While "authenticity" is scarcely a problem with models of "paper projects" it might be worth noting you may want to shorten the barrels of the main armament a little. It would appear that Modelcollect are re-using their turret from their Austrått Fort kit, which is wrong for the "Ratte" as planned. The "Ratte" was intended to mount the 28cm SK/C28 turret (minus the middle gun) as fitted to the Panzerschiffe, the guns of which were 14.8m long, while Austrått Fort utilises Gneisenau's "Caesar" turret which has the 28cm SK/C34 gun which is 15.4m overall. I also believe the turrets were up-armoured when used ashore, although Turret "Bruno" at Fjell Festning was scrapped (in the late 1960s?) I understand some of this additional plating remains at the site.
Regards,
M
P.S. I've had another look at photos of the surviving turret and it certainly has additional armour on the upper (sloped) faces of the turret front and sides; presumably the roof and upper rear face has this also. The kit depicts this accurately. The additional protection would be because aircraft bombs would be more of a risk with the turret employed ashore whereas the original armour scheme was designed to resist short-range (impacting obliquely) and plunging long range fire from naval guns. As such it may not be inappropriate to the "Ratte" but the weight penalty is substantial.

Hi, Tobias, I'm sorry I didn't think of this sooner, it may be too late for your build but may help anyone in future who follows this thread as a build guide. There's a trick wargamers use which might help you get the best out of that additional weapons set you bought. As you probably know some Games Workshop kits have so many options you have more bits left over than you use to build the model. They also insist for their competitions models have the correct weapons fitted to depict those being used. With up to half-a-dozen (or more?) alternatives per model, gamers don't want to buy a usuriously priced kit for each variant (although GW would like them to) and are faced with the problem of leaving each weapon loose but still have it fitted firmly enough to keep it on the model for the duration of the game. The solution adopted by many is to use small Rare Earth magnets to attach optional components. These are countersunk into the base of the attachment point on the model (usually a socket) and into the end of the attachment point (usually a peg) on the weapon. It struck me that if you were to use a similar method for the bases of the alternative weapons (I note they seem to have different turret ring sizes) you need not commit yourself to choosing one set-up at an early stage of the build, but could even swap stuff around after the model is completed. At an extreme, you could even have an alternative superstructure you could use instead of the main turret for, say, a Bergeratte...
Regards,
M

Late-war German designers obviously indulged in some seriously mind-bending drugs (Orderly! Fetch some more Pervitin!)

I've got a good amount of respect for folks that build armor subjects because of all the details involved. Fantastic progress so far.

144 roadwheels...I'd say that definitely qualifies as hell! Glad you made it through it, you can take comfort at least in that they don't have rubber rims.

That´s right, no rubber rims to paint. I think that would be to much for a normal modeler. Painting this Monster will be hard enough.

Nice work on the stripes! I wouldn't want to be the crew that had to be between those exhaust pipes...can only imagine how much heat those suckers would be putting out.
