Another junk box special, a Magach 2, Six Day War period, most likely a straight-up M48A2C in IDF sand, with a Sherman cupola. Raw materials: IMG_8132 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I have no idea if the Monogram kit will be used or not, or saved for later... And so far, hull halves together, fenders off, wheels started: IMG_9146 by Russel Baer, on Flickr

A small oopsie: all the Magachs based on the M48A3 got the 105mm gun and were used in the YKW. Only M48A2 and -A2C models were used in the 6 Day War, and that's what I want to build, so I pulled the Monogram kit out (it's an M48A2, can't tell it from the -C other than the little track tensioner in back) and hacked out the engine grills and part of the hull, and grafted them into the Academy hull. I'll probably not want to do that again. So far: IMG_9147 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I very briefly considered using the Monogram hull, but I hadn't realized how toy-like it is, so I just did some more hackery. I also cut off the second and fourth idler mounts. Fenders will be fun, probably part Dragon and part scratch. I think for the next "project" I may do an actual Magach3, but one converted by the IDF in-house from an -A2. Oh, one might ask, why didn't I just use a Dragon Magach 2 kit? Well, I don't happen to have one, but I do have two more Tamiya kits just parked in the stash.

I'm having too much fun plugging the giant holes in the hull bottom, and while I'm there, I'm adding some over-scale bolt heads to the suspension mounts, more for visual interest than anything else. I'll be glad when Takom or AFV Club (or maybe in my wildest dreams, Tamiya) do an M48. I just don't like the Dragon kit, but that's me. Anyway, the final drives are on (Dragon parts) along with Tamiya sprockets, mud holes added by me. IMG_9149 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I'm filling the huge locating slots and holes on the hull front too, lots more scrap plastic and putty: IMG_9148 by Russel Baer, on Flickr Lots more fun to come yet.

What you might build next is a M60A3 that was dumped of the Southern US coast as an artificial reef! ;<)

been thinking seriously ( I know I'm never) about doing an M48a2 out of the Three Quarter CAV 1967 / 1968 era. Actually the tank on the box is one of them! Still I want one of Dwight Birdwell's. Been looking at the Dragon and Revell kits for a starting point. Eduard used to do brass PSP plate. A certain Command Sargent Major has promised me photos for two agonizing years now!!!!!!
Anyway, looks like your off to a good start! gary

I just found a copy of Ralph Zumbro's book too, "Tank Sergeant" and it's loaded with good stuff as well. Oddly enough, one of the kits I picked up a couple of weeks ago in San Antonio was the old Academy knock-off of the Tamiya M48A3, the one I'm actually using here, and it had some resin turret sandbags in the box, maker unknown but it looks like either AEF of the old Hard Core stuff, real light resin, that fits pretty good on the Tamiya turret. Hmmmm, I feel a "Model B" coming on.

Sometimes something simple can make a lot of difference. For those of you who have built any of the old Tamiya M48 or even M60kits, you may recall how chunky the swing arms are, not at all like the real thing. In an instant of inspiration, I decided to just round off the edges of them, nothing major, and the result was well worth it, enough that I will do it on any of these kits I build in the future. It makes a lot of difference in appearance. IMG_9580 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I've tried to make the idler mounts look a little better too, nothing major.

Hmmmm, I feel a "Model B" coming on. WE heard about this guy down in Two Corp that was nicknamed "Nine Lives". Of course that was Birdwell. In 1970 my brother inlaw told me about "Nine Lives"! Said they heard about him down in the rubber plantations. Read Zumbro's book, and The one on tank battles in RVN. Search And Destroy is pretty good, but you have. to remember Nolan wrote it. That one takes place in my old A.O. Both books have a little hype about the Pineapple Forest ( a place tanks rarely went thru), and had a laugh. Although I know of a number one man that led eight men thru there in broad daylight (talk about stupid). I need better pictures of Birdwell's 48 to see how they mounted the PSP plate. Plus I've seen ACAV's with it. Even saw a photo of one with the wood seats out of the back of a duce and a half! gary

