Good evening ladies and gentlemen!
Gather round, and let me tell you a story....
A few months back, Dupes and I were talking, and we realized that our friendship had begun TEN years ago. That friendship was initiated over on FSM (can I refer to another forum here??) when a thread was started for people to share their stash lists. At the time, my stash was pretty small, but it included kit 6252 from Dragon. Their hot, packed to the gills with extra goodies, Tiger I Initial.
Shortly after I posted it, I got an e-mail from this guy "Dupes" who inquired if I'd be willing to part with the kit and would I like to work out a trade. Months of back and forth culminated in Dupes arriving at my house in Connecticut in the fall of 2008 so we could meet face to face, complete the trade, and go to AMPSEast (now Armorcon) in Danbury.
In honor of the ten year anniversary of the start of our friendship, Dupes and I have decided to do a Duel/Dual build of the kit that "brought us together": DML 6252.
The kit features options for three tanks, all from sPzAbt 502: numbers 100 or 121 (with or without a snorkel).
Dupes will do his build of tactical number 100, I will be doing 121 minus the snorkel. Our "official" kick off for this build is tomorrow, 15 June 2018 which, as best as he and I can remember, is about the mid-point of our back and forth negotiations over the kit.
I'll post some preliminary pics when I have a chance and, I believe, Dupes will be chiming in soon. We hope you all will enjoy the show.

OK, so, a few pics to show everyone what we are up against. The kit, as I mentioned, is DML 6252, the Tiger I Initial: And, as many of you probably know already, it is PACKED with stuff: A look at the front page of the instructions gives an indication of the part (700+ ) breakdown: My plan is to build OOB, with the minor addition of some brass MG barrels and maybe a few minor odds and ends. I'm not sure what Dupes plans, so I'll let him share his own vision....

Hey, here I am! Getting to this a bit later than I thought tonight (trying to wrap up construction on an Italeri LVT), so pics will have to wait until tomorrow. Been perusing the spreadsheet to figure out what aftermarket will go into this one...think it's going to take a stash dive to figure out for sure. I know the only thing the kit NEEDS is some screens on the back deck. No idea why Dragon didn't put those in the box when every other possible thing is in there? This is going to be fun!

I built the 6600 smart kit version. I'd be very interested to see the differences between the kits...do you still have the instructions, Leon? Particularly that first page with the parts breakdown?

That's the one! Interestingly enough, it doesn't appear complete...where's the "D" sprue for the base of the turret? Doesn't look like that's listed. Man, there are a LOT of differences between the two kits. You'd almost think they weren't the same variant!

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...I built this one and it ranks up there as one of my all-time favorites. IIRC, the reason it doesn't have screens for the back decks was due to the question, at the time of the kit's release, on whether or not these initial Tigers had them. I don't remember off the top of my head if that question was ever definitively answered. Here's the build log I kept way back when...2006 to be precise. www.bpmodels.net/Model/Album/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7

No worries Boyd, I'm sure you and Dupes will do a fine job! Just don't let Dupes out-pace you and have his done in a week.

You started it about six months after I got back into the hobby (twelve years ago now!) and it was, quite honestly, one of the builds that made me want to get serious about modeling. Thanks a lot, BILL! Separate subject - interesting about the screens. A few minute google search turns up nothing definitive (lots of cool color plates, though) other than a veritable buttload of aftermarket sets to fix the lack of screens in the kit!

So I have officially fondled plastic this evening in an attempt to nail down what aftermarket (if any) I should use on this build. I've got a big Voyager PE set, a set of just-grills from Tamiya (which may or may not fit this kit), a few Voyager damaged road wheels, a set of Elefant model tow cables, and some Fruils.
Now the Friuls are the ATL-25 set for the early Tiger, which appears to be incorrect. At the time I got the kit, they were the MOST correct option, but they aren't mirrored like the tracks in the initial should be. Somewhere in the intervening ten years, Friulmodelissimo released set ATL-116 which is indeed made for the initial. No worries, these tracks can be donated to either my Tamiya or Academy early Tiger...the question is, do I fork out forty bucks for an accurate set of metals, or stick with the magic tracks?

You can't blame me for your plastic addiction Dupes but it is cool to know that my build was an inspiration way back when. The kit's Magic tracks build up nicely...but of course aren't workable. All comes down to what you want and can get away with financially! You guys better post up some pics soon before Dierk hunts you down and uses CA on your eyelids...

OK guys, Over the weekend, I managed to make some progress on the Tiger. I think have mostly completed the first five steps of the instructions - which amounts to the running gear and a start on the rear hull. I did take a few pics to share. Sorry about the hazy quality of the first couple. I think my cell phone camera was feeling the heat. The running gear for this kit is.... a lot. But, of course, it's a Tiger, so no shocker there. As you can see from the pic below, I did use the torsion arms (and removed the pins for the sway arms). In hindsight, I probably could have saved myself a headache but not going that route, since I don't think I'll need much (any?) motion in the suspension... And a picture with stuff dry fit. I'm going to leave it this way for now - both for ease of painting and to make sure I don't set myself up for failure when it comes time to attach tracks. Next, some work on the rear of the hull. Exhausts, tow shackles, etc... And, what it looks like as it all starts to come together: I'll be out of town for a few days, so no updates will be forthcoming from me. However, I'm sure Dupes is probably done construction and on to paint by now, so.....

Off and running, literally! You'll appreciate having those suspension arms work when it comes time to attach the tracks, it helps a lot.
