Annnnnnd... My Airfix 1:24 Spitfire Mk I is ready. It was quite a challenge but I managed to get it ready in time. You all read about my mishaps with the engine in the build thread ( Airfix 1:24 Spitfire Mk IXc Build Thread) . After correcting it I went ahead and nearly completed it. Then I lost both navigation lights! Airfix was so kind to send me new ones. To add insult to injury, the pitot tube decided to go on a permanent holiday! I had to recreate one, as it kept nagging me that it was missing. The kit was enhanced by Quinta set for the cockpit and radio. Since it is a pity to hide the radio I detailed and opened the radio hatch. Instead of the decals for the exterior I used 1manarmy masks. This is no easy task but looks good... Here are the results...

Erwin
Firstly apologies, I completely missed you joining! January did not see much forum time.
Secondly, very well done indeed that's turned out very nicely indeed. I have enough trouble doing things buttoned up and so so do it exposed the way you have done gives me nightmares, but at this scale, I completely get it.
Again very well done indeed.

Hi Andrew, That is no problem. I know it is hard to keep track of everything. I prefer to build planes in a larger scale, and when possible (if the details are included) I like to open up as much as possible to show all those beautiful details.

Not only is that one big beastie of a model but it's also a well built one. Superb detailing and paint/ weathering work goin' on here. I hear what you're saying about the desire to open up additional panels to show off more .....especially in this scale. Very well done Erwin.

Thanks a lot Joe! I still have a 1/24 Mossie in the stash, and, even worse: a 1:32 Border Lancaster. 1m span! Now that is a big plane! I have no place yet to put these behemoths, only when one of the kids will leave the nest, will there be space to put those! Since my eldest will be 17 next month, that won't be the case for some years to come.

These large planes in the larger scales have been a thing now for the last few years and like you........I have no place to put one. lol Our son is turning 20 next week so he's a little closer to the move out ordeal but even then I'll have a hard time figuring out where to put these larger scale upcoming builds I'm looking at. I can't imagine how big that Lanc would be....Jeez!!

This looks excellent. You overcame issues with a wonderful finish to this. I really like the way you opened this up to see the detail!

Erwin, nice job on the Spitfire. It surely does pay to use masks instead of decals, especially in the larger scales. The cockpit looks like the real thing. I noticed some "hair" on the close up of the battery. One thing I have learned the hard way on pictures with that much enlargement is that it works good to take a test picture, and then you can see what needs to be cleaned up, and there always is, it is just not possible to see that kind of detail with the naked eye. Then take the finish photo.

Nice job - and that is one big finished model! John, I cringe when I look at pics of some of my models. It's an excellent and humbling tool.

Yes I see it too (apart from the dust), and a big ugly thumb print on the same picture :-( I have to see what I can do about it without destroying the paint job...

The big scale shows off the details so well. Really enjoyed following this one. And you have a wonderful result here. Excellent work.

Erwin somehow I missed this. Wow beautiful finish. The painted markings do make a real difference
I wouldn't know where to put something like this. I have a big display cabinet and I don't think thus would fit.

Many thanks TJ! I have a shelf that houses 3 1:24 Airfix airplanes. Unfortunately it is not covered, so a regular dusting is warranted....

You can say that! I use a make up brush that is used to apply blush (I think) :and therefore has very soft bristles.

Many thanks for your kind words. It is a nice kit but not an easy one. Be very careful with the engine and the wheel covers.

Lovely, lovely work on this old stalwart kit, this is one of the first kits I ever built (gluebombed) as a kid in the 70's. All your perseverance has paid off, and you've built a stunning model. I like the open radio hatch, that adds a lot to it, and the cockpit is very realistic too. Your semi-grubby weathering is spot on, especially the panel line washes. Great work Erwin.
