Most but not necessarily all model t engines were black. I gotta do a bit more research before I decide to paint over it or not. I like your idea of a black base.

Made me curious so I went down a rabbit hole. There are a pile of people that say they weren't painted at all, some say grey, some say green, and some say black. Pictures are almost useless as they are all restored engines using whatever preference the restorer had. The most intelligent sounding one was this though: www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/118802/149691.html?1278536275So a dirty (even brand new) dead flat black for everything that is a part of the block and a semi gloss for bolted on accessories sounds about right.
