droids rather than cars. I also would like to build some more garage dioramas, rusty car dioramas and some post apocalypse.

On further reflection and considering your scratch-building talents I think you might actually restrict yourself using molded plastic components for your fortification unless they were simply a basis for modification. I am drawn to them as a wargaming "quick fix" but you have shown you're not afraid of a long-term project; also wargaming components are intended to sit on a flat surface while it is likely scratch building would produce a more authentic fit onto a naturally-contoured base. With regard to trebuchets while some did sit directly on the ground as in your illustrations I seem to recall a TV programme on building these (War Wolf?) which noted some counterweight trebuchets sat on small wheels like the trucks of a naval cannon carriage, which appears a bit odd as they were broken down for movement between sieges. By experimentation it was determined the trucks were there to enable the trebuchet to "recoil" back and forward as the arm swung which was of some benefit to the bigger machines - I can't recall whether it improved range or accuracy, or reduced strain on the structure, or all of these. I'm not going to go into torsion engines just now; while manuals for their construction from antiquity survive and were known of in the medieval period, their interpretation remains a minefield...

M
