I saw Gojira Minus One last night. It has shattered my belief that there will never be a good SFX movie made in Japan. Don’t get me wrong, Japan makes some great movies, just not any live action SF/kaiju flicks. I thought Shin Gojira was just too weird. Later on I learned that the creator of Evangelion was behind it so that explained a lot of things.
But Gojira Minus One is different. Anyone who watches Japanese SFX movies will notice the difference in scripting, casting, acting, and pacing. And the sets and effects are terrific. I almost felt dirty as my eyes fondled the full-scale prop of the Shinden. And the drama of the people caught up in the action is relatable. I actually cared about what would happen to the various characters.
And did anyone notice that they did the lines from Blue Oyster Cult’s song “Godzilla” when the Big G was coming ashore heading towards the Ginza district? That’s the other thing I liked about the movie - they paid homage to all things Gojira without it being shoved into your face. Hollywood should take note.
Anyway, I am glad that I saw a good movie to close out the year. If you haven’t seen Gojira Minus One, go now!

I'm waiting for it to get to streaming or bluray. I hate theaters.
Shin is a very weird movie. I didn't watch it until recently because of the evangelion creator. All the weird things rumored about his involvement in it and the delay it caused to the rebuild series, I was pretty much over it before it came out.

"By Dawn's Early Light", an old HBO movie from 1990 about a B-52 crew when WW3 starts.

Was the band Gojira in it?

All the weird things rumored about his involvement in it and the delay it caused to the rebuild series, I was pretty much over it before it came out. Personally I don’t like the big soft recliner chairs the theaters are putting in. I feel like a 5-year old sinking into grandma’s sofa. The reclined position is uncomfortable, and I end up staring at the ceiling. On the other end of the spectrum there were the little seats in the Osaka theater that lacked any padding and were just inches off the ground. I felt like we were sitting on the ground while we watched Princess Mononoke. Shin Gojira was just a collection of bizarre kaiju scenes with a government procedural show thrown in. The legless form of Gojira had those fake 1970s bug-eyes that were no doubt intentional, but it was just another stupid attempt at a homage to earlier kaiju films. This is the thing that bothers me most about remakes of Japanese SFX movies. They lovingly cling to all the lousy stuff that the original film makers had to do because the tech or money, or both, simply did not exist. The little human forms seen growing out of the tip of Gojira’s tail at the end of Shin Gojira betrayed the Evangelion creator’s hand. But if Evangelion units popped up and dispatched the Big G with their pallet rifles, or any of the other weapons that made more of a mess, that would have made Shin Gojira a heck better!

The last movie I saw in a theater was Grease so I have NEVER sat in the big soft recliners.

I hate theaters because I'm 6'5" and never fit in any of the seats.

Nope, not me. When I do go to the theater I either sit in the back or hunch down to not block the people behind me.

I'm watching Reacher on Amazon. I hear he is 6'5" too but then he's on the other side of the screen...
