...but it's a good way to use up partial kits. It's the hull of the AUF 1 left over from Slammer 2 and a Tamiya Leo 1 turret that's out of a kit that's been buried in the closet for a hundred years or so. I thought the two would combine nicely, so it was off to the races. Bits are from Hobby Boss, Academy and whatever else I can dig up. So far it's got kind of a Swiss/Swedish look, but I may paint it in purely sci-fi colors, no idea yet. IMG_3771 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3772 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3770 by Russel Baer, on Flickr The Meng AMX hull was kind of weird: some parts looked like old Matchbox/Revell kits from the '70s and the rest is insanely detailed, lots of tiny parts.

Lol! My last "real" job was building off-road vehicles, mostly from Jeeps but lots of Toyota too, and I used parts from everybody, adapting as necessary. I guess I do the same thing in 1/35 scale.

Today I did some work on the turret, trying to make it as "busy" as the hull. IMG_3777 - Copy by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3776 - Copy by Russel Baer, on Flickr I just added a searchlight/range finder/death ray thingie and did a mantlet cover, and I'm thinking about adding a 50-cal on the mantlet center, just 'cus.

Thanks! Good ol' Aves putty. I'm trying to decide on adding a mantlet-mounted 50 cal and a couple of can holders on the rear turret basket.

Cool armor build----what a mean it's not real? — Of Course it’s real. I can see the photos right here on me screen. You guys are just pullin’ my lanyard, can’t fool me. Seriously: very impressive and business like looking “bit of kit” as the Brits say.

Well, I had to do something different for paint, so I looked at what I had handy. Vallejo "dead flesh" in a rattle can sounded neat, so that's the base coat, then leather brown and a custom shade of pea green. I'm pondering adding a third color. IMG_3788 by Russel Baer, on Flickr

Now this.....is very interesting. I've never even heard of "dead flesh" as a color.

It'll be interesting to see what the back story is. This paint job is turning out to be quite good with this scheme.

Well, that may be one Funky Monkey, but the weathering and details look great from here. I do like the French touch, it's fitting, HA!

Howdy Leon! T'anks, just using up parts.... Finished pics: IMG_3798 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3799 - Copy by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3800 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3809 - Copy - Copy by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3810 - Copy - Copy by Russel Baer, on Flickr Horn tooting disclaimer: At a really neat get-together in College Station put on by the Texas Independent Military Modelers called "Winterblitz", this one got a first in the "Paper Panzer" class, Slammer 3 got a second. I'm validated, woo hoo! BTW, Winterblitz is held at the Museum of the American GI in College Station, a very very cool place. I HIGHLY recommend a visit. They have two Shermans, amongst other goodies, and I'm pretty sure they're runners. Also spotted in the back lot was an M47 in primer, lacking fenders. I admit to some involuntary drooling.

The story, and I'm stickin' to it: Due to the near complete failure of the new AMX 30's gunnery controls and the poor performance of its gun, and in order to meet the needs of the French forces in Indochina (!) the turret from the proven Leopard 1 was hastily mated to the fairly reliable AMX 30 hull and the vehicles hurriedly shipped off to Southeast Asia where they performed "adequately". That's basically what I wrote on the entry sheet.

il est magnifique! and you did what the original 1956 Franco-German-Italian cooperative development program was aiming for, but failed to achieve. ( ref:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMX-30 ) So you is a genuine armor guru

I guess that comes from doing so much research in the "quest" to build accurate models: I have too many goofy ideas floating around.

Follow up: Every time I look at this thing in the case I either giggle or at least get a half-smile. It was the most fun I've had in a long time, and I can easily recommend doing something like this to energize yourself if you're possibly sliding towards a case of modeling burnout. It's been to three shows and gets an inordinate amount of attention when on the table. Yes, I had fun doing it, and yes, I'm going to do something along the same line again, soon. Between this and the Slammer 3 I've seen more people scratching their heads and probably thinking "what on God's green earth is that?" than I have in a long time.
