This is a build i did last year before i joined here and i have been asked by the mods to post it here The subject is the 50 year old Airfix Bentley 1/12 I built this as a kid ( a couple of times but TBH it was never any good) with its chrome parts with chrome destroying attachment points and its basic detail ( good for the 70's) I decieded to give it one more go as it had always defeated me in the past
Bear with me as this is not a current build in progres, its a recreation of the original build and i may not have all the pictures.

Things like the magnito's and other ancilleries are all pretty straight forward but also basic sothe level of detail you add is your choice

Like a lot of the parts this water pipe was chrome plated but the detail was very soft I striped the chrome and decieded it was not going to be what i wanted it to be so fabricated another with some brass and copper tube from Albion Alloys.
Some carefull soldering Albion alloys tubes in brass/copper/alloy are really good and all the sizesm fit neatly in each other like a tellescope.
And here it is attached with a brass tube bellow for the plug wires I appreciate there are chunks of this build missing as i go along but if anyone has any questions feel free. Magnitos now fitted

So this is the kit fuel tank, detail is pretty good but while they have moulded a wire mesh stone gard in the plastic its going to be a nightmare to paint so i decieded to sand the whole lot off and start again. You can just see a litttle of the mesh in this sanded picture
I then added some brass mesh and created a lip round the end of the tank with some plastic strip so the mesh would be flush on the sides and back
The retaining straps are coke can, excelent for thin gauge alloy
And re added the fuel pipes using brass tube Every one of these bentleys was diferent. Bently only made the rolling chassis, engine and hood. The body work was added by coach builders to the owners spec later so you have a pretty free scope with the fuel tank

This is the engine bulk head
I sanded off the moulded in bolts and removed some of the detail and added an alloy strip like this
Then using the bulkhead as a template i cut some Alloy sheet to make an alloy frame for front and back to create a sandwich
Front
And back

I am almost ashamed to say i have bottled out of the wheels Model making should be fun and frankly the thought of lacing up 5 wheels is not my idea of fun. In fairness i do speak with some experience having done a few motorcycle wheels These were some motorcycle wheels i lasced up using piano wire for Italeri's Triumph 350 despatch bike 1:9
These are 3D printed Bentley wheels for the Airfix Bentley made by a company in Ireland. Crucially the spokes on these are realistically thick unlike the kit wheels. Cost was slightly more that the whole kit from Airfix but i will gloss over this quickly Separating them from their construction frames will be fun as will painting them so the tire doesn't look like part of the rim ... The biggest challenge will be mounting them as the maker has gone for an accurate copy of the original rather than making them to fit the kit parts......
You have to cut the hubs out of the original kit wheels and fit them to the 3D printed wheels. note the kit thick spokes which is why i went for 3D printed

Having laced up a wheel or two of my own, I wholeheartedly agree that purchasing is the route to take. I’ll spend the money every time if I can find something aftermarket. Just incredible work has clearly gone into this. And I can’t wait to see the future (past?) installments. Thanks for sharing!!

Ok sop where are we ? well a Bentley Bower needs a blower The super charger sits on the front of the engine and again is nicely moulded if a bit basic with a couple of SU type carbs on the side this is the main pipe from the Blower to the inlet manifold
I replace one plastick part with a brass rod but the rest is just paint
This is the assembled blower. All i have done here is add a throttle spindle and spring between the carbs and made some airfilters with a couple of washers and some fine mesh

This the blower mounted on the front of the engine and showing the blower pipe above
notice there is now a brass rod running through the engine to each manifold, this is added and is the advance /retard for the magnitos
And this where we are at now, Chassis /engine and fuel tank

Once again seats are basic but its important to say even if you didnt alter anything this would still build up in to a nice model
the stock seats have a strange edge
so i added some beading, just round 1mm plastic rod
Painted them again
And added some flock to the backs to simulate carpet.

Well, as is becoming the norm since I joined this forum, I am nearly speechless. The attention to detail, and quality of work here boggles my mind. I'd display your completed chassis as a model on its own. Never mind the rest of the car. This is all just gorgeous work.

On the home run now. Mock up the hood before you fix the radiator so you can get the gap to the body correct
like this
Fenders painted and ready for fitting. leave these till last because they are fragile, at least the mountings are.

If you are a fan of vintage race cars and like this large 1/12 scale check out the relatively new Italeri range I say new but Italeri bought the moulds from Protar back in the 70’s. The models are a bit suspect because the design was for metal parts and now, they have been reproduced in plastic, some, especially around the steering mechanism, are too weak for the job. A lot of the parts screw together and again this doesn’t transpose to plastic very well. One other important point is don’t use spirit-based washes as they attack the plastic Italeri have used. The plus side is they are great for detailing up. I have built three in the last few years.

Yeah, these are fantastic. Brilliant. You have a great knack for adding the detail where it's needed and pulling it off in quite convincing fashion. Great subjects too! I too look "forward" to your coming works.