Every little bit helps, right? the spaced armor helps to defeat the crystalene war head on an RPG. a few inches of Styrofoam between the hull and the PSP will do a job on it as well. Sheridan crews often filled the ammo boxes on the turret with sand to cause a premature explosion. On the otherhand hand you can forget about all this with a 75mm recoilless rifle. It just keeps going and going! gary

More stuff: suspension pretty much done, using the kit bump stops faired in with quarter round stock and green stuff, and for grins I test fitted the wheels. Russ images 3.4.20 by Russel Baer, on Flickr russ images 3.4.20.2 by Russel Baer, on Flickr Lots more to do still, but it's starting to look like a tank now. Fenders are gonna be fun, probably lots more white stuff and as much Dragon pieces as I can make fit.

Mad giggle here.... I had some time today and last night, so I modeled, therefore I am. I'm using a Dragon turret with a DEF models mantlet cover, which I modded with Aves 2-part putty to look like the big bag the IDF had on these tanks before the re-fit after the 6 Day War when they all got diesels and 105s (probably my next build btw.....) Fenders are Dragon M48A3, less the air cleaner portion, which I'll re-do in flat stock. Getting the front portion of the fenders to fit was a little tedious, but the hard part is done. IMG_9773 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I've got some of the detail parts on the front hull also, mostly Dragon bits, and will probably finish up with the last of those parts, except for the turret basket, which I don't have, but I do have a box full of old Verlinden brass and resin for M48s and -60s. Hmmmmm..... Edit: I can't find any pics of these tanks with Sherman cupolas, may have been a later addition, so I'll use the Dragon cupola for the M48, after taking the big bump off the hatch, more Aves putty to fill the hole is drying now, pics to come.

Fenders, sheet metal in, brackets in progress. The big flat stuff was formerly a "For Sale" sign, great plastic, cheap and I feel like I'm recycling.... IMG_9776 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_9775 by Russel Baer, on Flickr And a pic of the T/C's hatch cover, painted to check for flaws, next to the unmodified part. I can see the need for further sanding before I add the two periscopes at the back. IMG_9774 by Russel Baer, on Flickr

Hull is nearing completion, a few small and easy details left with the exception of finding out what is normally stowed with the track tools on the right fender, and then it's on to the turret. IMG_0142 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_0143 by Russel Baer, on Flickr

Quality modeling time today! The turret basket is done, using what few Draagon parts I had, wire, scrap brass and a couple of Tamiya bits sanded down to near scale thickness. IMG_0144 by Russel Baer, on Flickr And Oh happy day, the hull is done and primered: IMG_0145 by Russel Baer, on Flickr Once the paint cures, I can look for booboos.

Keep it up Russ! The IDF is going to draft you into the repair/rebuilding corps! You should start putting serial numbers on these to keep track of them. lol Great progress as always Russ. I always enjoy watching these builds of yours come together.

Lol! I had an idea the other day, to use the same serial number on this build and the Magach 3 I plan on doing next, to represent the same tank before and after the update from Magach 2 to -3. Goofy? I dunno. Anyway, I have been modeling, and will get pics up soon, I think. I share this laptop with my wife, who is now working from home, so my time on it is understandably limited, but on the good side, I'm on a reduced schedule, and I "have" to leave her alone to work, so I retreat to the model room. Bummer, right?

There are worse things that can happen to you! Last year my wife broke her shoulder while she was chaperoning our granddaughters girl scout troop at a water park. the three months she was out of work was rough, she would see something that needed to be done and would say; "We need to fix this" Which translated means, "You need to fix this, while I supervise and tell you how to do it!"

And it better be done in a timely manner too.

The "timely manner" wasn't the problem, my Wife bless her heart, is the second most non-mechanical person I know. I know some of Y'all know the three ways of completing a job, the right way, the wrong way, and the military way, which takes a NCO and a 6 man working party to complete; my Wife has added a fourth way, her method takes three times as long as the right way, twice the amount of material, and is three times a difficult. We will be married 25 years this July, and I honestly do not know I would survive without her!
