How about another update on the Hasegawa 1/32 P-40E. First up here are the last pictures of the interior prior to closing the fuselage. With that ready I can begin the reconstruction of the wing. Starting with the framework. I did do a bit of work on the wing armament. Here is my rendition of the M-2 fifty cal. And not forgetting. A picture of the fuselage closed. All comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged. Joe

Well my friends another update on the Hasegawa 1/32 P-40E. This one is all about the wings. Construction of the framework is done. The stringers are in. The ammo box is in. The wing has been prepped for the armament. Next up is adding some color. First is a base of Stynelrez Metal Primer. On that a very uneven almost haphazzard coat of Stynelrez Flat Black. The true colors start with a patchy coat of Model Master Acrylic Zinc Chromate Yellow. This coat is to mimic the actual primer coat of WW2 aircraft. Model Master Enamel Olive Drab is sprayed paying attention to the panel lines but allowing a bit of overspray in areas. A bit of sun bleaching is added by spraying Olive Drab lightened with Model Master Enamel Flat White. Honestly it is how I had hoped. Next step is the little bits and bobs for the interior of the wing and then to attach the wing to the fuselage. You can see one of the major issues upcoming, that wing root gap. All comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged. Joe

Joe No problem at all!! It is a simple statement of fact. It's already looking amazing and it's still a long way off completion!! It should look stunning once finished. Do you enter any kits into shows? ATB Andrew

A quick update on the Hasegawa 1/32 P-40E. In short the wing is on. It took a massive six hour battle but it is on. There was some collateral damage. Of the damage some I was able to work with, the rest I cannot fix without total tear down. Not sure I want to go there at the moment. For now. Now I can move on. My real decision is do I place the details in the wing and risk breaking them in the rest of the process or do I move on with decals and smaller parts. Gonna have to think on that one. All comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged. Joe

Always the old conundrum of when and how to add/handle stuff Joe, it all comes down to making a compromise between risk and being able to actually finish it! Looking pretty sharp as usual my friend.

You already know how I feel about these builds of yours Joe.
This statement right here is what blows me totally away though:
And I quote: " I have not entered any shows no. Never thought my work would stack up against others."
All I have to say to that is............Say wut?!
Good buddy Joe, just take something like this to a show, put it on a table in whatever class............and walk away. Go have a good time and see what happens.

You are all very kind. Joe I see the flaws and cannot seem to get by that. Joe I had the very same apprehensions that you do when I started going to shows Joe. At first I was pretty intimidated by some of the other models that I saw on the table and then I started seeing flaws in some of these builds. It's rare to see a built up model WITHOUT flaws so with that in mind I put mine out on the table and went off and had a good time at the show. At the end of the day I was shocked to not only walk away with first prizes but also a "Best in Automotive" award and lemme tell you there was some GOOD models out on display. In short.....you never know till you try. You're a humble guy so you'll probably be just as surprised as I was I'm thinkin.

Joe, I agree with what’s been said before. Every kit at a show has opportunities. Your builds are unique and you have skills many others would appreciate seeing and learning from. It’s not a failure or an embarrassment if an entry doesn’t win. I’ve easily got three times the 2nd place finishes than I have firsts. Shows are a great place to meet modelers and learn “how’d they do that!” Go show these amazing builds and have fun. Your work DOES stack up. Rick

An update on the Hasegawa 1/32 P-40E. This is a happy but yet unhappy update. First the happy. The markings are on. I have done just a little chipping so far with more subtle weathering to follow. Next up will be an oil filter to try to tone down the bright markings. I will also be working more on the landing gear. Now the unhappy. Ok down right disappointing pictures. Yes disappointing. You have seen the pictures I spent around two and a half hours to get. I was so disgusted I reset the camera back to the default factory settings. I then made just enough adjustments on the fly to get what you see. Now the disgusting part. Here are two photos that were taken just a point and click with my phone. You will see in the one on the workbench just how the color is in reality. The other was immediately after taking the last of the earlier pictures. I am most unhappy with the earlier pictures as they wash out the color a bit and lose the different tones in the paint. May have to go online to get a crash course in picture taking. I had come so far and now it is lost again. All comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged. Joe

With colors falsified like this it was most probably a matter of wrong white balance and maybe a little overexposure.
It's always a good idea to check your photos immediately on a large screen, though this has the problem of not being calibrated. But you know the real look of your model and can then re-do the camera set-up accordingly.

Ok friends a post with two objectives. First: I have begun the weathering on the 1/32 Hasegawa P-40E. Using both a cheap set of oils and Abteilung 502 paints. I want to give this build a finish that suggests a story of an aircraft that has seen some hard use but is still airworthy. The aircraft was based out of India and supported flights over the Burma hump. Now the second objective is the quality of the pictures. I have spent quite a bit of time over the last four or five days trying to dial in a better quality picture. These are the latest in the test. Please all comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged. Joe

My impression is the latest pics have sharper details, but the colors are again too light. Your basic setup should be smallest possible aperture (at least F/8) for long depth of field and let the camera automatically choose the exposure time. The film speed should be around ISO100 or ISO200. The rest is factory setting.

With these the iso is 100, the f stop is 29, the exposure is .7, and I have another setting on there that seems to control an opening on the lens for light control. I have been playing a bit with that one as well. Small adjustments until I find something close and then I have been trying to refine that.
Previously my exposure has been anywhere from 1.7 to 3.

Then my best guess is it's the white balance. Try to play a little with that. My camera has different pre-settings (sunny, cloudy, artificial light, and so on). I can even choose color temperature. And you could also try different settings from F/29 down to F/16 or even F/11 to see how they affect the result.

Well all good things must come to an end. This is the finished Hasegawa 1/32 P-40E. Let me recap. -Scratchbuilt interior minus seven kit parts, one resin engine, and one resin seat. -Scratchbuilt tail wheel assembly. -Scratchbuilt wing framing. -Scratchbuilt .50 cals. -After market decals. All told way to long to finish. But I will take it. Again the pictures are much too faded but this time I know why. There are some issues/omissions, glaring to me. The ones I did not fix are the ones that would require me to tear the build apart and start over. Thank you for looking in. All comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged. Joe

This is an exceptional build Joe. One of your finest I might add. I've always admired your courage to go all out and open your builds completely up. Are there flaws? I'm sure there are but you do such an amazing job at showing off what most everybody really wants to see and that's what makes these planes "tick" that a lot of times those shortcomings are simply overlooked. I mean the wing spares, fuselage innards, control cables....you know ……….the guts of it all. I remain amazed at your work as well as your humble attitude through it all bud .
