Cool ship. Built as an Ice Breaker in 1937 for Russia by Japan, seized by Japan in 1938. Converted to ammo ship in 1940 and survived a torpedo attack ,an attack by US destroyer and the Truk raid , converted to repatriation transport in 1946, an Antarctic Survey ship in 1956, retired in the 1970's and now it is a Museum ship. It should be colorful as the first version of the Antarctic explorer ship. Tiny for me at less than 242 scale feet. On the shelf since 2006. I have a ship to weather for a fellow old man first though.

Sign me up to watch this one come along. That's a good looking ship. And unusually bright in her Antarctic livery. Very cool. Nice history lesson too.

Love the back story on this one Paul. Sounds like this ship had quite the journey both in ownership and different usages which makes it even more of an interesting subject to build. I'll be watching for updates on this one after you get finished with that weathering project on that BB34 New York.
This thread is now bookmarked.

I'll break the ice with a few pics. The color scheme is easiest with some assembly and painting from the top down, than all the deck details. Here it is with minor assembly and the first coats of white base on. I may try to convert an other to the 1938 version, but ut us pretty much everything above the main deck! If you think that would be a task, contemplate the preserved Russian Icebreaker/Arctic Science Vessel Krassin with his 1960 East German superstructure on his 1916 Tyneside-built hull... Built as the Svyatogor for the Imperial Russian Navy, taken over by the Bolsheviks who scuttled him as a blockship at Arkhangelsk, salvaged by the Royal Navy who used him at Devonport and Scapa Flow (sometimes as a minesweeper), returned to the Soviets in 1921 and renamed after the diplomat who arranged the return in 1927, rescued General Umberto Nobile from the Arctic ice after he crashed his airship in 1928, and in 1941 crossed the Pacific to Bremerton as a plan by the U.S. to hire him for use by the USCG. When the deal fell through he transited the Panama Canal to the U.K. where he was given four Three-inch guns and some light AA, proceeded to Iceland where convoy PQ-15 was assembling and formed part of the escort to Murmansk. Heavily rebuilt by East Germany as part of their Reparations programme and continuing icebreaking duties until 1971, then as a scientific research vessel for nearly two decades and thereafter to repatriate junk Ladas from Europe, narrowly avoided being sent for scrapping in the U.S. in 2016 but now restored to full working order as a museum ship at St Petersburg. Cheers,
M

You do realise the part of the description on 41Chevy's box top that says "1st Corps" is a mistranslation of "Version 1"? The big 1:250th illustrated above is "Version 2" (modified, forward gunwales raised), the 1:350th "Version 1" and "Version 2" are also available as a "Super Detail" kits as are both the 1/250th and 1/350th "Version 3" (as preserved, enlarged flight deck and Sikorsky H-34 "Choctaw" helicopter)... They're from Pokemon land, "Gotta collect them all" Cheers, M

I just thought it looked cool, and your comment about the "metric ****load of PE" had me intrigued!

The hulls painted up and some super structure assemble. Also basic deck weathering from Ice and Snow I missed this last update Paul. All these years I knew you built ships but man......this is some good stuff!! Glad you're here brother!

A bit more done. I had to pick up another Soya Super kit after finding the PE set and wood deck I bought with the original kit in 2004 is for the later kit with the raised heli deck. Guess it's kind of late to exchange them The spare kit I'll convert to the IJN 1939 cargo version. Hosted on FotkiHosted on Fotki

Superb progress Paul. You are doing some really choice work on this unique build. It really is a cool ship your building and I am enjoying learning so much here.
