Interior coming together. Trying to break up all that black where I reasonably can. Didn't bother stripping the door panel off the passenger side as it is mostly hidden anyway.

  Pretty creative work on that door shell Tony and love the detailing on it as well. I think it's pretty cool the lengths that we'll take as modeler's to at least get a build close to the references and you've done a fine job of that.

I have a question dodgy or any of our down under folks. Just how much underbody/suspension rust could you expect for a roughly 5 year old, desert driven but poorly maintained car?  There would be no floor left at all if it was here but I can't find any good references for there. 

Not down under, but having spent time in US deserts I'm going to guess not much. Maybe a bit of flash surface rust if anything, but a grungy brownish wash of indistinct dirt, grime, dust and a pinch of rust would probably do it. I'm not sure that it would be fair to call the interceptor poorly maintained. Max is seen working on his yellow interceptor at the start of Mad Max, and the black interceptor before he heads out from the refinery in The Road Warrior. Not ideal conditions but he would probably do his best to keep up on oil and lube at the very least.


Here is an example of rust for you from Arizona. This truck had been sitting out in the elements for probably 10+ years. Rust just isn't a huge problem when the humidity rarely exceeds 30% and the annual rainfall in inches is single digits.

Thanks. That was pretty much what I thought.
When I said "maintained" I meant the body and other non mechanical parts. Road Warrior is 5 years after the first movie and the car is pretty beat and VERY grungy. That supercharger would be a brute to maintain during the best of ties so doing it under post apocalyptic conditions would be a full time job. 
The hardest part to see what it looked like is that it is usually seen in brief glimpses during chases.

Stone chips and gravel rash would be the immediate thing you'd notice. Wide tyres on loose surfaces with a car driven this hard. There would be oxidisation around the chips but the continual sand blasting effect keeps discolouration down. Sills and wheel arches take the brunt of it.

Found a good screenshot.




First layer of dirt on interior and chassis. Looks more intense in the pictures than it actually is. Golden Brown craft acrylic and My Hobby tan pigments. This will get toned down a bit in the next step but the colour is very close to the picture.

Sorry tcoat, I missed this. I have posted a couple of photos, hope they help. Heavy rust is not a problem out there as the humidity is so low, almost to be non existent. However, the stones can do a lot of damage. They're hell on tyres, and have been known to crack diff and trans housings.

Thanks! In the long run I decided that it will be dirty enough in the areas where there would be rust, chipping and wear that you wouldn't see it anyway so went with just various different Aussie dirt tones. You guys have some interesting soil colours. At least from my Canadian almost all dark brown perspective.

Unfortunately I don't have access to the movie right now (my copy is at the cottage) so had to rely on what I could pull up on YouTube. Most of the pictures on the net are either models or the restored museum car so not much help. I am using a couple of the aspects from the museu car such as the grid on the headlight covers and the MFP logos on the front fenders even though I don't think they wee there on the Road Warrior version just because I like them.

From looking at the instructions the updated version of the kit is all interior (which really needed an update) but the rest of the kit is identical.

Nope. No noif, packs, shotgun or any of that stuff. Just a bucket and can of dog food. I had to make all the rest. Still working out the shotgun

You can see the booby trap a couple of times in the movie.

Here are a couple of screen shots. The booby trap is on the left rear (drivers side in USA) between the body side and rear spring pack. 

This is from the scene where Max disarms the bomb when he meets the Gyro Captain. You get a decent shot of the knife he has stashed there as well. 




This is from the bomb being activated when the bad guys are trying to get gas from the wrecked car.

Two things: First....you've done an amazing job on bringing this iconic car to life Tony. This is like....one of my all time favorite autos and makes me want to bust out with mine already. 

Secondly, I know you're going to install those pipes but to be honest, I never liked them on the car as I thought they just looked out of place. I know you'll put 'em on there because as far as the movie themed car, they belong there.

I agree that it does sort of look better but you are correct that have to go on. They will be dirty enough that they won't jump out at you though.
